Presentation Review

Everybody’s presentations were surprisingly good! They were all unique in there own way and I learned a lot form each presentation. I didn’t realize how many people in our class have been affected by childhood cancer in some way. There were two presentations today alone that touched on the subject of cancer in children. This topic hit close to home, having been affected by childhood cancer in my life. I think that both of these presentations were very effective because they both provided load of information on the subject matter such as, including a ton of statistics. The one about the “9 signs of depression” i though was extremely effective. Many people do not know that many kids, during and after treatment become very depressed. I have witnessed this first hand and i do think that this needs to be a topic that needs to raise awareness. I also think that the informative video made was also very good. It really hit you with all those pathos, because of that sad song that was playing in the background. it kind of reminded me of those sad dog commercials you see on tv.

I agree that the presentations about depression and childhood cancer were very well put together. They shined a munch needed light on this serious topic. The statistics truly showed the horrors and sadness of each condition. The  “9 signs of depression” was a very informative genre and it was visually pleasing. It would definitely capture the attention of the audience making it highly effective. I agree the video was very sad but it stuck with you making it very effective too. I also liked the digital picture portrayed childhood cancer and FSU in the video. The yellow ribbon with the FSU arrow in the background brings together our university and a cause that needs to be promoted and helped. It was put together nicely and I like how it was incorporated into the twitter’s default picture so that it would capture the attention of people on twitter getting them to follow and support this account portraying this serious cause.

Presentation Review

Everyone did a great job but I think Hudson’s project was really good. In his first genre he made an Instagram as his social media site. He used vegan hashtags which helped him draw attention to the cause and the audience and obtain followers. His Instagram was visually pleasing and he received many likes and comments. This portrays how his genre of Instagram to get veganism out to the world was effective. I really liked the videos in his Instagram because it made his account personable and people could relate to it. He also created a video which he made showing him making vegan food. The video was great quality and looks professionally made. He added in the nutritional information at the end to show that eating this way is healthy. He also made a buzz feed article which was really cool. He used pictures, videos, and gifs to capture the attention of the people looking through it. All of his genres were very creative. Buzz feed articles are very popular right now so that was a great genre to do. He stood out from the rest of the class because not many other people did Buzz feed articles. It was interesting to see how he said he might become vegan next year because of his roommate. This shows how he is truly interested and passionate in this topic. He used the class twitter to promote his project. This captured my attention even before he presented and it was cool to see his Instagram unfold. I also like his hashtag #veganbestrong because it is catchy. I think everyone did a great job.

Presentation Review

I overall enjoyed everyone’s presentations because I got to learn about communities and issues I did not know of before.  In my opinion, I think that Hudson’s presentation on being vegan was one of the most effective.  It was clearly organized with good transition into talking about each genre.  He throughly explained where he shared his information, had statistics and graphs on his e-portfolio, and showed how all of his genres worked together in a sense.  He had a clear voice and was loud enough for everyone to hear him.  Also, it seemed as though he got a good response from people within the community which definitely made his campaign seem more effective.

I agree Hudson’s presentation was very effective. He received a good amount of followers and he even said himself he got emerged in the vegan community. This was really cool because it showed he is passionate about his topic. It was not just a assignment for him but a issue he cared about. I also think his Instagram was super cool and trendy. It captured the attention of Instagram users which is shown through the amount of followers he got. Also, the Buzzfeed article was really cool. I would definitely click on that and assume someone that works in that company made it. He was loud and I could hear him from the back of the room which adds to his presentation. Everyone did a great job on their projects!

This sign and chalk work is trying to grab attention of the passerby's on campus to bring attention to their cause. They want to explain what IJM is. By drawing someone tied up with chalk, people will stop and look because it is an intense drawing with cruel history behind it. The purpose is to grab attention of the audience who are FSU Students so they can explain their organization and what they stand for and do and get them to come to the meetings and become a member themselves. They want to grow her organization by adding more members. The mode and medium are visual through a poster and chalk work that is text based. The rhetorical appeal is pathos. By drawing someone tied up you feel sympathy and want to stop and help. The style and design are text based which is organized and simple. They also have a few visuals in black and white which relates to the past and history. This is effective because it touches everyones emotions and people want to go to the meeting to stop and help them raise awareness for their cause.

Viral Marketing

Viral Marketing is the act of promoting a product, idea, or service through the use of social media, email, or other form of internet interaction. This is typically done by an individual rather than a business or company, but it can also be utilized by corporations. The goal is get the word out about whatever it is that is being promoted. In this day and age i think that viral marketing has to be one of the most effective ways to advertise something. Many people don’t have TV’s, listen to the radio, or read the newspaper but everyone has a smart phone. Additionally, almost everyone has access to some form of social media. MY 82 year old grandmother even has a Facebook. That being said, viral marketing isn’t as simple as blatantly posting something on twitter. You need to have the right approach in order to gain the attention of an audience and to keep them captivated long enough to actually listen/read your point. Your campaign needs to be easy to understand and easy to access so your audience doesn’t get bored. Its also important to pay attention to social trends in order to make sure your product is delivered in a way that will be more widely excepted. “15 of the best viral marketing campaigns” does an excellent job in proving this concept.

I have to agree that viral marketing is the new way to get out products and ideas to the public. It is such a fast and effective way of communication that everyone should viral market their brand. In my post I explained how cutting out coupons is such a task of the past, now a days coupons are all online and are even scalable at the register from your iPhone. My grandma has a Facebook too, even though she does not really know how to use it she still goes on and will view any advertisements that come up on the site. I will agree your campaign has to be trendy and entertaining so it captures the audiences attention but the most important part of it is that it needs to be able to relay its message effectively. That article you quoted was interesting because I knew each campaign they showed because each was so successful.

Blog Post #7|| Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is the process of your campaign or idea spreading through other people’s word-of-mouth or sharing. The purpose of viral marketing is to gain followers and attract people to the idea. It works by enticing people with some sort of feeling, and then keeping them interested in the topic. In the article “7 tricks to Viral Web Marketing”, Thomas Baekdal includes the seven most important things to get your idea spreading, which include: 1) Make people feel something, 2) do something unexpected, 3) do not try to make advertisements, 4) make sequels, 5) allow sharing, downloading, and embedding, 6) connect with comments, and 7) never restrict access! I believe this works when all of these tricks are implemented. After reading about the 15 best viral marketing campaigns it seemed like they were all successful because they peeked people’s interests by doing things that didn’t seem possible at the time they went viral, and by entertaining people in some kind of way that made them want to keep spreading it.

I agree that gaining followers will help any idea become successful and doing this through social media digitally is the way to go. I really liked the article you quoted because it gave me some ideas on how to gain followers for the social media site I made for the genre I am doing. I will definitely connect with comments as people visit my social media site and share their ideas. I am using Instagram. Entertaining is key. If I click on something and it’s boring I immediately exit out of it. These pieces of advice are great points for everyone in our class, who made a social media site or infographic or any thing that relates to digital marketing, to consider.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is when a brand advertises digitally on different social media sites and websites by using different techniques like a short clip or bright worded text to capture the attention of the audience. You want to seed your campaign. To do this you want to make sure you advertise on the right websites so the audience you are trying to capture sees it. If you are advertising a recipe book put the advertisement on a food website. You could also put it on parenting websites and Facebook to try and reach mothers who are doing the cooking for their household. Also, trying to get a famous person to promote your product on twitter that your audience would follow will make your advertisement go viral. Getting Paula Dean to tweet about your recipe will make it go viral to people who are into cooking. Many advertisements go viral by giving away free things. An example was the Chipotle advertisement that was digital that gave everyone a free burrito. Many do not have newspapers and cutting out coupons are a thing of the past. BY doing this digitally Chipotle was able to attract a great deal of customers. Adding emotion to an advertisement will also help it work to become viral. Social media tools now use viral marketing and viral marketing uses social media. They both get benefits from this relationship. Twitter becomes popular with the political community as the viral market markets their campaigns. More people utilize the social media site making it highly popular and advertisements can get out to the people fast and effectively.

I really liked the color-coordinated chart that informs the viewers of which veggies are in season. I never know when certain veggies are in season and think that it would be so helpful when going to the super market. I would love to know this information so that I could specifically buy those foods since the cost would be cheaper. The purpose is to inform the audience of which veggies are in season. It can also inform people that like to garden when deciding what to grow at what time of the month. The rhetorical appeal this poster contains is ethos since it is put together color coordinated and very factual it makes the audience feel like this is a credible source and that the information is correct. The style and design are a visual poster that is color coordinated which makes it easy for the viewers to see and understand. The color and simpleness also grabs the attention of the audience. I learned that you want to get your information out in a neat, easy to read manner. Utilizing color-coordination is a great way to do this because you add life to your visual while organizing it in a way that benefits how the information is perceived.

The story book of Rapunzel was not better than the movie. In the movie “Tangled” they had intense graphics that made it exciting to watch. The movie had a different plot line. The motion picture changed the storyline to make the girl independent. She did not need a man to save her like in other disney princess movies. The book I read as a child was good but the princess was trapped up in the tower and her only escape to obtain freedom is when a prince came to rescue her. I like how she did not need rescuing. She was strong and could stick up for herself especially if she had her frying pan handy. The movie had really cool animations that made the characters look cartoony but real at the same time. When I watched this movie I watched it with my two year old cousin. She was captured by the movie and sat for the whole thing but would not sit for two pages of the book.

I like the tv show “Friends”. The main characters are Chandler, Monica, Joey, Ross, Rachel, and Feebie. The setting takes place in New York City in the 90′s. They hang out in their apartments and a coffee house. In the plot the characters go through different life events from getting married to having kids but they do it together with this group of friends by their side. The main conflict usually have to do with different fights and conflicts the friends encounter with each other. It could be as big as a girl two friends are fighting over or as little as who gets the remote. The purpose of the story is to capture the audience and make them be able to relate their friend circle to the ones on the show. The characters go through life just like normal people so the audience can relate to them. The audience is anyone that likes funny television shows.In the show they use pathos to capture the emotions of the audience. When characters get married happiness is portrayed so the audience is happy for the people in the show. This is a visual television show but I am watching it on netflix on my computer so it could be said that it is digital over the internet. The genre is comedy as it is funny and many jokes are scattered throughout. The style is informal, and casual, and the design is in the 90′s so the characters are wearing outdated clothes, they have old flip phones, and some jokes they say relate to how people lived in the 90′s. The inspiration they used was just everyday life in society. They have different aspects of society in the show including a lesbian couple, a segregate mother, and a teen mom. These examples show how they are relating to what is going on in society at the time.

Narrative Genres

Narrative genres are a way to tell a story or to share an experience. They are a more personal way to get a point across and include the authors thoughts and opinions. For my issue, the effects tourism has on certain regions and countries within the hospitality industry, i can utilize personal accounts of how the people living in these places have been effected. I could also use articles that explain how tourism has strongly impacted a country, boosting both there economy as well as the upkeep of the surrounding environment. My issue is a little bit difficult to turn in to a narrative. It goes more off statistics and numerical information rather than individual stories or feedback from a group. My goal is the encourage the act of tourism around the world, so perhaps a narrative from a community that benefited from it would be the best form.

I feel like your topic is perfect for a narrative genre. Telling a story of someones personal account will make the audience feel for these people. It will pull on their heart strings and catch their emotions which is using pathos in rhetorical appeals. I think using an article would give your narrative dimension as long as it is credible. Since your issue is mainly based off statistics it would be interesting to view the topic from a different perspective. Mainly someone that lived in this area once tourism picked up and how it affected them. Since you want to encourage tourism you could discuss how it benefitted the people living in this area as their economy probably boosted. This is a really interesting topic and would make a great narrative to portray the effects of tourism on natives.

Blog Post #6|| Narrative Genres

Narrative genres are used to share stories and experiences. My issue, compounding medication for animals, could benefit from the use of a narrative genre by being able to connect experiences with my audience. On a Facebook post or through a YouTube video I could tell the story of a sick animal whose only option of treatment would be compounded medication and that sick animal could very well be Johnny’s new puppy. By telling this story, I’m connecting to my audience of pet owners and Veterinarians, so that they will take an interest in my campaign. But not only am I trying to get them interested, but I’m also trying to persuade them to join me. I want them to also agree that compounded medication is an acceptable form of treatment.

I agree greatly that narratives can help connect the audience to a certain issue. They can relate to the story which will help get them on your side of the argument. By telling a story of a sick puppy you are using pathos which will grab the emotions of the audience. They will feel sympathy for the puppy and Johnny and agree that compounded medication should be used to treat the puppy since it is the only way the puppy will survive. They will get attached to the animal and surely be on your side of the argument. You are truly connecting to pet owners and Veterinarians but I also think you are connecting to anyone that has a love of animals. This video or post would truly make me agree with you on the issue of compounded medication. If it would save a puppies life I would agree that it is an acceptable form of treatment in this situation.

Blog Post 6, Narrative Genres

My issue can benefit from a narrative genre composition because it will help teach the audience a lesson. Since I am trying to persuade the audience to agree that being vegan is good for a person’s health portraying a story that backs up my argument will greatly help. I can share a narrative with the readers about a person who benefitted greatly by becoming vegan. This will entertain them while also having a moral to the story instructing them on the great outcomes of this lifestyle. The narrative will also help the readers relate to the person in this story going through this change. They will then think that if this person can do it and change their lifestyle drastically, they can also become a vegan. The narrative will include all three forms of rhetorical appeals. I want it to be credible, logical, and have emotions through out so the audience can relate to the person in the story. I am thinking about using the story in the documentary “Vegucated”. Since the three people become vegan and are all fairly young I will narrate in a casual, young, and informal style. I was also introduced to literacy narratives in the bbg book. I am considering writing a memoir/literacy narrative and considering eating like a vegan for a week and then discussing the experience and how I felt. I don’t know if that will be allowed but will see which one works the best. I really think a story will help capture my audience’s attention and explain my side of the argument helping the audience be persuaded to agree that veganism is a healthy lifestyle.

Jane McGonigal did a ted talk and explained how someone could increase their lifespan. She related this to video games and taught the physical, mental, emotional, and social resilience. The purpose of this talk was to touch the audience’s lives, teaching them to take a break in life and do these activities that take only 7 minutes but will increase their life by 10 years if done for many years. This is an informative piece of work. The audience is anyone that wants to improve their lifespan but is mostly made up of people fighting illnesses like cancers and depression to boost their mood and lifespan. Jane used pathos when she explained her own depression battle. The audience could relate to her and her disease if they had sealed with depression before or know someone who has. By her having this life experience she became more credible in this topic too. She used ethos when giving quotes from studies making her extra credible. The media and mode is face-to-face and shown through Jane’s voice as she teaches and explains the ways to increase their lifespan. She explains activities like snapping your fingers for 50 times and shaking a neighbors hand. This helps someone control their will power and obtain social interaction. The presentation can also be seen online in an audio version through a video. The style and design are funny and interactive to grab the audience’s attention. I liked this presentation since it was very interesting and informative.

The rhetorical situation is that one Star Wars lego loves another and they are both human but the girl loves the animal Star Wars lego. The audience is people who like legos and Star Wars. The purpose of this ad is to grasp peoples attention in a comical way and get them to buy legos. This ad is using pathos because the boy lego is sad and everyone feels bad for him since he was bringing the girl flowers but she already is with another male. People can relate and give sympathy. The media and mode is a visual add that could be featured in a magazine or poster. This is a persuasive ad since the company is trying to get the consumers to buy legos. The style and design is simple with just a red plain background but this captures the attention of the audience since red is a bright color. The color of red can also be connected to love and heartbreak which is shown through the legos. By showing the legos portraying a story through this picture the media sends the message to the audience that you can use legos to tell stories. They are not just for building things but also for being creative and coming up with different situations. If i had to change it I would put a line on the bottom that includes text to capture the attention of the audience. The line would stick in their heads. It could be something like “What happens next?” or “Create life with legos!”

Danone/Evian & Havas Worldwide Ad

Purpose: To persuade consumers to buy water from Evian.

Audience: Since the ad appears in a magazine, people who read magazines or look online as well as people who want health benefits from drinking water.

Rhetorical appeals: Pathos and ethos. The ad appeals to pathos by associating Evian water to the mountain landscape in the background and the model laying in the snow. Perhaps by drinking this water, they could look like the model by “detoxifying”. The ad appeals to ethos by presenting the bottle of Evian water at the bottom of the page.

Media/Mode: Print and digital/ Written and visual

The style and design add to the ad’s purpose because the emphasis of visuals and the choice of colors used draws great attention to the water, making consumers want to buy Evian water.

This piece could be adapted into a commercial so that it reaches consumers watching TV. Instead of the still photograph, maybe it could show the model walking across the mountains drinking a bottle of Evian water, while a voice over could be selling the health benefits of drinking this water.

Since this ad is trying to persuade the audience it gives it more dimension. The people reading this magazine will see this ad and if it is effective they will start buying water from Evian. I agree that the mountain landscaping on the Evian water bottle does make the water look more appealing. This visual makes it look fresh and natural which persuades the consumers to buy it. The model grabs the attention of the audience since she is not wearing that much clothes and is lying in snow which is usually not seen because snow is very cold and most would be fully clothed when in its presence. Since the model is pretty, many will associate her with the water and therefore buy the water. The model making a snow angel relates the water to fun and happiness which can be looked at pathos in the rhetorical appeal category. The color of white used in the style and design do draw attention to the ad helping it effectively reach its goal. The picture is pretty cool so the audience would surely take a second glance at it. I like your idea of a commercial. The model could even be the one saying the words printed in the magazine, “Detox with Evian”.
