every single thing about this interaction is so incredibly revealing in the funiest ways possible
okay, here's the breakdown:
this man heard "keeping our kids safe" and very clearly thought the mom meant "destroying trans people" and not "keeping our kids safe"
once he realized he just stumbled headlong into a real-life face to face interaction with a trans child and her supportive mother in public with witnesses, he panics
he can't be seen as supportive of trans rights because he's a weasley fascist looking to pander to a bigoted base, but he also is a sharp enough weasle to know that he can't just say or do anything that would upset a child or start a fight with a parent because that would make him look like villain that he is
he replies with a standard transphobic talking point, but doesn't misgender the girl: either because he knows that might make her cry and that would look bad for him, because her gender and pronouns are much less important to his flustered mind than the fact that she is the enemy trans, or because he is already too confused to understand anything
but this response only causes confusion, and he can't clarify what he means right here and right now because that would make it all too obvious what his political goals are and, again, might make a little girl cry in public.
clarification is requested of him
this is basically the worst possible thing for him at this point, he has to find some way to disengage. but he can't think of anything, he feels scared and trapped.
oh, but he must be feeling scared because he's under threat! that's it! the only to disengage is to call out this vicious attack and leave.
so this very brave and normal man accuses a young girl and her mother of attacking him for asking him a follow-up question, and then runs away. all because he never considered that he could just not be transphobic
