Presentations

As a whole for our class I think all of the projects were very successful and I enjoyed seeing what everyone had made. One of the campaigns that I thought was great and was effective was the campaign was the organic cosmetics website. Though I was not as connected to the issue as other campaigns the strategy that was used was excellent. The website created its own whole community and space for the group to grow as well. As composition of the genres go they were very well displayed on the website and were very useful to the overall piece. It was also designed excellently with a great background scheme. Another campaign that I thought that worked well was the high school concussion campaign. It did a very good job of targeting the coaches and starting to build a community around it. The use of pictures and gifs was also very effective in the tweets. I think it also did a good job getting the facts and mission of the campaign straight to the audience of the coaches. Hopefully the coaches did see the letter and will make concussions more of a priority in how they keep the players safe.

Her cosmetic campaign was executed very well especially because of her promoting done through weebly. It really gave people a way to really explore the issue. The high school concussion campaign was extremely captivating as well, in that most of us know what a serious issue it has become. Great job!

Presentation Review

I was honestly impressed with everyone’s projects. They were all unique and original and I feel like we all learned a lot from the campaigning process. In my opinion, Rebecca’s cosmetic campaign and Luis’s campaign about saving the bee’s were the most effective. I really liked the genres Rebecca utilized. Not only was everything visually appealing, but I feel like she created something that I would want to continue to keep tabs on. She provided logical information on her topic as well as ways for followers to interact and participate in creating their own natural cosmetics and cleaning products. I also like her propaganda poster resembled one that would be used by a legitimate company. She seemed to recieve good feedback from her community. I really enjoyed Luis’s campaign as well. I have been familiar with the issue of bee’s going extinct for quite some time so it was cool to hear more details about it. I thought his choice of genres was perfect for his campaign. I liked how light hearted the twitter account was while still sharing important information about bees. I thought the infographic was cute too. It matched the cute and cuddly persona we tend to associate with bumble bees. I can’t remember what kind of response he received on his campaign but I definitely would have participated in his campaign if I saw it anyone online.

I wasn’t in this class time, so i did not get to see these presentations, but the description of them is enough for me to agree with you. With how you say you want to keep tabs on the genres, that is what proves there genres were truly effective. The aesthetically appealing aspect of the project probably added a great deal to the genre, and seems that the feedback was probably evident of that.

I agree with the fact that Rebecca’s project made very good use of logos other than just explaining the issue. I loved her presentation as well. I wasn't there for Luis’s presentation, but from the sound of it I’m sure it was effective especially because you were interested in the issue beforehand.

Most effective presentation

While watching each of my peers present their communities and issues, each one had very strong points and each made me more interested in the subject at hand. If I was uneducated on one of the presentations, I became very interested and immediately learned more about the community. There was one presentation that stuck with me the most though. The presentation done today about pediatric doctors for kids with cancer really captivated me. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this career path is sadness because it deals with sick children dying everyday. If it were me treating a baby trying to save its life I don’t think I could ever recover, but her presentation revealed the pros of a field like this.

I never thought about it like this, but she made some very good points. Dealing with the loss of a patient and a child at that, can be extremely hard but it can also make you a better doctor in the long run and motivate you to become better so that you save more lives as a result. She made great use of pathos, logos, and ethos. I was drawn in from the moment she first spoke. I also admire her very much for wanting to follow in this career path since it can be very difficult most of the time.

Shatter The Silence

In our world today, the media is an extremely powerful source, capable of doing both amazing things as well as horrible things. Victims of sexual abuse can be portrayed in harmful ways through the media within TV shows such as: Game of Thrones, Special Victims Unit (SVU), HBO specials, etc. The list goes on and on. What many people don't realize is that these popular shows that we all love to watch can result in the re-victimization of victims and can in turn hurt as much as the original abuse itself. The message of this campaign is to promote awareness about slavery. The purpose of this campaign is to allow those interested to learn more about slavery and all that goes along with the history of the subject. The audience is students or those walking around campus who stumble across the poster or chalk. The mode is visual and the medium is visual as well through the poster and chalk. Some of the rhetorical appeals here are pathos and ethos. Pathos is an obvious rhetorical appeal here considering slavery evokes a lot of emotion for a lot of people. Ethos is a factor as well because of the information available through the campaign. The style and design is good, but could definitely be more attention grabbing. I don’t think it is very effective, but for some people it may be.

Viral Marketing

Viral Marketing is when a group or individual spread a form of media, usually on the internet, to reach a goal of popularity. This goal of popularity is to get more and more people exposed to the campaign rather than focusing more on the impact that it has for each person. It is an amount vs strength of ad kind of scenario. The Internet really is the best place for this kind of campaign as well because of how fast info can transfer between people. How most of these campaigns operate is by grabbing peoples attention usually through pathos or humor and cause people to want to tell their friends about what they saw. Another direction that the campaign could go on is it could be controversial to start a discussion of the ad. The times when viral marketing usually works could really be anytime but more importantly the campaign must be original enough to stand out from other ads while also being grabbing enough to hold peoples attention long enough for them to want to spread it. On the other side of it, their is no exact science to get a viral media. Sometimes it is just the random chance that decides if something goes viral.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is when a brand advertises digitally on different social media sites and websites by using different techniques like a short clip or bright worded text to capture the attention of the audience. You want to seed your campaign. To do this you want to make sure you advertise on the right websites so the audience you are trying to capture sees it. If you are advertising a recipe book put the advertisement on a food website. You could also put it on parenting websites and Facebook to try and reach mothers who are doing the cooking for their household. Also, trying to get a famous person to promote your product on twitter that your audience would follow will make your advertisement go viral. Getting Paula Dean to tweet about your recipe will make it go viral to people who are into cooking. Many advertisements go viral by giving away free things. An example was the Chipotle advertisement that was digital that gave everyone a free burrito. Many do not have newspapers and cutting out coupons are a thing of the past. BY doing this digitally Chipotle was able to attract a great deal of customers. Adding emotion to an advertisement will also help it work to become viral. Social media tools now use viral marketing and viral marketing uses social media. They both get benefits from this relationship. Twitter becomes popular with the political community as the viral market markets their campaigns. More people utilize the social media site making it highly popular and advertisements can get out to the people fast and effectively.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is known as different forms of various marketing techniques which all use social media that is already in existence in order to help in the process of increasing the awareness of the brand in order to help achieve the goal of the different marketing objectives. Viral marketing can be spread and accomplished in various ways such as: through word of mouth or internet. It is mainly a way to spread your campaign. In order for it to work properly though, there are a few things to keep in mind such as: humor, a meme, being dramatic, producing a smile and so on.

Viral marketing is a specific tactic many companies use in the goal of creating a “buzz” for the brand being campaigned for. It is actually a proven fact that viral marketing works. It has been said that the tactic of viral marketing has become known as a “virus” through the different forms of social media such as: youtube, myspace, facebook, along with many others. Social media and viral marketing have become one in the same in that they each help each other achieve the same goal: getting the word out about a certain idea or campaign.

I do not personally believe that the book is always better. For example, the Harry Potter series is such a popular and notable series in both the book and the movie. The movie, in my opinion, is so much better because everything you loved throughout each book such as: the huge spiders, the quidditch games, or Harry Potter’s lightning bolt scar. You were able to see all these things come to life on screen, making you fall even more in love with the Harry Potter series.

All of the rhetorical appeals made apparent throughout the books became even more apparent with each new movie that hit the theaters. The audience; however, I would think became larger for the on screen Harry Potter because there are always those people who hate to read or get bored too quickly and need to have a visual or audio adaptation of the series to be interested. This is what makes the movie so amazing. The images and special effects draws the audience in so quickly. Everything a little boy or little girl has been obsessing over from the first time they picked up the famous Harry Potter books, is finally here on screen that they’ve been awaiting the day to see their favorite scenes play out in theaters.

One of my very favorite movies of all time would have to Aquamarine. The characters include the main character, Aquamarine played by Sara Paxton, Claire played by Emma Roberts, and Hailey played by Jojo. The setting is in a beach town in Florida.

Within this movie, the two girls, Claire and Hailey who have been best friends for the longest time, receive the news that Hailey will be moving at the end of summer to Australia for her mother’s new job. One day, there is a major storm and while out looking at the damage, Claire falls into the local pool and sees something very mysterious while under the water....a mermaid. The mermaid, known as Aquamarine, says she is here to prove to her angry father that true love does exist and that she cannot marry the gross merman her father picked out for her. Now, Claire and Hailey have the option to help her with this task, in the return for a wish...for Hailey to stay home and not move to Australia. This is the central conflict...how will Aqua find true love in 3 days? This is where the handsome and charming Raymond comes in. Aqua and the girls are determined to have Raymond fall in love with her.

The purpose of this movie is to make the audience, mostly young women, laugh and believe in the concept of true love with a fictional story. Some of the rhetorical appeals used throughout the movie include mainly pathos, but also ethos. Pathos is the obvious choice considering the fact that the audience starts to put themselves in Hailey and Claire’s shoes and what it would be like if your best friend moved to a whole different country. I say ethos because the movie is trying to persuade the audience of true love. The mode is both visual and audio and the media is digital since it is a film. The style and design is definitely geared towards young girls or women who are interested in a gold old chick flick with cute boys and funny lines. Some of the sources of inspiration would be maybe some books about the fictional stories of mermaids and stories with the concept of true love. This movie never gets old, I can watch it on the daily and still enjoy it.

Narrative Genres

    The issue I’ve been doing so much research on and have so much passion and interest in is the issue of how victims of sexual abuse are portrayed through media whether its a popular crime show or and HBO special, you name it. Each of these different types and forms of media can take a toll on the victims and those close to them.

    The use of a narrative genre will benefit my issue in a few different ways. First off, sexual abuse is a narrative genre in itself considering the fact that in order for any information on the issue, a victim must first come forward and tell their story. One source for a narrative genre within my issue is the interview held with Detective Lori Columbino from the police department in West Palm Beach, Florida. She briefly describes the impact media can have on a victim of sexual abuse and how society can re victimize a person.

    Narrative genres are usually personal stories shared. In the community of those sexually abused, this is a major factor of my community of those sexually abused when it is all about victim’s sharing their stories and how these stories are portrayed and acted out through the use of media. There are many different forms of narrative genres within this community and I plan on utilizing those in my issue to benefit the overall project.

My issue on police brutality can be heavily benefitted by the use of narrative genres. Using the direct language of my interviewee, Master Deputy Lorraine Jordan, will establish credibility, or ethos, to my piece. I can, for example, write a short memoir about Jordan’s career with law enforcement, recreating her experiences for readers. I can also take the same idea of a memoir, but have it be from the perspective of an officer who has experienced police brutality first hand, adding to the credibility of my piece as well as creating a personal connection, which will provide pathos. The way I plan to use the narrative genre in project 3 is by having a visual element to draw attention to the issue I will be covering. Therefore, I will try to create a graphic memoir or possibly a photo essay, following a previous police brutality case. The narrative genre will also help my issue due to its sensitivity. I will be covering police brutality, but from the unpopular opinion of having to support the men and women in uniform who put their lives at risk to protect and serve our communities and our families. The narrative genre will help with the pathos I need to get people to think about the lives of the officers.

I really like the idea that you have for your Narrative genre. I believe that this could most definitely be a good idea for you last project. I was even thinking about doing a photo story/essay for my project 3 to have more of a visual perspective and draw people in. I really liked your ideas. Great job so far!

Narrative Genres

My issue; the decline of entrepreneurship, and whether this is something to worry about or not can benefit from a narrative composition by moving away from factual and statistical content, and getting personal with the reader. Narrative genres share personal stories and come first hand through an individual who went through an experience and is telling the reader about it, which could help my paper by having an entrepreneur share their experience on a personal level, something along the lines of a person who started from nothing and embraced unlimited opportunities presented, and made a success of themselves. Or the other argument telling a personal story of someone who left their job to start a business that failed, and share the effects that had on their life. Either argument is just as credible as facts and more convincing when told again on a personal level.

I agree with what you’re saying! Sometimes hearing a story from an actual person can help us relate better to the issue rather than being bombarded by research, statistics, and facts. And that could even push someone over the line to supporting or opposing your campaign.

TED Talk Analysis

    I found this video or “TED Talk” to be extremely interesting. When the speaker first began, I thought it was going to be very boring, mainly because of the topic. Then, as she proceeded to mention I would gain seven and a half minutes more of life listening to her speech, I decided to give her a chance.

    The audience for the speaker’s composition was directed towards those who aren’t too fond of video games and don’t understand their benefit to a human’s life, or those wanting to gain more minutes in life. The purpose of this speech is to persuade the audience that her game “SupperBetter” can really help you through a rough time and life and then you will gain more years of life as a result. The rhetorical appeals the speaker utilized throughout the composition were pathos, logos, and ethos. I say all three because first of all, nothing can really be persuaded without the use of ethos. She obviously used pathos because she utilized her own experience of feeling suicidal and creating her personal game to survive, “Jane the concussion slayer”, and also using those on their deathbeds.Logos is used as well because she uses logic and statistics throughout her presentation to prove her point.

    The mode of this composition is visual an audio because she is making a speech in front of an audience. The media would be multimedia including digital and face to face. Some of the genre conventions of this piece include: gaming, lifespans, etc.

   Personally, I had never heard of “TED Talks” before, but after watching this one I plan on researching much more. The speaker was incredible and did a flawless job of persuading her audience and making everything seem natural and flow.

The audience of this particular piece would be Star Wars fans or just those interested in the Star Wars series. The purpose is to showcase the Star Wars theme in a comical form and to showcase the dolls made from the series. One of the rhetorical appeals would be pathos because many fans of Star Wars have emotions attached to the popular series. The media of this composition would be digital because it is online and the mode would be visual being that it is an image being shown. Some of the genre conventions include the movie, the books, galactic theme, etc. The style and design of this composition is definitely an attention grabber being that the main characters of the series Star Wars are pictured as the Lego dolls that are so popular among our society. If I had the option to remediate this piece, I would probably throw in a meme of some sort or a quote to grab a wider or more diverse audience.

Are Kids On A One Way Path To Violence?

The purpose of this article is to reveal the fact that playing violent video games does not necessarily mean the gamer themselves will become violent as a result. When mental illnesses come into play, this can be a major factor in the violence the gamer is committing. Parental supervision is critical when violent game are present, especially if the gamer has a mental illness. The audience is for those people who have a problem with violent video games or believe they result in violence in reality, such as the shootings discussed throughout the article. Some of the rhetorical appeals used throughout the article include pathos because the emotion is derived from the shootings and deaths discussed. Ethos is also a rhetorical appealed used because much information is cited throughout the article. The media and mode that the article utilizes are : the media is paper (article) and the mode is through the book (visual). This particular article does not really have any certain style or design involved, so nothing is added as a result. If there were pictures of the games, there would be a lot more added. This certain piece could easily be adapted into a documentary that discusses the various shootings and statistics on the mental illnesses affecting the way the gaming world can work.
