SASAYURI IS A WOMAN!!!!!
that’s it. that’s the post
i hate to complain about these things at the risk of looking like someone incapable of accepting character criticism, but i really hate scrolling the ei hashtag on tumblr because it’s often full of people who explicitly hate her and characterize her as cold, abusive and arrogant because of scara.
it’s super upsetting to have to scroll past people who think she’s an abusive mother to the shogun puppet and talk about how she’s a horrible person and how much they hate her and want her to die. i know it’s sensitive of me but i wish people wouldn’t tag posts depicting their hatred for a character under that character’s tag.
it’s frustrating that i have to mute the entire scara tag because so many posts tagged with ei that include him are riddled with what feels like hateful revenge posts about how extremely they hate her, her fans, and everything pertaining to her by portraying her as physically and mentally abusive.
it feels like she isn’t allowed to be her own character because of the fan favorite status of a male character, they completely twist her into a morally black villain that beats children and would kill the poor sad shogun puppet if she dared rebel. she was already hated enough on kazuha’s behalf, but now we have people who aggressively despise her and have no problems calling her a nasty waifubait bitch
the reason i think it’s misogyny is specifically because furina, a female character with matching audiences to scara, does not have a swathe of fans that hate any of the other characters in her story. they don’t hate focalors, neuvillette, clorinde, the traveler,, they might critique and feel bad for her, but none of them get the sheer vitriol from her fans that ei does from scaras fans.
the story presentation is different, but not drastically enough that it would explain the night and day difference. it’s especially annoying to me, because furina’s story has far more parallels to ei’s than it does to scara’s. focalors as makoto, ei play acting as makoto for five hundred years as very few knew there were ever two archons (plus zhongli himself calling her baal, her sister’s goetic name).
neither could falter for even a moment, and both were forced into unending loneliness for the sake of the nation and their counterparts’ wishes. they have many parallels, but people put her side by side with scara while viciously hating ei. it’s super upsetting
please stop tagging your posts about how you interpret ei as a manipulative abuser (despite canon contradicting that interpretation) with her character tag. sorry if this is sensitive and reductionist, but people scroll tags to find content for their favorite characters. so many people despise her already, i just want to find fanart of a female character i both love with all my heart and heavily relate to :(
Putting under the cut because oh my god, YES YESSS. Let's say I have things to get off my chest about all of this.
First of all, YEAH. THANK YOU. Oh my fucking god, navigating this fandom as a genuine Ei fan is SO FUCKING ANNOYING. It's frustrating having her as a fave character and wanting to see more of her and only meeting either hate or genAI hypersexualization slop, the fandom flavor of misogyny AND ableism is blatant.
It's been YEARS and I have MANY OPINIONS about the ableist comments towards Ei as a whole, and it's not me "justifying her bad behavior with she's a poor meow meow", it's actually quite the opposite lmao. Her mental illnesses and disabilities (I will get there) caused immense grief to her land and the ppl around her, Miko and Scara, and that doesnt justify it, but it doesnt erase the fact she was still SEVERELY influenced by those factors and not by pure neglect or hate or anything like that. And YEAH the fact that her being disabled / mentally ill in a not "cutesy, can we romanticize it???" way is a breath of fresh air actually, and i think it means a lot as a whole.
Your comparison to Furina is VERY interesting; people dont hate on Furina like they do to Ei because Furina's flavor of mental torment CAN be "romanticized" and "cute-fied". And the fact that Furina was overall "not responsible" for being put in that position. She and Ei share the same traits, but Furina is widely seen as a "poor victim", "nothing wrong in Fontaine was her fault really" - that last is is untrue at best and infantilizing/condescending towards her at worst, bc she was STILL the archon, regardless. People will shit on Ei, a god with immense life spam and very out of touch with humanity, for being "stupid and slow and evil" for grieving multiple losses for 500yrs. But SOMEHOW, Furina was an Archon for 500yrs, but still "not responsible for the wrongs in Fontaine". Alright. And this isnt me hating on Furina btw, she had it extremely ROUGH but she was also still very flawed (which IS FINE. LET CHARACTERS BE FLAWED!!!!); it's this specific fandom double standards that makes me so mad lol
Ei on the other hand was 100% in charge and thus is "vilified" by the fandom bc of that. Also misogyny; if she was a man, she'd be a fan favorite. That is a FACT. Also dont get me STARTED with the whole "Ei is the most stupid from the Archons" / "Ei was so dumb" and other adjacent things I see. I find that.... erm. Let's say I just know people like that never truly faced REAL depression/grief in their lives.
The other thing about the ableism around her is how often I see people saying the Puppet as her fucking daughter, lmao. It GENUINELY pisses me off. Ei has THE MOST Dissociation / DID coding ive ever seen in a character in the last few years, and a surprisingly well done metaphor for that matter, only for mommy issues mf's project Ei's adjacent to a "PROTECTOR ALTER" as a fucking ABUSED DAUGHTER. Are we FOR REAL? It's one of those things that makes me question if we're even playing the same fucking game. The Puppet was created in a time of intense grief and depression, it FRONTS AS A COLD, DIRECT, RIGID PERSONALITY while Ei's true personality IS HIDDEN IN THE PLANE. And then after FIGHTING FOR 500 YEARS THE RIGID PERSONA THAT WAS NOT LETTING HER MOVE FORWARD, the Puppet INTEGRATES WITH HER. HOW in the world is this seen as "daughter" to anyone???
And the answer is simple: people read the Puppet as the "abused daughter" because they see it being the exact same thing as Scara, when it's so clearly not. Again, she's the most """"split personality"""" character ever (using that term bc that's the "trope", even if a problematic one), HOW am I the only one seeing that, lmao
Everything around her is insanely interesting and so full of details, from her blatant faults and flaws, which she has a ton, to her qualities WHICH ARE ALSO A TON. She has a strong sense of protection, even if misguided at first. She loves poetry and playing card games and sparring for fun. But she's reduced to this "purely evil villain" or (even worst), as being just a "mother". I can spend ages talking about her and her lore without even REMEMBERING Scara exists, but to the rest of the fandom, that's the only thing about her that matters and that says a lot to me. (and for the record, I dont hate him or even blame people who have Scara as their fave for disliking Ei, it's again, this blatant double standards and bad faith, misogyny/ableist riddled interpretation of her character that is so infuriating kshjdfskjdf)
ANYWAY sorry for the rant lol but it's rare to see anyone even bringing this up, and Im glad Im not the only one who thinks this way
yes yes YES!!! i have so much to add here because omg i agree across the BOARD!!!
THE ABLEISM. YES. it’s something i didn’t talk about because i still fear being labeled as sensitive but the dialogue people use really shows people’s true colors. as a chronically ill (+disabled as such) trauma survivor w/ c-ptsd, ocd n bipolar; it speaks volumes with how many people treat her like she’s broken and evil, despite being repeatedly depicted as a kind and gentle person outside of the wrack and ruin that are her trauma responses.
people are so disturbingly obsessed with “punishing” her, when the only thing she CAN do is rescind her laws and apologize with a promise to move forward as a nation with an emphasis on the dreams of her people. the adamant insistence on “punishment” feels almost… torture porn adjacent. when a female character is unpleasant to a male character, people get obsessed with the idea of harming and humiliating her as a means of “punishment”.
when a flawed female character isn’t viewed as a hapless victim, a damsel in distress, so many people feel like they are owed the right to degrade her and have male characters put hands on her. they feel SO entitled to that right that they get genuinely upset when this outcome doesn’t come to pass.
ei wasn’t forgiven by the resistance, nor does she demand that. but that of course isn’t enough, because women need to harshly pay for their actions in front of the audience.
they use the shogun, who is quite literally part of ei herself, as a scapegoat to further villainize the woman who dared harm their favorite male character.
n with furina too, i’ve noticed a pattern in which she is acceptable due to her fragile victim status as assigned by the fandom. that, and her “bratty” behavior is immediately humbled and humiliated, up until she is metaphorically stripped bare in front of a jeering crowd. that is the penance owed by unpleasant women, ESPECIALLY the disabled and traumatized. moreso even if she made mistakes that she wants to atone for.
aaa i’d add more but my brain fog is acting up.. i might get back to this later and add to this when my head is screwed on straight hehe ~ 🔮
“I'm not gonna try and encourage you. What I will say is this:
When you start doubting yourself, you have two choices - give up, or change.”
“You have to make the decision to move forward. Otherwise, no amount of consolation from other people is gonna help you.”
“So ask yourself - what do you want? To get stronger? To learn more? Whatever it is, go do it.
You won't have any regrets if you can at least say that you tried.”

every time someone characterises Ei as an abusive mother in a fanfiction who has no personality besides being cruel and hitting scaramouche for some reason a puppy gets kicked violently
*climbs on little box with megaphone in hand*
‼️‼️PERSONALLY I THINK EI WOULD BE A GOOD MOTHER POST TRAUMA RECOVERY AS SHE’S INHERENTLY A NURTURING PERSON, AND VIEWING HER AS SOMEONE STRICTLY PRAGMATIC GOES AGAINST THE CRUX OF WHAT HER CHARACTER ARC REPRESENTS: THAT HER IDEA OF ETERNITY WAS ROOTED IN EMOTION AND LACK OF REGARD FOR HER OWN HEALTH AND CLOSING HER EYES TO THE CONSEQUENCES OF WHAT TRAUMA BASED COUNTERMEASURES WOULD HAVE INTERPERSONALLY📢📢
n0va desktop live wallpaper, genshin impact 2nd anniversary
i would add that it kind of feels like dehumanization of trauma survivors to say that they are automatically broken and should not be allowed to have kids because recovery is impossible (ESPECIALLY in the case of ei, who is shown to be a very gentle and compassionate person with understanding and patience+open mindedness during her trauma recovery. plus with that nurturing temperament being baked into the core character of the mei variant formula) but i understand the perspective so it’s whatever.
btw i feel like the reading of ei as a controlling and arrogant individual who sees herself as above her people when a big part of the reason she created a puppet with an unwavering algorithm was because she is an emotionally conscious person that would inevitably not be capable of keeping up any sort of the cold indifference needed for her decision (that faltering, in her mind, would lead to the traumatic event repeating itself) is kind of a huge character misunderstanding.
this is the woman who killed herself so that her sister could rule because of her love for the people and fear of not being enough for them. the woman who destroyed her physical body and stored her consciousness within a sword inside of her new mechanical body because she quite literally could not hold steady in the face of her people’s dreams. the whole point of the aq was forcing her to see those dreams because she needed to be shaken from her trauma-driven ideals.
it’s not that she doesn’t know or care about what to do with a living being in her care, it’s that at the time of kuni’s creation she was petrified with trauma and did not have the means to recover and be back in her “right mind” enough to care for a “child”
tl;dr ei’s trauma responses, while absolutely not excuses, do not completely define her; and it isn’t misogynistic to say she wouldn’t be an abusive or neglectful mother if she goes through trauma therapy because she, as a person, is intentionally shown to be nurturing, loving, and patient.
