For fans who are reading this as unhealthy, co-dependent or nasty.. it is in the outer literal layers. And also Will is not presenting the entire picture, still yes it is ‘unhealthy’ if tried IRL.
But look beyond those layers - Hannibal is representative of Will’s true self which is inherently dark. To be able to embrace his true self, Will should let go of convenient excuses that hold him back. Alana, Jack are representatives of those excuses. Jack also uses Will quite ruthlessly while Jack’s own moral compass is questionable, remember the time when he was ready to let Freddie Lounds write about the Ripper and Will pointed out how he is allowing to risk innocent lives to catch the Ripper. Anyway, back to this question, since we know Hannibal didn’t kill Abigail yet, Will’s test is whether he embraces his real self in absence of excuses (Jack/Alana), rewards (Abigail), obligations that can chain him down (Margot’s baby).
And Hannibal says ‘I want the best for you’ - sums up the metaphor. The best outcome would be Will’s becoming, embracing his true instincts. It’s tough love.

Pretty interesting, Will
It's good to watch reunion of my favourite case and crew but I felt the mood was 'subvert expectations' May be the zoom virtual platform also contributed to feeling slightly underwhelmed. Anyway what are your thoughts on Bryan's s4 vision with 'broken minds', big manipulations (by Hannibal) and mind palaces. It shatters my understanding of these characters !
Underwhelming is the best description for this reunion, in my opinion! Since the team didn’t gather together like this in years, I hoped for something much more substantial.
I hated the extended MP and grand manipulation ideas. I don’t see any point in it - the major conflicts have been resolved. The plot should move forward physically now instead of throwing some more Will’s struggles and dreams at us. But @typicalher presented a brilliant take on what was said during the reunion that is tied to what Bryan said over the years. I’ll summarize it here.
So, based on Bryan’s words ever since the show ended, here is what had to be present in S4.
1) Will being behind the veil with Hannibal, firmly turning away from the ‘light’ side once and for all.
2) Will and Hannibal being in Cuba and having “adventures” as well as going after Margot and Alana together.
3) Mind Palace, hallucinations, and search for self stuff.
4) Will being out of his mind in S4 and being happy in S5.
5) Now he added that Hannibal will be manipulating Will in S4.
Our version is, Will is going to feel drunk on his newfound darkness and freedom. He was repressed for so long that now that he Became, he’ll be losing his focus and drowning in his own preferences, forgetting what they were and turning into a much more vicious monster any of us expected. He’ll be chasing the high he felt from killing Francis and failing to find it. He’ll be surrounded by blood, his past victims (hence the return of everyone dead, like Bryan mentioned), and more madness. A part of him will want to impress Hannibal, to prove that he’s a worthy partner (which is supported by Will seeking Hannibal’s approval throughout the show - the way he glances at him after biting Cordell is a good example; the way he has low self-esteem and knows Bedelia failed Hannibal’s expectations). So he’ll be acting more and more violently.
Hannibal will see that Will is losing himself in a new way. He won’t want to start a physical relationship with him (which Bryan mentioned) because he’ll be afraid that it isn't for the right reasons, that Will is too far gone to made decisions. So, he’ll feel like the best therapy would be to push Will even more and make him realize that he’s approaching their new life from the wrong angle, to make him figure out that this isn't the kind of killer he wants to be. To do this, Hannibal’s manipulation will entail them going after Alana and Margot.
Will won’t be fond of the idea but Hannibal will manipulate him into accepting it, intending it as a test that will finally make Will snap out of his state. So Will will initially help hunt them down but then he’ll realize this isn’t what he wants to do. Hence finally getting his mind back and being happy in S5 & probably having sex with Hannibal in Cuba (since Bryan kind of sounded like Will’s consent will come later) :D
This isn’t ideal, but I feel like it makes most sense based on all interviews and of course prior characterization.
wait wait wait when did will have an orgasm seeing the w*nd*go??
It’s in S2, during Will/Margot and Hannibal/Alana joined sex scene. I’ll copy a part of my description/analysis of it:
“Will tries to fantasize about Alana as he’s having sex with Margot. However, he sees the image of Wendigo near the fireplace, Wendigo who he’s used to associating with Hannibal. Two interesting things: first, Will actually sees Hannibal’s room and consequently, he sees himself in it (or he sees their rooms united). Second, he sees the Wendigo near Hannibal’s fireplace. Fireplace has many meanings, including passion, sexuality, home, family, and resurrection. It emphasizes the sexual and romantic subtext of this uniquely shot scene, where people destined to be together have sex with the wrong partners.
Will’s eyes widen and he looks in disbelief at what he sees. And then his vision begins to contract, focusing on Wendigo, on how it’s sitting and then standing up in all its dark glory. Will is having an orgasm at this very moment, imagining the Wendigo’s face very close, approaching him. Still through the misty eyes, he tries to focus on Alana again, but his gaze moves up to Wendigo above her, as if he can’t help himself. He and Hannibal reach orgasm first, with Alana and Margot following them.”
