Watched a documentary about abuse and advice one guy said to give children was, "Tell them that if someone is hurting them, to tell someone - and don't just tell one person. Tell as many people as possible, and keep telling as many people as possible until the abuse stops." and i really liked that

Bc so many ppl focus on the idea of telling A Trusted Adult, but even a well-meaning individual can fuck up and let abuse fall through the cracks or not know what to do

Whereas if a child tells LOADS of adults AND other kids, there's far less opportunity for an abuser to do damage control

Consistently telling their story and spreading it around disempowers the abuser to control and coerce the flow of information, or to utilise gaps and weaknesses in systems of reporting or welfare to isolate the child

Just really good advice. Not suprised I don't hear it more often.

I am a bit worried about Mirror Mi.

I mean, with emotions as the theme, how many dolls can they really make with that? There is not an infinite amount of words describing emotions, which could make future Mirror Mi dolls weak in concept.

Rainbow High had the advantage that there are an infinite amount of colors and color combinations to use. What is Mirror Mi gonna do?

I really hope this brand is gonna be a success. Which is the reason their emotion-concept makes me a tad worried.

I think the idea with mirror mi is that they're not so much "emotions" as they are "moods", (as in atmospheres, vibes). Think like, the "electric" air at a concert, or a "cozy" drink on a winter's night. Amora could be better described as "romantic", but the others fit that framework imo. Going forward they could add characters to represent ideas like "spooky", "natural", "sweet", "gloomy", "glamorous", "chaotic", etc.

None of my favorite characters from g1 have made it to g3 so I made some concepts.

Explanations under the cut

I guess I should say first I know nothing about fashion or makeup. So I'm sorry if those are bad.

I wanted operetta to be more similar to the phantom in the book so she's tall and skeletal. I wanted her to be completely flat chested, I don't know why it just felt right. I'm far too attached to her rockabilly aesthetic to change it so her outfits relatively similar. The red skeleton gloves are a reference to the phantom's red death costume and the chandelier earrings are a reference to her prototype. Her eyes are originally pale blue but Erik has yellow eyes so I added both and the white pupil version are to make her eyes look like they glow. And I gave her scoliosis because it's fun to give your problems to the character. But I don't have a brace and I don't know much about them so I copied the brace from Chelsea who I believe is the only barbie doll with scoliosis. I know mattel probably wouldn't make a doll who looks skeletal because she'd look malnourished and skelita still has ribcage boobs so she probably wouldn't be flat chested. She would probably look like clawdeen's body type but taller.

I've been picturing g3 abbey as muscular that might not be what they were going for but that's the body type i wanted for Kala. Kala already has some many colors and patterns that I didn't know what to do with her clothes. I added patterns to her arms but I didn't really change much on her tail. I changed her eyes from blue to black to match the eyes of giant squids. I also some tried a design where she just has tentacles instead of the regular mermaid tail with tentacles on the end. But I didn't know if it worked so I just went with the ladder on the main design. I did give her pets because i think only heath and cupid have been introduced to the g3 doll line without pets.(i could be wrong) Kala's concept design was a spider crab so that was my first idea for a pet. But then I thought it would be funny for a kraken to own a pogmy seahorse. Giant squid with tiny little seahorse. It would not be an accurate size but I like the idea of the seahorse being able to fit on her wrist.

Honey is the one I had the most trouble with, I just had too many ideas for her. I wanted her to have a lot of green and purple in her design. I think she's based on an alligator so I tried to lean into that. I have no idea if this is common but I've seen a few alligators missing limbs so I decided to add that in the design. I could not decide on her hair the one in the corner with pink was just because there's a lot of pink in g3. And I don't know if Mattel would make a doll with bubble braids but it would be cute. She has three different earring designs but I'm not sure if her doll ever had earrings I used to have her doll but I don't remember if she did. She was the only one I designed a bag for and I was going to give her a camera but I didn't want to draw one. I've never been too fond of her original outfit but i do like the tattered look of her skirt so i tried to mimic it. And her pet is an alligator snapping turtle.

Moonspell Magic looks interesting! I like the aesthetic & the overall designs, esp Claire. Just felt like the color pallettes overlap a bit too much, so I did some rough edits. Made Rae a bit warmer, Carina a deep pinkish-red to be more distinct from Rae (& cupid) & Layla more iridescent.

Something that's always fascinated me is the doll community's discourse around boy dolls. Obviously the consensus is that they don't do well and need improving, but there seems to be wildly varying opinions on what the bar for a *good* boy doll is supposed to be.

Something important to keep in mind is how much of the community's complaints are craftsmanship concerns (quality materials and fabrics, accessories, actual layered pieces), which ones are just inherent to male fashion in general (they're not gonna be as adventurous as fashions for women, especially in a playline doll), and which ones are generational (your personal tastes as a collector =/= what works for today's target market.... which is to say, CHILDREN.) These are all very different things, and too many collectors are terrible at making distinctions between them.

Some of the few playline boy dolls I see consistent praise for are Barbie Extra Ken and most of the LOL OMG boys:

Maybe I'm just really fashion-illiterate, but Heath is the only one that's underwhelming to me? Aesthetically Deuce and Clawd aren't too bad, the biggest difference between them and the "good" examples are the darker color palettes and the less intricate jewelry/accessories.

I feel like when it comes to boy dolls, companies are trying to tread a fine line between being visually interesting while also being realistic for actual IRL boys to wear. (The latter is one of my issues with Dream Besties Ken.)

Then again, even the most well-designed dolls aren't gonna magically fix the systemic issue of boy dolls underselling in general.

So yeah. I have no idea how you fix this outside of just consigning them to niche premium collectible purgatory.

Begging, pleading people to look at Fresh Dolls, which has some of the best, effortlessly styled male dolls that lives up to its names in terms of fashion, hair and face molds

Fresh dolls were definitely on the top of my mind, but when you really look at them the quality isn't that far off from Barbie Extra Ken/Monster High? Their biggest plus is probably that the styling nails both the representation and "plausible fashions guys wear IRL" aspects. Otherwise they're still a step below the MGA boys. Even the Disney ILY 4ever boys offer slightly more value for your money.

G1 Ghoulia talks & she always has. She just speaks Zombie which is a different language.

Not speaking English is not a disability and I find that assumption extremely xenophobic.

Do I like that she speaks English in G3? Not really no. But it’s bizarre she gets labeled as non-verbal for speaking Zombie when she is in-fact talking.

Edit: and before anyone tells me she is UNABLE to speak English: why? Other zombies can speak English, Slo-mo can speak English when he’s motivated, Neughthan speaks English, Moanica speaks English AND Spanish AND Zombie (she understands the Zomboys) our trilingual queen.

She IS however canonically disabled, she has mobility issues & uses a scooter when she has too.

I apologize, let me try to rephrase this.

ghoulia is fully capable of understanding English, both spoken words and writing. But she is incapable of speaking it herself. This makes zombie similar to sign language, in the sense it’s the only language she can speak. Zombie is also similar to sign language in the sense it’s a language built on need. The fact all zombies can only speak it implies that there is a disability effecting all zombies ability to make the full range of sounds other monsters can, or that all zombies have a mental impairment that prevents them from learning other languages(this is not a dis to the mentally impaired. I am a semi verbal honours student). This would make zombie a disabled languages, like sign.

The inability to speak any different languages is a disability. Someone who doesn’t know Spanish could take a Spanish class and learn to speak it. Ghoulia does not have that ability. She is able to understand other languages, but She is only able to speak zombie, making it a disability.

it meant so much to me seeing ghoulia on screen as a child. She couldn’t speak a language others did, so others learned hers. She couldn’t speak, but that didn’t make her stupid. Ghoulia was the first time I ever saw a character that couldn’t speak, but still made noise. Every other non verbal character I’d seen made no noise at all. It was always a physical disability that made them nonverbal. No one would touch mental disabilities that affected speech with a two foot pole. Ghoulia made me feel normal, that my days where I list the ability to speak were ok, and she showed me a better world, where people won’t make a fuss, and will just learn to communicate with you on the terms you are capable of.

all of that was taken away in G3. Why? I don’t know, but it means the best representation for mine and many others disability was ripped away from us, the change telling us that we aren’t normal and accepted, actually, and that we would be better off speaking words we aren’t able to.
