Mechelen Mania

Deze Tumblr is gewijd aan de mooiste stad van België (volgens mij dan toch ;) ) De thema's die behandeld worden, zijn zeer divers. Er valt namelijk heel veel te zeggen over Mechelen.

Hof van Busleyden

Hiëronymus van Busleyden, lid van de Grote Raad, een humanist en goede vriend van Erasmus, liet in de 16de eeuw deze prachtige paleiswoning ontwerpen door de bekende architect Keldermans. Het gebouw is volledig opgetrokken in renaissancestijl.

Van 1619 tot de Eerste Wereldoorlog doet het gebouw dienst als Berg van Barmhartigheid: armen kunnen er geld lenen zonder rente. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog wordt het gebouw volledig vernield, alleen de muren staan nog recht. Het wordt later heropgebouwd en krijgt in 1938 de functie van stadsmuseum. 

Van de oorspronkelijke aankleding van het Hof van Busleyden is weinig bewaard. Het enige wat hiervan nog rest zijn enkele iconografische bronnen en de fragmentarische muurschilderingen in het hypocaustum, een kleine rechthoekige woonkamer in de zuidelijke vleugel van het gebouw.

Traditiegetrouw werd op de tweede zondag van september het klokkenwerpen georganiseerd. Vanuit de Sint-Romboutstoren vlogen grote klokken over de Grote Markt met een lading kleine rode plastieken klokjes. Wie een van de twintig van de 400 klokjes voorzien van een nummer te pakken kreeg, kreeg een echt bronzen exemplaar. (bron: https://www.facebook.com/MechelenRedactie)

Op 4 september 1944 werd Mechelen bevrijd door de Amerikanen. Dit jaar was het dus 70 jaar geleden dat ook het laatste transport van de Dossin kazerne naar Auschwitz werd gestopt.

Mechelen Muurt

Sinds juli van dit jaar werkt de stadsartiest Gijs Vanhee aan het project Mechelen Muurt. Hij nodigt verschillende artiesten uit die blinde muren in de Mechelse binnenstad beschilderen of bewerken met graffiti.

Lovely view of the Dijle

Dijle is the river that flows through the city of Mechelen. You have many opportunities to spot it and make some amazing shots. You can even walk on it (ok, you use a wooden sidewalk that you can see on the right of the picture, but nonetheless it is on the water ;-) )

Beachvolley 2014 on the Grote Markt (link album)

From 24th till 27th July the 17th edition of a beachvolley tournament is held on the Grote Markt. The tournament is open for companies and individuals. This year there are 750 contestants.

In front of the city hall you can see a bronze statue of Opsinjoorke I talked about yesterday. The statue is very photogenic, which proves the picture below :)

The guy you see flying in the air is Opsinjoorke. It is a wooden doll, the first of it was made in 1647. It is carried in ceremonial and religious processions and thrown into the air by means of a large linen cloth. It was originally called Sotscop or Foul Bridegroom, a reference to inebriated husbands who maltreated their wives. Divorce was absolutely forbidden in those days, and so the doll was symbolically punished (thrown into the air) for the sins of these men.

The doll acquired its current name on July 4th 1775 when, during a religious procession, the doll went beyond the reach of the cloth and landed among the crowd. An onlooker from Antwerp put out his arms to ward off the doll, but was accused of trying to steal the Sotscop. After receiving a sound thrashing from the patriotic people of Mechelen, he sent a letter of protest to the Mechelen magistrate pleading his innocence. From then on Sotscop became known as Opsinjoorke, 'sinjoor' being the nickname of the people of Antwerp! ((text from tourist office of Mechelen)

't Groen waterke

There are many idyllic spots in Mechelen and Groen Waterke is one of them. The brook owes its name to the duckweed which covers the surface of the water. It is in fact the remains of the Melaan brook which was not covered over or filled in here.
