Extracurriculars As A Postgrad

Hey guys, me again!

So, in the past couple of days, I set up some extracurricular stuff for me to do in between my coursework and classes. Because everyone needs a break every now and then, right?

So on Friday, I had a meeting with a manager of Fibre Media, a branch of DUSA Media on campus (just a bunch of media outlets for students to read/listen to & take part in etc). So I made the commute yet again to Dundee while listening to more episodes of the Spirits podcast (which I still recommend if myths and legends and general spookiness interests you).

Fibre Media is the branch of online blogs, in which contributors can send in articles to their editors, and it will be posted online. At my meeting, I found out they had just started a Creative Writing section, which I am very interested in; as someone whose half their degree is in Creative Writing, of course I am interested.

Unfortunately, they already have a Creative Writing editor, a role in which I had been hoping to take on (not necessarily for CW as I hadn’t known prior to the meeting that there was a CW section) as I hope to go into the publishing industry after I finish my Masters, and I felt being an editor would give me some experience in that department. However, I am also very happy to be a contributor to the section (though I do need to write new content pronto). So I can’t wait to get started with that, as soon as my writer’s block decides it wants to finally leave.

And then on Saturday, I made another trip back to Dundee for the Archery Society’s coached session. At least this time, I didn’t have to take the bus because my sisters were going to Dundee to do some shopping, so I got a lift there and back.

Can I just say, archery is so so so cool, and I recommend it to anyone who has a little nerdy/geeky heart like mine (Legolas, anyone? Hawkeye? Katniss Everdeen?). I had gone to a few archery sessions before a couple of years ago, but I had to stop because of other commitments in my undergrad life. However, this year, I feel I can go consistently because I will probably be largely going to their Saturday sessions rather than their Thursday sessions - it being on a weekend helps a lot, especially since I’m expecting to be fairly busy on weekdays during deadline season.

Also, it turns out I am actually kind of decent at archery? Like, when did that happen?? I definitely don’t remember being that good when I went a couple of years ago. But it’s still awesome, and cool, and I highly recommend (watch yourself though, I have a bruise on the inside of my elbow where I accidentally hit myself with the string).

I may or may not also join the Medieval Re-enactment Society, which is also on Saturdays. Since I’ll be coming up for Archery, why not? It also sounds very fun, and hey, who doesn’t want to learn sword fighting?

I have also been reading ‘A Clash Of Kings’ by George R.R. Martin in my spare time. I have almost finished it, and will be moving onto the next book in the series (probably tomorrow, I only have about 100 pages left). I also just finished the first season of the 2019 Fruits Basket, and omg the feels!! If anime/maga is your thing and you haven’t seen/read it yet, go and watch/read Fruits Basket! And even if it’s not your thing, watch it anyway. It’s a rollercoaster of a ride, I can promise you that, and season two is meant to start in 2020, though we don’t have an exact date yet. But I am very excited to see the manga completely animated this time around (I liked the original, but it didn’t have a second season, and it changed some things from the manga).

But that’s it for today. That’s all my extracurriculars that I have been up to so far in my first week as a new postgrad!
