WORKOUT 09.19
Today's workout should be named "Buttlash" because I had my butt kicked BIG TIME. It started out at the gym with 10 mins. on the treadmill. A nice run at 6.5. Then, I bounced upstairs to do a circuit workout in the functional training room. BUTTLASH 1: there was a class and three personal trainers in the room, which meant no room for me. I wasn't feelin' any of the other cardio options and there wasn't a group exercise class coming up, so I left. I went home and started a body weight cardio circuit with a ton of 30 sec. jump rope intervals. That's how BUTTLASH 2 occurred. Attempting double unders, I literally lashed my butt a dozen times. BUTTLASH 3 was all the squats in the second circuit I did. I was bored with the first so I picked up a different workout on Pinterest and did that for my second round. And, to cap off the evening, BUTTLASH 4 was whatever little bug decided to attack on my last set of burpees. All in all, not my finest workout but still glad I put in the time!
Keepin' on track! Remember, it all boils down to calories.
WORKOUT 09.09
First indoor cycling class in a while and it rocked. 45 minutes, plus I learned the Y is hosting a master class to train new instructors so I'm likely signing up for that in October. Stay tuned for more...
PROGRESS + GOALS
Let's start with how far I've come...which isn't all that far but you have to start somewhere, right? In July, I took some measurements but didn't change anything in my diet. I did workout a little more, definitely added more strength training, and the most important thing to note is that I feel better. Here's how I stack up:

One HUGE barrier to exercise is not knowing what to do at the gym. So many people make it to the gym, only to feel lost or intimidated by all the machines and people. Next thing you know, you're counting the seconds on the elliptical...bored out of your mind.
I used to be terrified to workout at the gym if I wasn't doing a group exercise class. But, if I missed a class, I wouldn't go to the gym and fall into a rut. So I started searching on blogs, Pinterest and around the Internet for workouts and that changed everything. Now I have a plan, I'm excited to try a new workout and I get to say I accomplished something new. That's one of the reasons working out with a personal trainer is so great -- you get all those benefits, plus a great body and enhanced health without actually having to search for workouts on your own :)
Long story short, today's workout was a treadmill workout courtesy of Pinterest. Perfect to stretch out my legs and squeeze in a quick workout on a busy evening.

You can't change body composition without cleaning up your diet. And, self-monitoring is a tremendous motivator. Now the two combine. Let's see how this works :)
Finished the first two Personal Trainer lessons last week. Last week was all about communication, motivation and exercise adherence. In addition to safe and effective instruction, Personal Trainers must be able to motivate clients to start...and adhere to an exercise program.
You read a lot about yo-yo dieting in magazines but I think yo-yo fitness is just as big a problem. How many times have you started a vigorous program (I'll workout 6 days a week or I'll start two-a-days to fit into that dress) just to revert back to your old habits one or two weeks in? Well, it turns out the key is moderation (same as in dieting, FYI). Exercisers are less likely to drop out of a moderate exercise program (about 50% less, that's a LOT less) than a vigorous ones. And, if you can avoid burnout, I guarantee you'll learn to love exercise and see results.
So what does that mean? Take it easy at the gym? No. It means work smarter, not harder. Personal Trainers start with goal assessment, and then create exercise programs that focus on achievement. You spend more time focused on what makes exercise work for you and reap the benefits of a stronger, healthier body.
This week, I'm practicing what I've learned and working on some goals for myself. I haven't gotten to the point where I can design an exercise program; but, I can use these goals as motivation to adhere to the Personal Training program and making health and fitness a more primary focus in my life.
