Let's talk about Kazuma Kaneko's Beelzebul
Kaneko Beelzebub design is not a copy of the Dictionnaire Infernal Beelzebub, rather, it is an Kaneko original design and the main inspiration comes from one of his favorite movie —the fly. (1958 and 1986)
Indeed, it is evident that skull symbol on wings originate from Dictionnaire Infernal Beelzebub. but,the only part Kaneko quoted was just the skull symbol .
the fly (1958), a great science fiction film. You can see its introduction on wiki and youtube, and this is the Megami tensei 2 (1990), Kaneko's first work after joining ATLUS,you can see that he immediately added this fly man as an NPC in the game.
the fly (1986), this film is every bit as outstanding as its predecessor. like the first installment, it tells a profoundly unforgettable tragic tale.this time, however, the Fly-Man's appearance has become even more terrifying, evolving into something resembling a colossal monster.
This is the first Kaneko Beelzebul frome Megami tensei 2 (1990).did you notice that there was a human face on the head of the fly? Now you know why, because this is a tribute to the film version. a fusion of human and fly.
and the SMT Kaneko Beelzebul from shin megami tensei 2(1994)
They all have the same big fly eyes, and Huge claws
Also, this is the biggest difference between Kaneko Beelzebub and Dictionnaire Infernal Beelzebub. Kaneko Beelzebub has thick limbs. Now you can see where these thick limbs come from:
So now you know how Kaneko designed Beelzebub. His sources of inspiration are usually more than one, this design is a fusion of Dictionnaire Infernal Beelzebub and the fly.
And the last point that is easily overlooked: the authenticity of details This Beelzebub is a huge monster, so Kaneko needs to redesign it and change its shape to make it look huge enough
This is why Kaneko can't just copy Dictionnaire Infernal Beelzebub, Because the biological characteristics of this version are no different from those of ordinary flies, it cannot provide you with "huge" details.
compare their legs. Even if you don't know their actual dimensions, these details will tell you, “The one on the left is a small animal and the one on the right is a huge animal”,is it?
This is the smallest crab creature in the world and the largest crab creature in the world. Compare their limbs,
This is a image of a giant fly by Ai But you will find it not persuasive enough.this looks more like these humans are very small rather than fly was huge. Because this fly lacks the biological characteristics of huge organisms.
but this one, you wouldn't doubt at all that it's a big guy, even though it's a fly:
This is all I want to say about Kazuma Kaneko's Beelzebul。This is not only due to a tribute to two great films, but also because you can see his pursuit of persuasive detail in this design.
Kaneko has mentioned in interviews how much he values the convincing nature of details. Yet regrettably, most fans seem to focus solely on whether 'his design aligns with mythological descriptions,' often overlooking these aspects——the convincing nature of details.and this remains one of the most consistently underappreciated elements in his work.I just hope that through my efforts, more people can notice these, thank you for watching.
