We've moved! Thank you. Management.

I'm already lucky enough to be able to play music for a living, most often as a solo acoustic singer-songwriter, performing at weddings, wineries, and private events. Performing live in those settings feels very different than playing in Mr. Kind. I'm still amazed at every turn the opportunities we've gotten in the short time that we've been a band.
Last night was our first visit to San Francisco's Cafe Du Nord. It was a special occasion to us because Jon Devoto was playing guitar on stage with us for the first time in eight months since battling an incurable nerve disease known as RSD. What made it even more special was the support we received from the friends and fans that continue to see us as we grow as a band, and members from local groups who came -- shout-outs to Tektite, Rin Tin Tiger, Finish Ticket, Bears, Bears, Bears, and Moxie Kids for representing at our show...and I know I'm probably forgetting some people.
The venue was great, life was as it should be with Jon behind an axe, and we had friends, fans, and local musical royalty there. The final ingredient was rad music from the other acts on the bill. This was our first time playing with Choirs, a supremely awesome group of dudes from the east bay. Luckily, we'll be sharing the stage again with them at Red House in Walnut Creek on February 21st. The headliners of the evening, Hey Ocean!, were on tour from Canada yet they have a devoted fan base, and justifiably so. They were a tight and skilled live band as well as humble and warm folks to talk to backstage.
I'm terrible at taking pictures to document things...especially at shows, but Emily Kiyomi was there shooting so we'll have photos soon enough. Danitza ran merch for us but we look forward to working with her in a greater capacity in the future as she is a great artist in her own right.
Oh man, this blog is starting to resemble an Oscar acceptance speech. I'd like to thank God, my manager (me), and my mother. More of us to come.
Thank you! Thank you! (Picture below by Ricky Rios from Bears, Bears, Bears)

Win Free Tickets for Tomorrow Night!
Last week, Jon and I visited FrequenScene to play some tunes, talk about Mr. Kind, and most importantly, chat cats. You can check out the whole video interview here.
They're also giving away a pair of FREE tickets to our Du Nord show tomorrow night by re-tweeting this message. Today's the last day!
Studio Transmission
Michael Chiang, engineer for both OK and the new tracks that we're working on in the studio, recently wrote a blog about our session last week. Now, those who know me know that I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to talking about the technical aspects of sound recording, music equipment, or anything really...but for those who geek out over that kind of stuff, you should definitely read Michael's entry. He talks about the mics that he used, his technique, as well as throwing up some raw samples of our new tracks.
Read his full entry here.
Jon was giving me a hard time via email about not posting about our exploits in the studio so I plan on doing some of my own reporting sometime soon. (Back off, Devoto). Stay tuned.

Finally, a video from our Wilco show
Back in November, we played a tribute show to Wilco, an extremely influential band for the members of Mr. Kind. For my part, is was one of the funnest shows I've ever been a part of, and I think we did a pretty good job honoring Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
It took us a while to go through the footage but we finally put together what we thought was the best track of the night. We hope to have another one coming your way in a couple of weeks, but for now, I'm the Man Who Loves You.
Maliced Hearts
At the close of 2012, I began working on material to present to the MR. KIND boys for a studio date we had booked at the end of January. I had just gone through a break-up (just in time for the holidays) and thought that I'd have plenty of ideas to sink my teeth into.
I kept being drawn, however, to the skeleton of a song that I had written well over a year ago but never finished. Whenever I started working on a new song, I was drawn back to my initial sketch, a song that preceded and wasn't even considered for OK.
I brought it to Jon, who helped co-produce OK, and over the course of a couple weeks, we picked away at the arrangement, while I constantly refined the lyrics. It's the wordiest song I've ever written, rooted in sentiments I've felt although the narrative itself is fictional. Once brought to the band, the song then really began to find its wings.
I recorded a rough acoustic demo to share this new song for y'all before we head into the studio on Sunday. I've been trying to move away from acoustic folk and less intuitive instrumentation so what you see/hear below is much different than the arrangement the band is kicking around. Still, it should give you a sense of where things are going with this one. Draft lyrics can be found below the video.
- Brian
Verse 1: I won't disturb you dear when I leave here in the morning I think it best that I not serve a warning, delay us from admitting just what we did My head aches as evidence from a night of heavy drinking Designed to interrupt, distort our thinking, distract from things once felt with our maliced hearts
Verse 2: The girl I knew back in school she had a different way to get you In subtlety she found herself a warm ruse enough to make you feel some more alive When I first became aware of the flash of early interest The trumpets blared loudly enough to deafen, and others seemed extras in a dream
Chorus 1: I don't know what was done to make you leave But now we've gone and fucked it up, completely, completely
Verse 3: When Jack left the party ran to fish his friend out of the river I stuck around long enough to find reason to stay as I caught you from afar and all others went dark The night moved, I found myself in a room had grown more crowded but still unseen by the one that had held my attention ‘Til the cops came to kick, kick, us out to the night
Bridge 1: The familiar feeling of the tightening of your grip, you're on my mind
Verse 4: Under cover of darkness I found you, free to forget our history, allowed to pretend that this was a first meeting, allow ourselves to indulge now put the past in its place And briefly the girl from back in school returned, the one I knew before the rules the one before the boredom, The girl who could put all at ease if just given the chance
Chorus 2: I don’t know what we said that made it bleed But now we’ve gone and fucked it up, completely I don't know what was done to make you leave But now we've gone and fucked it up, completely, completely
Bridge 2: The familiar feeling of the tightening of your grip, you're on my mind You throw me out of synch, would it be easier to just let it be? The familiar feeling of the tightening of your grip when you're in my mind
V5: Now where does this leave us, I don’t want to think myself too hasty Each minute I feel my feelings ever-changing I’ve worked too hard getting whole to just give it away And briefly I’m reminded of trumpets loud enough to deafen With a stillness found only with divine intervention It’s the thought that I take as I leave when I close the door
Mr. Kind at Cafe Du Nord
Things have been slow on the show front for Mr. Kind since the rad show we had at Brick & Mortar Music Hall earlier in the month (still glowing). We're heading into the studio this Sunday to begin recording our first new tracks since we released OK last July (more on that later in the week) and we've been hesitant about committing to new shows as we work on new material.
However, when Cafe Du Nord came knocking and asked us to open for Universal Recording Artist Hey Ocean!, we were thrilled. Opening the show that night is the band Choirs, who we will also be playing with later in February.
So, if you've been looking for something fun to do on a Tuesday night, look no further. We'll be debuting some of our new songs and partying mid-week. What more could you want?
Tickets. Facebook Event.
Tonight
For real.
A Yawn Worth Yelling
San Jose's A Yawn Worth Yelling is part of the bill tomorrow night at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall. They released the free track below right before Christmas. Their gift to you...

French Cassettes
Headlining this Saturday at Brick and Mortar Music Hall is French Cassettes. Following the trend from yesterday, we'd like to post a great video of a favorite song of ours.
Coast Jumper
Have you heard Coast Jumper yet? We are excited to be playing with them this Saturday and are happy to give them some real estate on this hear website. Enjoy their album, if you haven't already.

Season 2 of Mr. Kind
This weekend, we'll be playing our first pair of shows of the new year. On Friday, we're playing at Red Rock Coffee in Mountain View with our buddies, River Shiver.
Then on Saturday, we're part of a great bill at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall that includes French Cassettes, Coast Jumper, and A Yawn Worth Yelling.
After that, we're not going to be playing much live for a bit as we head into the studio to record new material.
But let's not worry about that now. Hope to see you this weekend.
You're OK from The Lost Church
Our friend Clara Rice cut this rad video of "You're OK" from our show at The Lost Church at the beginning of the month.
We Wish You A Merry Marqissmas
Those who know Jon and I (Brian) know that we've been repping another Bay Area artist. Marqiss is an inspiring and sincere R&B songwriter that we've had the pleasure of watching (and helping) grow.
He's featured on #Christmas (where we've contributed a song as well) and this Thursday, we'll be helping to present Marqissmas, a festive holiday event at the Subterranean Arthouse in Berkeley.
No words I use can accurately describe Marqiss so I'll allow the trailer below to do the talking.
The Lost Church
We had the great opportunity to perform at The Lost Church last night. For the last year I've been hearing great things about this little theater and after months and months of email exchanges, we finally locked down a date.
We were joined by Owen Roberts, who performs with the band Shady Maples. His soul and voice as a songwriter made it a pleasure to share the night with him.
We couldn't be more grateful to have performed in such a beautiful space. An intimate crowd was treated to our last show of the year. Joined by our friend Jesse Cafiero of Split Screens on upright bass, it was a great chance to re-arrange some of our songs and play stripped down versions that we had honed during our tour last month.
We definitely plan on being back there early next year.
Thank you for a wonderful 2012.
<3 Mr. Kind
Tonight at The Lost Church!
Tonight we're performing our last show of the year at The Lost Church, a beautiful theater in the Mission. To close out the year, we'll be playing a special lounge set, with our friend Jesse Cafiero (of Split Screens) on upright bass and Owen Roberts (of Shady Maples) opening up the show.
We hope you can make it and thanks for a wonderful year 1 for Mr. Kind.
