A play does not exist until it’s on stage

With our hearts on fire We lit up the night, left our fears behind Running for our lives, like we never die

The Stage
William Shakespeare once wrote, “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.” But just like all stage plays, there is a whole different world behind the curtain. Last year, my family and I went abroad on vacation. It had always been my dream to go to the United Kingdom. Most specifically, I always yearned to go to London. During my week there, I discovered a love for something new: stage plays.
One of the causes of my passion for theater was the opportunity to watch plays in the West End and Her Majesty’s Theater. My family had gotten tickets to watch two famous plays which were currently being shown in the theaters. The first play we went to was the ever famous “Phantom of The Opera” in Her Majesty’s Theater.
There, I got to experience the magic that was being shown on stage, live, and right in front of me. When the play started, the lights turned off, the orchestra started playing, and the actors finally come out on stage. As I watched, I look at all the little details of the stage production. I saw how the stage moved as one particular scene occurred. I saw how the timing of the music was perfect to the actions, the aura of the scene as the lights changed. It was grand. Having the theater specifically made for this single play was phenomenal. A small spark of infatuation ignited inside of me.
The next play we went to was “Les Miserables” in the West End.
Just like the first play, I watched at every little detail: the way the actors moved, sang with all of their emotions, and how elaborate the costumes were. This was much simpler than the first play, but it still had me sat on the edge of my seat. I had the same feeling, excitement, curiosity, and passion. When it ended, I knew I had learned a lot.
It just so happened that the next school year was a fun one. In December, it was announced that we were going to have a stage play for English Month. I was ecstatic, and a little nervous. I wanted us to win, to have fun, and skip some classes. My best friend and I volunteered to be directors. We knew what to. We knew that this was the last year we would be together as a class. As soon as we got our parts, we started to make the script. That’s when it all happened. I was hands-on. I timed the music, thought of props, and ideas were flooding through my head for weeks.
Finally, weeks of practice, sweat, tears, finally paid off. We ended up winning best play, and almost all of the other awards. I was proud of us. The main actors, supporting roles, and even the simple merchants in the background.
I was thankful to everyone who made an effort to make the vision my friend and I had for the play. Thus, my knowledge on stage plays helped us win the last competition of the school year 2016-2017. All the world’s a stage.
Disconnect
Travelling is seeing the world, experiencing different cultures, and learning to appreciate them.
Summer just started and I was more than excited to go to Iceland with my family.
The plane started its descent and my eyebrows raised as I asked my kuya, “Tama ba ‘to?” The foreign sight of barren lands shocked me. We left the plane and made our way to immigration and met with my brother.
I was on my phone at the time, probably on social media. As we drive to the city of Reykjavik, my dad tells me to let go of my phone and appreciate the surroundings. At first, I was reluctant. I knew I would not see anything but barren land. Nonetheless, I followed and placed my phone in my bag.
It was the most magical experience. On the way to Stykkishólmur, we pass by a beach. It was not the usual beach.
There was no sand. Instead, there were lava rocks. Plus, the intense cold made it feel weird.
Wearing my fluffy pink hat, I stood by the shore and watched as my Kuya tried his best not to get wet by the waves. I looked down at the pink balls attached to my hat and saw the perfect little snowflake.
It was small, yet it looked as if it was perfectly sculpted by an artist. It was beautiful.
That was the moment. That was when a light feeling in my chest suddenly appeared. I thought of how nature was indeed, very beautiful. I had my phone, but it was like time stopped for me. All that mattered was that itty-bitty snowflake that sat so lightly on my hat.
After that, I thought to myself. These little things that nature does are given no value.
I think that it is time to appreciate nature. It can never be paralleled.
Desolation
It’s here; dry and empty
An oasis of bliss stands to tempt me
Like a mirage, you’re here; blinding
Loneliness, why me?
You were always keeping your distance
Why visit me this Christmas?
I have no choice but to listen
I am a fool; you’re persistent
Leave me, never come back
Pitch black
My heart engulfed in your attack
Leave me, I’m falling off track
Like an owl in the middle of the night
I soar alone in the moonlight
My world of color turned black and white
The sun is almost gone; twilight
I’ve fallen, not for a man
But in an abyss with an outstretched hand
You are the friend I never had
Maybe I lost my chance
Loneliness, you were correct
Past tense
My heart I will protect
This is my self-defense

London calls me a stranger A traveler This is now my home, my home I’m burning on the back street Stuck here sitting in the backseat I’m blazing on the street What I do isn’t up to you And if the city never sleeps Then that makes two
