the da2 party banter is so. its so,,, time to say the most awful thing possible to you rn. anders point blank saying did you ever want to commit suicide. fenris responding without hesitation did you??? isabela constantly bringing up aveline's dead husband so aveline calls her a whore. fenris saying very politely and calmly that all mages suck big balls and anders tearing his hair out. merrill being like idk bro spirits are just dudes to me and anders says they represent SINS why dont you LISTEN-- people just straight up lying to each other about how they feel about things just because they don't want the other person to win. this is not a comprehensive list this is just what happened the last two times i played. i love them so much they are all so awful

The biggest thing to me is Merrill had her head straight in DAO... It was just the loss of the unchosen dalish warden and TamTam that made her crazy I think.

Like I genuinely forgot Merrill was in Origins until I replayed it and she was a stick in the mud apprentice to the keeper and then she became lost to the wind ditzy bubbly in DA2 and I have no idea why besides the loss of those two.

every once in a while, you catch anders in the light—rare to find some that isn’t harsh, at least around kirkwall—and it’s like a revelation about him all over again, like a blow to the gut in a taproom brawl, something you should’ve but didn’t see coming. it’s not as though you don’t already know everything you could, all the backstory, all the character motivation, the cause and the conflict—or the boy he was, the lonely young man, the desperate mage. all the times he was denied something he needed, although it’s never clear to anyone if freedom is the same thing as love. he wanted both and so both ended up being what he was. but that tenderness, that vulnerability, that sadness shifted to the barest of softened smiles—he was all that, too. and it’s hard, so damn hard, not to give him everything he never knew how to ask for, much less hold onto.

A thing that I love about Cullen: the way he plays chess.

So, there are three options when you play chess against Commander Cullen in-game, and only one of them nets you a victory. 

One option is to let him win, and, of course, he does.

Another option is to cheat. But when you do this, he still wins. Not just with you, either: every single game you witness with him against a character who cheats ends with Cullen winning; he canonically beats the Inquisitor, Dorian, and Leliana (she plays him in that scene if Dorian is unavailable) when they try to get the better of him. He really just radiates smugness when this happens, too (especially against Leliana, the sneakiest of them all). It’s like he beats cheaters out of spite.

The final option, playing fairly, is the only scenario in which you can beat him. This always seemed odd, to me; he’s obviously an extremely skilled player, who can win even if you give yourself an edge. So why do you win if you choose not to do so?

Easy. He’s letting you. 

Why? Anybody’s guess. Maybe he appreciates the honesty after playing so often against someone who cheats. Maybe he remembers the frustration of always losing against his sister and wants you to come back instead of giving up. Fill in your own headcanons. But I just can’t shake the feeling he throws that game on purpose.
