             “  o-observant  ?  ”  grace  repeated,  looking  wholly  unimpressed  by  his  explanation.

as  far  as  explanations  went,  it  was  a  pretty  shit  one  and  she  was  about  to  say  so  before  she  saw  him  open  the  door  -  and  then  her  face  paled  once  more.  despite  the  danger  this  new  person  posed,  it  was  still  a  relatively  safe  room  with  no  undead  or  scary  looking  monsters  in  it.  she  personally  wouldn't  have  minded  another  moment  or  two  just  going  back  and  forth  if  it  meant  getting  to  stay  somewhere  relatively  normal.  alas,  things  were  not  going  her  way  today,  it  would  seem.

but  he  was  right  to  a  point.  interrogating  each  other  now  would  lead  nowhere  and  just  waste  time.  and  who  knew  what  else  this  hell  hole  had  in  store  for  them.  she  wasn't  eager  to  find  out.  but  at  least  she  had  someone  with  her  -  worst  off,  if  he  ended  up  terrible,  she  could  push  him  in  front  of  one  of  the  monsters.

“  r-right,  ”  she  finally  agreed  verbally,  frowning  as  she  followed  him  out  into  the  hall,  gun  never  lowered,  but  voice  quieter  now.

“  i-i've  been  memorizing  the  layout  as  i-i've  been  going.  it's…  uh,  confusing,  b-but  i  remember  where  the  doors  are,”  she  finally  admitted,  stepping  in  front  of  him  so  she  could  lead  the  way  and  show  him  what  she  meant.

she  didn't  like  having  her  back  to  him.  but  she  didn't  really  have  a  choice.  if  he  didn't  know  where  he  was  going,  there  was  no  point  standing  behind  him.  it  was  quicker  this  way,  more  efficient…  and  well,  nothing  else  would  be  sneaking  up  behind  her  now,  besides  him. 

“  c-come  on,  this  way  -  it  only  get  worse  from  here,”  she  muttered,  not  waiting  for  a  response.

Humming a positive when she repeated his words, the tall blond strained to listen for traitorous noises in the hallway, something making the skin on his neck prickle ever so slightly.

Something was strange about this place. Stranger than it would already seem. But he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

Letting Grace slip past him, his instincts screamed at him — not because of imminent danger in their closest proximity, but due to how the entire building felt to him like it was a breathing, living thing, thick with not just death and decay, but… mutations.

Wesker had been around many forms of those in his years, and while something about it all felt eerily familiar, there was something lying beneath it all that caused not only frustration, but also a modicum of curiosity to rear its head. Yet for the moment he would have to file those hunches away to be followed up after Grace showed him what she had found so far.

Quietly he moved, following her step, gaze carefully observing their surroundings with calm alertness.

"You memorized it? Impressive…" His voice was completely void of any indication that he meant what he said, but he did. It was not easy to recall the labyrinthian floor plans of even regular hospitals, but care centers that he could already sense had been likely built in the same way Trevor had built Spencer's Mansion were a wholly different beast.

As they moved through the main hall and ended up on the far back, Wesker exhaled sharply through his nose, a sound half-dismissal, half vexation. Just like he had assumed, the structure of the door implicated a puzzle which pieces they likely had to find. How droll.

"I see…" he said quietly, left gloved hand coming up to let leather-clad fingertips glide over the places were something apparently had to be inserted. "Moon… Sun… Star…" he read as he went, a heavy sound resounding in his throat after, not quite a growl, but too annoyed to be a mere sigh.

"You didn't happen to see anything related to these three things?"

Wesker finally turned to face Grace again, his mind already racing miles ahead as he thought of the many different ways a puzzle like that could be designed.

Gentle pattering noises of rain echoing through the hallways of the police station created an underlying murmur to the daily goings-on in the place, busy steps walking and running up and down, aggravated noises of criminals being taken into custody, the faint laughter of colleagues exchanging good-natured jokes at coffee machine.

It was no rare sight to see members of the police traipse about the corridor leading to the S.T.A.R.S. office, curiosity getting the better of them. Many dreamed of one day being able to join the Police Department's special force, others simply wanted to get a glimpse of the mysterious Captain or one of the carefully recruited specialists. And sometimes, one of the latter would even agree to spare some time and offer a training on the shooting range.

Rainy days seemingly always brought the visitors around, when no one felt much inclined to spend their lunch break outside or head into the city, everyone cooped up waiting for the weather to clear up — which it finally had in the late hours of the day, the spring sun allowing some final rays to filter through the windows, bringing with them a little warmth of soon-to-be-summer.

By now, the hours had moved on and evening had settled over the station, the steady buzz slowly dying down as people made their way home, a sense of calm and relaxation spreading through the S.T.A.R.S. Captain's office which he privately enjoyed.

Fingerless gloves cast aside on the mahogany table top, Albert Wesker sat in his chair, leaned back with one elbow propped up on his armrest, chin in hand, as he studied a piece of paper neatly clipped to a board, held in his other. The past days had been rather busy for him and his team as they had been assigned to help the regular forces with a specifically tricky series of crimes committed in the south of the city.

Nothing his S.T.A.R.S. couldn't handle, naturally.

Regardless, Wesker had utilized their time in the field to carefully observe each and every team member's skills and assets, carefully noting where improvements were in order. As such, a training course for a hand full of his team was filled out in the form he held now, his pen — neatly engraved with his name because his old ones would always mysteriously vanish — swiftly flying over the form, neat penmanship only slightly suffering from the pose he held.

Only when he was done, the board placed on his table and his body stretching, did he truly take in his surroundings again.

His own office was almost swallowed in darkness, except for his desk lamp, but from the room outside the light still came pouring in. Not remembering whether he left it on or not, Wesker rolled to his feet and moved to the door of his office, rounding the corner to let his gaze wander over the tables in the room.

Not everyone had been assigned a desk as the team was always on rotation, only those that spent nearly every day at the police station anyway had been granted a seat — and the go-ahead to decorate the place. While Wesker was not a man of sentimentalities, he well understood how to motivate people. And motivation rarely worked by not letting people express themselves. As such, not only were the walls lined with prizes won at various competitions, but also pictures lined some of the desks, and a darts game was hung on one of the nearby walls.

And of course there was the decked out place of one Christopher Redfield, not only sporting his favorite jacket, but also a guitar which sometimes filled the air with tunes the captain admittedly had found quite pleasing so far.

Seeing the man in question still hunched over his paperwork, Wesker crossed his arms over his chest as he canted his head, an ever-so-slight motion preceding his words.

"Chief Irons is not wont to pay overtime, Christopher."

He had not expected to see anyone else still around at this time, especially since the other man had a reputation of spending his hours off work downtown with Speyer and Vickers.

it's been super hot again today so I didn't really get much of anything done, but it has since cooled down a lot, I took a shower and am now ready to tackle stuff at last!

might be a bit more spotty tomorrow depending, because I have to take my cat to the vet in the morning and have some work stuff to get done with after, but then I'll have 6 days off work so plenty of time to write then!

If we write, or have plotted stuff, and you drop off the rpc for however long, this will never be a reason for me to unfollow. (the only reason I sometimes sort out the blogs I follow is if nothing ever came of following them in the first place.) ··› ask memes never expire. feel free to choose and peruse the tag and send stuff in anytime. ··› feel free to grab replies to ask memes I do and make a thread out of them if you want your muse to react. Ever the professional, he listens intently. Never interrupting or interjecting as his former colleague explains himself. It was an almost expected reasoning. Though until now, it is the first time anyone with a shared tie to Umbrella has felt inclined to make the offer.

Certainly, the fact that the disdain that seeps out of him when the topic of Alfred comes up is shared certainly helps. It's peculiar how, despite the amount of time that has passed since then, he experiences a chafing sensation inwardly. The sting of something close to anger. Though he'd learned later on that Alfred's hubris had eventually unwound him, just like all of those who fly too close to the sun, it is the first time H.U.N.K can register in his memory that anyone has agreed with him on just how aggravating he'd been.

Of course, Alfred Wesker had a great deal to gain.

"You need someone who won't disappoint you, in other words." He considers the explanation with a clinical tone. It's not the first time someone has sought him out simply because they want a guarantee. But Wesker is at least honest rather than flattering. A trait he appreciates even if his clipped tone suggests otherwise.

"I need clear-cut and precise details on the risks and what I am getting." He folds his arms over his chest. Already, he is processing several scenarios in his mind about where and what he's about to be asked to fetch. "I don't take blind missions anymore."

Quick-witted replies given to his words provided reassurance in the matter of hiring the so-called Grim Reaper, his reputation by far preceding him as was wont to people that became legends long before their inescapable demise.

It was hard to read someone who kept himself as confined to his inner workings as Wesker himself did, and as such, he could only guess whether or not the mention of Alfred Ashford had elicited the desired effect in the other man. Regardless, it appeared his request had not fallen on deaf ears and as such, Wesker nodded when the other one finally spoke up.

"Yes, that. And someone who I know won't lodge a knife in my back while we're out in the field."

There it was. The detail he had withheld.

While certainly capable of taking care of the matter himself, Wesker had a distinct desire to visit the place himself, if only to ensure the samples would make their way into his very own hands first. Of course he was no stranger to the reputation H.U.N.K. had — being the sole survivor of all the missions he had ever been sent on. But whether it was hubris or confidence in his own powers, now readily at his fingertips after he had risen from the dead, Wesker would not shrink to what sounded like fishwife tales.

A faint smile tugged at his mouth when H.U.N.K. began listing his conditions, Wesker's nod being slight and curt, yet clearly visible.

"Naturally," he replied, reaching for a folder carefully prepared on the table next to where he was standing, holding it out for the other man to take and peruse. Therein he would find maps, details about the area, as well as a list of expenses covered and payments offered.

"I am not in the habit of wasting resources… or potential. The route you find in those files is a blueprint, to be adjusted as you see fit. You will receive half the payment upfront as soon as you agree, the other half upon successfully completing the mission. I would prefer to keep the team as small as possible, but am willing to take your counsel into consideration. Any questions?"

Interrogation had been in progress for the better part of half an hour, and Wesker had elected to sit quietly, gaze pinned on the suspect with an intent, unrelenting stare able to cause discomfort by just watching him watch the other party.

Arms crossed over his chest, he had left it to Chris to lead the interrogation, his pen — engraved with his name — flying over a piece of paper pinned to a clip board every now end then, not leaving out any detail perceived.

By the end of it, he had run down his observations in a cold, calculated manner, even-voiced and stoic, fact after fact being brought down with no forgiveness or empathy. The suspect had seemed close to sending his breakfast back out into the world any moment as the both of them left the interrogation room.

It was then as they moved through the hallway and towards the stairs leading up into the second floor that Chris had spoken up, his words hanging in the air between them as Wesker seemed to not hear them momentarily, handing the secretary sitting behind her desk the clipboard as he passed her station. Only when they passed through the door and into the great hall did Wesker slow his steps, standing close to the railing overlooking the entrance below, one hand placed on the rich wooden surface.

"A good eye for details, maybe," he spoke quietly, with the same, even voice that had hammered out observation and evidence in the suspects face moments prior. His gaze wandered to where his point man was standing, considering him briefly before he rolled one shoulder in a one-sided shrug. "…and a fairly good pattern-recognition."

It was his way of handing out a joke, although not many understood his sense of humor — not that it bothered him too much.

Chris, on the other hand, had caught his attention with the remark he made, the fact that he was able to deduce facts about Wesker while interrogating a third party piquing a mild interest in the other man's skills. He was quite observant himself. Something Wesker had noticed on occasion, and carefully filed away.

Someone as alert as the other could become a problem in the long run. Or a valuable asset.

"You did well in there." Rare was it that he dished out praise for someone's work, but he did when it was appropriate. And so far, his S.T.A.R.S. had not disappointed him, all things considered.

"A couple more times and you can train the remaining others. Forest can certainly use some more practice."

A sharp exhale through his nose conveyed his irritation about the man — not enough to be palpable, just noticeable for the lack of emotions displayed altogether. Forest was a skilled man, certainly, but his discipline was lacking in Wesker's eyes. Enough to have his captain's eyes on him more closely, for the time being. With the ongoing investigations in terrorist activities throughout the city, they would likely all need to branch out their skill sets sooner rather than later.

𝐁𝐄𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐎𝐑 𝟏/?

My portrayal of Wesker is a very dynamic thing. Therefore his behavior depends heavily on the timeline he interacts with other people in. Yes, he is a villain and I write him as such. He will not be watered down or softened. However, his character and behavior change immensely over time. 

PRE-MANSION / S.T.A.R.S.-era / RESIDENT EVIL 1 During this time, he is rather approachable. For one, he has to protect his actual plans and the work he does outside of being the Captain of S.T.A.R.S., but also is he incredibly manipulative and opportunistic. He does not approach people from a volatile standpoint, much less will needlessly start any fights (except with Irons, maybe). It is canon that people at the R.P.D. liked Wesker a lot, thought he was “cool”, and even tried to apply for S.T.A.R.S. because of how popular he was. Conclusively, while I still write him as a little odd of sorts due to his emotional underdevelopment, people usually would not approach him with hostility either. 

POST-MANSION UP TO RESIDENT EVIL 4 After the mansion incident and injecting himself with the prototype virus, Wesker’s behavior began to change. For one, he was able to survive the otherwise deadly attack of the T-002 Tyrant, while the injection itself granted him inhuman powers. Both only fueled his belief of being superior to other human beings (a belief ingrained into him since his earliest childhood as part of Project W). In the first years, he did not yet notice any downsides to his infection with the virus, fully believing his body had entirely adapted to it. Later on, he would learn he needed a way to stabilize the virus as his body began to reject it slowly but surely - an immense cause of frustration to Wesker, while he continued researching his Uroboros virus in plans of (among other goals) overcoming what he deemed a curable weakness. Meeting him during these years will show him more hostile - his masquerade is no longer needed, and he can play with open cards. At the same time, my portrayal of Wesker suffers from the increasing effects of the virus on his mind and psyche, causing his aggression levels to spike. 

RESIDENT EVIL 5 During this time, Wesker is the most “unhinged”, and increasingly so. The virus eats away at his sanity faster and faster, only spurred on by the information he procures from Spencer and the continuous obstacles thrown his way by various people. He is extremely volatile, aggressive, and spiraling here, a far cry from the completely calm and cold man he used to be years ago. 

RE:BORN VERSE With his cloned body being imbued with his consciousness upon his death, thanks to the mold infection he experimented with, Wesker is now in a body free of the progenitor and Uroboros virus. His mind is his own again, which causes him to be more like he was in the times before the outbreak in Raccoon City. He is still his old, opportunistic, and manipulative self, but the volatile and aggressive behavior is drastically reduced again, making him easier to approach and talk to.

how skilled is your muse at communication? 

Generally speaking, Wes is extremely skilled in communication. He is well-versed in a lot of topics and has extensive knowledge on them (specifically regarding his work, be it as Captain of S.T.A.R.S. or as a scientist of course, but also random things like obscure knowledge about coffee / coffee beans because of reasons, nutrition, health/sports/etc., even fabrics for example, since he values high quality clothes). So talking to him about anything he is very knowledgeable about will usually be not only interesting but possibly even entertaining because of the random tidbits he knows. Aside from that, he has a way of expressing himself (while his language, as I mentioned before, is rather “posh”) - I like to think he learned how to talk in front of people early on in life so there is never any nervousness or insecurity involved for him. He does fumble when it comes to communicating emotions (as touched on many times before already) or anything relating to family / bonds that rely on emotions and vulnerability. While he doesn’t understand much about it, he did read up a lot on it so he knew how to mask this lack of knowledge and experience.

are there any fears your muse still holds from childhood? 

Fear is something he doesn’t really acknowledge. He does feel fear (as he does any emotions, just because I headcanon him to be underdeveloped in that regard doesn’t mean he lacks emotions completely!), but he usually has ways to re-direct unwanted feelings into something productive, for a lack of a better word. I also like to think he was trained to redirect his emotions, especially fear, and disregard it too. Both working in the scientific field he did as well as later in the military, I could see how it might have been an integral part of his early life. That being said, he does have a profound fear of dying and growing old. It gets worse when he meets Spencer later, and sees what became of him, but it’s definitely something that carried over from his childhood (and, again, the teachings he underwent as part of Project W). Death and age were treated like a disease that he needed to find a cure for, and while both were not very present during his early years, around the time of the mansion incident both growing older and dying become things he has to face. He does so by infecting himself, enabling him to overcome death. While he still ages, his research for Uroboros was supposed to also eliminate that “threat” for him. In his Re:Born verse, Wes achieved both a certain degree of immortality as well as a halt in aging, at least for the time being. I leave it open to interactions, plots, etc. if the effects wear off or if something inconvenient happens with his mold infection long-term.

what is a lesson your muse’s parent(s)/guardian taught them that they still hold onto? 

The one thing he was repeatedly taught, either by words or even actions, was that he could not trust anybody but himself, and to always strive for his own gain. I often reference the file you can find in RE0 where Marcus reports about his various plans and experiments in the Umbrella Executive Training Center, talking about how he noticed that Wesker and Birkin started to get along well and how Marcus was excited to pit the two of them against each other. It reads to me like there was some tentative form of friendship, or at least a form of positive comradeship growing between Wesker and Birkin, and Marcus had a sadistic joy in destroying that by making them work against each other. I’m fairly sure this was by far the only time something like this happened, so assuming that not being able to trust anybody and always only look out for himself would be something that stuck deeply with Wesker and carried over into his later life. I also like to think that the way he later treated the S.T.A.R.S. members during the mansion incident mirrors what Marcus did to him. Wesker would assume it was a form of “character building”, strengthening the people going through the experience of relying solely on themselves (be it by physically splitting the squad up, or by pitting them against each other like he did with Barry). In some way, he probably even considered doing them a favor.

does your muse know how to cook? what is the most complicated dish they’re able to make?

Wes loves to cook, yeah. It’s something born out of necessity for him, as he is extremely paranoid especially in his early verses (pre-mansion and RE1), always expecting to be sold out by Umbrella and taken out at a moment’s notice. It also ties in with his focus on nutrition and keeping his body in a good condition, so he would eventually expand his skills in cooking to the point where he was very good at it. The more you practice something, the better you get at it, so I like to think Wes started challenging himself to increasingly complicated meals and recipes, so he would probably be able to cook almost anything. What he doesn’t excel at right off the bat is baking, because he doesn’t like sweet things too much (and frankly, never needed to learn how to bake a cake for example, because he was never that close with anyone -unless plotted otherwise!-) He would likely take up the challenge to learn how to bake things though.
