BLADE RUNNER (1982) FRANKENSTEIN (2025)

I haven't seen Frankenstein (although I've heard positive things) but I'm gonna take this opportunity to talk about the glowing eye SFX in Blade Runner, one of my fave practical effects ever!

In Frankenstein, Elordi's yellowish-red eye glow was achieved with the use of a brown contact lens and post-production digital effects. The replicant eye glow in Blade Runner is entirely practical, created in camera & taking advantage of the same physical properties of the eye that causes a red glowing effect in flash photography.

The cornea, lens, and retina of the human eye contain layers which reflect a significant portion of incoming light. (As a side note, the colorful glow characteristic of flash-photographed animal eyes is caused by a different structure, the tapetum lucidum, which lies behind their retinas.)

To achieve the glowing effect, you must have a light shining into the eye from nearly exactly the position of the camera. They did this in Blade Runner using a two-way mirror—a mirror that is reflective on one side and transparent on the other. The mirror is placed in front of the camera lens and angled at 45°; then, a flashlight is placed at a right angle so that its beam hits the reflective side of the mirror and bounces in exactly the same direction as the lens.

So, the image is being captured from exactly the same place as the light source. The same technique was used in the 1978 Superman movie on the Kryptonians' glowing costumes:
