What really bugs me is that they think it’s more “realistic” for a queer character to get rejected than have what they want. There very much are queer people who found happiness with the person they wanted. And I don’t know why something that does happen to some people is deemed as “too unrealistic” for a show where people have to fight monsters from another world.

If byler isn’t canon then why were there COUPLES standing together in pairs, one of them being Mike and Will.

What was the point of the blue and yellow lighting and the way Mike talked to Will vs El if it was gonna end in queerbait?

“It’s a show for outcasts!!” Straight white men who have “nerdy” interests are actually pretty normal in society I fear.

When I was younger, I realized I was queer. I pushed it down, told myself lies because it wasn’t “normal.” I didn’t even know if it was an option, really. Like my existence was wrong in some way. Not even because of people’s beliefs getting pushed on me, but because I never saw people like me. I never saw two women together like it was the most normal thing in the world. It was always man and woman. Stranger Things could’ve done something so powerful for people like me. People who needed representation and to see what they’ve feared for so long. Yet they give Will an epilogue boyfriend and a silent rejection from the guy he’s wanted for years. Then the canon lesbian couple splits up. Leaves you with all the straight couples. You can’t write about queer people “finding themselves” and try to be this ally when in the end you simply put them through one of the biggest things that make them hate themselves. For once, I want to see queer people do something other than struggle. Because we’re hardly ever the ones with a happy ending. We just got nothing, and I know if younger me saw that I would’ve been crushed.

Cutgate is literally just a cope because people are mad they didn’t get what they wanted. Yes, volume 2 sucked. But let’s use our brains for more than two seconds. A literal actor from the show came out debunking it. Yet there are people more willing to believe a random on twitter so they can live in their mind rather than facing the reality of the situation. You are believing a complete stranger with hardly any credibility over someone who has seen the script and actually worked on the show and has been working on it for a WHILE. Not only that, but there’s so much harm being done to the LGBTQ+ community. People are review bombing and now that’s being used to show that queer rep is bad for ratings. We still have one episode left and we don’t know how things are gonna play out. I’m just saying we shouldn’t immediately complain about things not happening when we still have time.

PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU WERE PROMOTING ‘CUTGATE’ (OR ARE FAMILIAR WITH IT) AND CARE ABOUT THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY‼️‼️‼️

THE SITUATION (quickly explained to people who aren’t aware of what’s happening):

S5E7 (‘the bridge’) has a disproportionately negative rating compared to other episodes of this season on IMDb. this is partially because a lot of people were sharing a google docs file around social media which contained “proof” that many plot points and different scenes in volume 2 were subjected to censorship and cuts during the editing process, hence the decline in the quality of these episodes.

the emergence of this file, coupled with many people’s already existing dissatisfaction and disappointment with the writing of volume 2, led to a movement called ‘cutgate’, which encouraged (among other things) downvoting episode 7 on IMDb as a way of getting Netflix’s or the show’s creator’s attention to their anger at vol. 2.

THE PROBLEM:

by review bombing and downvoting episode 7 you might think that you are helping to deliver the message to Netflix and the Duffers that you are disappointed or angered at the poor writing and handling of characters and pivotal moments in volume 2. the thing is: you are not helping to fight for the cause you think you are.

episode 7 is special because it contains the scene where Will comes out to his friends and family. by downvoting only episode 7, you are helping homophobes to push forward the message to executives and streaming services that people don’t want to see queer characters or queerness being in the spotlight in media. from now on they will have this weapon and will use this rating against us every time we claim that we want more LGBTQ+ characters and stories.

let’s be honest here: netflix and executives aren’t going to look into the true reason of why people disliked episode 7. they’re not going to look into ‘cutgate’ or whatever, they will jump straight to the conclusion that Will’s coming out scene is the reason behind that low rating, since that’s the ONLY episode in season 5 so far that has received this crushingly negative feedback. just for reference, by he time i’m writing this, S5E5 has a rating of 8.2 and S5E6 a rating of 8.4, and they were also part of volume 2. all the other episodes in season 5 so far have a rating equal to or above 8.0!

TO CLARIFY:

i am not saying that you can’t be upset or disappointed at the way Will’s coming out scene was written or with the fact that main characters were sidelined in vol. 2, etc. the point is though: forming an alliance or actively promoting/helping a movement that benefits homophobes is not the way to go about it (plus, ‘cutgate’ has also officially been confirmed to be a false allegation). you are a 100% allowed to be mad at netflix or at the Duffers, but you have to keep in mind that season 5 isn’t over yet, the finale (the episode that bears all of the answers) is still not here. we don’t know how things will end so we shouldn’t jump to conclusions and act on them!

if it turns out that the suffer-bros really queerbaited us or that they kept mistreating and sidelining their queer characters or other important characters, etc., THEN we do have a reason to seek answers from them and to show our dissatisfaction towards the whole season by giving ALL of the episodes bad or mediocre ratings or whatever.

‼️YOUR ANGER AT SEASON 5 RIGHT NOW SHOULDN'T BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE FATE OF QUEER CHARACTERS AND QUEER STORIES IN MEDIA THOUGH‼️

(i’m also aware that bylers weren’t the only part of the fandom that were spreading this cutgate” conspiracy, but we all have to agree that there were MANY bylers who DID promote it or encourage people to downvote episode 7!)

ALRIGHT, SO WHAT DO WE DO NOW?:

to the people who promoted or participated in review bombing episode 7:

unfortunately, apologizing on tumblr for spreading 'cutgate' is not enough on it’s own right now, the damage is way to deep (and too serious) to just leave things at that. what you should try to do now is to reverse this issue BY GIVING THE EPISODE A HIGH RATING (8+) on IMDb or your HONEST rating based on what you think the episode GENUINELY deserves (spoiler: it’s definitely not just a single star!!)

to the people who didn’t participate/ bystanders:

please consider creating an account on IMDb and helping out! that would mean a lot! :D

also, if you know someone who could make an additional account (a parent, sibling, friend, partner, etc.) please consider asking them to use their account to help out too!

CONCLUSION:

keep in mind that the thing that matters the most right now concerning the ‘cutgate’ situation is that we get those ratings up to something more genuine and that we don’t let homophobes win!!

just to remind everyone that we can always downvote the entirety of season 5 (that is, after the finale gets released) if it turns out that we were queerbaited, but right now, regardless of whether you liked episode 7, we should all support Will, since that coming out scene was a really important moment for him although it might not have been perfect or according to everyone’s personal expectations.

I’m losing my mind over this whole byler shit. People saying Will coming out is unnecessary and all the review bombing. The way people are taking a bad situation and making it worse. Queer people just get shit on istg.

Okay? So are all the relationships in the show and nobody gaf about those. I never understood why LGBTQ people can’t just exist. We all bleed red and we’re just people trying to make it through day after day. But the minute there’s like a few minutes of queer focus out of hours worth of sci-fi content, there’s complaining. Maybe for once, something out here is for someone else and it doesn’t revolve around you. Crazy concept, I know.

Cutgate is sketchy asf but also why was Will more happy to see Max than El was but they’re not as close?? Like all the characters were acting in a way that just didn’t make sense I fear. Season 5 as a whole just feels very out of character. While cutgate is unrealistic it also explains a lot at the same time.

It feels like all we’re doing is getting our hopes up out here. We got our hopes up for byler in volume 2 only for literally nothing. Now we’re all hyping ourselves up for “cutgate” when we really just don’t know if it’s fact. Even if it is, will they really do anything about it? Does it really matter if we’re still making them more money? We still have 1 more episode left for good things to happen and I guess anything’s possible. But I can just see this all backfiring and everyone getting upset as if this couldn’t be seen from like miles away.
