A lack of accessibility is not just an ‘inconvenience’.
We need more books/shows/movies about characters in wheelchairs who are constantly put into situations where the world isn’t accessible. Like a character’s transported into a fantasy world but they’re in a castle in the medieval ages where there’s nothing but stairs, stairs, and more stairs! Or a character is a superhero and they received a call saying that somebody needs help on the third floor of a building but the owner never fixed that elevator so it sucks to be them. Or a character in a sci-fi story who’s just like, “OH COME ON!” because it turns out that someone illegally parked their spaceship in the handicap spot.
I mean we need more characters in wheelchairs anyway. That goes without saying. But I like the idea of the protagonist constantly finding themselves in these situations and being really sarcastic/cynical about it. It would be exaggerated but also very relatable and could end up raising some serious awareness for real-life situations.

people who use wheelchairs aren’t necessarily paralyzed. people use wheelchairs for a variety of reasons- heart problems, breathing problems, chronic pain, MS, muscle weakness, bad motor skills, broken bones, and a variety of invisible illnesses.
don’t question a person’s disability. they know it better than you, and they are using it for a reason. if they get out of the wheelchair it doesn’t mean they are ‘faking’. just because you can’t see their reason for using the wheelchair doesn’t mean it’s not valid.
don’t assume. being in a wheelchair is not fun or pleasant. don’t clump every wheelchair user’s reasons for using a wheelchair together. don’t assume what their illness is and treat them according to what you think it is.
ways to treat people who are in a wheelchair
good
if you see them struggling with accessibility, ask if you can help. don’t be pushy, if we say no leave us alone.
you can still maintain eye contact with somebody in a wheelchair without bending down to the wheelchair’s level
just treat them as you would somebody not in a wheelchair

talking slowly and like you would to a child
generally speaking, don’t ask what their disability is
getting angry at them for taking advantage of wheelchair accessibility
don’t tell them that they are an inspiration to you and are troopers-
treating them any less than you would somebody that is able-bodied
I don’t know if one ever truly “accepts” having a disability/chronic illness. sure, you get to a point where you’re aware of how and why said illness effects your life, and you live with it. you learn to deal. but the REALLY shitty thing no one talks about is the different facets of disability or illness you have to accept as life goes on. with each new sturdier mobility aid, each new symptom, a familiar wave of grief and anger hits me again and I have to learn to accept each new bit as I had once accepted my disability. so don’t tell me to “just accept it” or “move on” because life with disability &/ chronic illness is ever-changing, multi-faceted and unpredictable. just when you think, “hey, I can handle this! I got this!” the disability and illnesses throw something new at you, so you can never really quite catch your breath.
