I Said It 6 Times The word NO is spoken in over 6,500 languages. It has the same meaning. It is a universal language that every single person can understand and adhere to. Yet, every single day thousands of men and women are raped and sexually assaulted.
Semester 2
The aim of this project is to address an unspoken issue within media and society and successfully change the minds of many individuals. By creating a very satirical body of work targeted to those who refuse to acknowledge the importance of the issue; I aim to develop an understanding myself and educate the masses about same sex sexual assault, violence and domestic abuse. Currently, there is no awareness for female same sex violence. Women are not able to be seen as the offender in serious crimes such as rape, sexual violence and domestic abuse. It is unheard of and society plays a big role in this. Portraying men to be the only individual possible of committing such acts - we land ourselves in a situation where if a woman was to commit an offense along these lines it would not be taken seriously. And that is exactly the case. In Scotland there is no law that allows a female to be the offender of rape even though rape itself is a crime of power and control, and should never be about gender. The aim of this project is to raise these issues and to create a campaign that will successfully speak to the victims, the offenders and the public and allow this crime to be seen as what it really is; a crime - not anything less. By creating a campaign video and collection of works following the issues surrounding this I hope to create a body of work suitable to educate the world once again. I will do this by researching into similar charities working closely with these issues; Rape, Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. I will also look closer at LGBT charities and support networks as well as research what has already been done across the SV as a whole. I hope to learn myself in this process. I also aim to create social networks for people to communicate as well as a space for people to share their own experiences in a hope for this subject to be much more open for a change to happen.

#Fiona Banner
Fiona Banner born in 1966 is a British artist, who’s work links to my chosen word…Palimpsest. The writing is overlapping, fading away ever so slightly like that of gravestones. Here she used a natural material using it to her advantage. The black and white makes it look aged giving it that sense of evanescent as the text extends. The white wall symbolises purity and cleanliness with the black text printed upon it symbolising a sense of power and mystery. Here a story is being told where some has faded away and some is still existing, although some words stand out more which gives it that sense of importance that is emphasised.

Project Undefeated The Project
Project Undefeated; end same sex violence and sexual assault.
The Project
I read an article in January which was looking at the nature of same sex violence and sexual assault. “There is a belief that women are the “gentle” sex. We are nurturing, kind, tolerant, compassionate, understanding, caring… and so, with that in mind, surely lesbian relationships are always founded on mutual love and respect for one another. Right?” This quotation itself was the major push for a project I have found myself inevitably involved in. As a victim myself of this “lesbian” sexual abuse, I can clarify this statement.
Myth: Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault does not occur within lesbian relationships.
In fact, the subject is so controversial in main stream media with nobody having the guts to talk about it as it is plastered as this ideal image of entertainment for (I can’t help it but be sexist here) men. Although mainstream media is much more open to showing real, beautiful relationships between women there is still an aspect of it across pornography where these relationships are exploited and ridiculed as though they are not truly worthy of meaning.
This is one of the many reasons why women do not come forward or speak up about what they have experienced when it comes to domestic violence and sexual assault. The law does not allow much justice for these victims with laws that do not work in favor of rape victims and in cases where there is hope – it is much harder to prove as women are seen as not capable of such things.
Rape itself is a crime of power and control and women are more than capable of being the perpetrator just as men are. There is a common misconception about who a rapist can be with men being the target. And, yes, the statistics are much higher for men but how can we say that when we don’t even give women the right to commit such crimes? It is a real thing. Women, and men, are sexually harassed, assaulted and raped by other women every single day. These crimes do not have a particular gender and are capable of being inflicted upon by any single person on this planet despite what laws say.
The aim of this project is to clarify this and make a statement. A statement against mainstream ideals where women are exploited. A statement against laws which state a woman can do no harm. A statement against pornography where rape is seen as a genre rather than a serious offense. This project aims to put into light the victims of these crimes and give them a voice which nobody has been listening to.

Project Undefeated kicked of two months ago with these posters put up around my university campus. It is a subject that is hardly talked about and I wanted to face this medium of entertainment which makes it so hard for female victims of same sex assault and violence to come forward.
