shaunahat scene analysis: s3ep1, part 2
(for s3e1 part 1, click here)
The first time in season 3 where Shauna and Melissa actually talk to each other is when Shauna is preparing the meat for their dinner. Since this is a lot of work, she requested the help of Melissa, who happens to be nearby. I say “requested” rather than “asked” because I doubt Shauna was asking. There was no “please”, so it feels like Shauna took for granted that Melissa would help. After all, she was just sitting there and seemingly doing nothing. The least she could do was lend a hand.
Why was Melissa sitting there? Given she was on the losing team and therefore, meant to “serve” the winners for the day, I think she was more specifically serving Gen (and by extension, Mari, also on the winning team and hanging out with Gen). When Van declared that the losers would serve the winners, Gen looked at Melissa in a way that made it clear that she expected her best friend to be her servant for the day.
So I assume Melissa was simply waiting to be given an order. So she had to stay close to Gen, but she also chose to sit nearby Shauna. Melissa has a crush on Shauna, so it makes sense she’d want to be close to her. We also see her steal a glance at Shauna, even before the latter requested her assistance. Two birds, one stone. She gets to be close to her crush while playing servant to Gen (and let’s be real, look at her and Mari sunbathe).
Melissa didn’t say anything and simply helped Shauna. I think she was too surprised and nervous that her crush talked to her to be able to say anything. It was possibly the first time Shauna “noticed” her, even though she only did so because Melissa was conveniently nearby, not because it was her specifically. But to Melissa, it probably meant a lot that Shauna asked for her help. It was her chance to be helpful to her crush. So she didn’t hesitate and started helping her carry the meat.
But, turns out, Melissa wasn’t the most helpful. When Shauna tossed a piece of meat at her, Melissa failed to catch it on time, resulting in the meat falling to the ground (with Melissa trying to instinctively catch it with her foot). This caused Mari to tease her, and even Gen laughed about it. Now, according to Jenna Burgess, the reason why Melissa dropped the meat is because she was distracted by Mari and Gen sunbathing in their bras. This was even in the script. Whether or not Mari and Gen were aware that Melissa was ogling them is up to debate, but I like to think that might be why Mari teased her.
I do find it interesting how Shauna did not get mad at Melissa for dropping the meat. At this point in the show, Shauna is easy to upset. And it’d be reasonable for her to be upset at someone dropping the meat she worked on. But instead, Shauna’s attention was on Mari. And I think it’s because Shauna is indifferent to Melissa, while she dislikes Mari. So she would not have wanted to side with Mari, and she would not want to give her the satisfaction of agreeing with her. She even looked bothered by how Mari mocked Melissa. I don’t think she was upset at Mari on Melissa’s behalf, but more that she took Mari’s teasing as a mockery against her. Melissa was helping her, she dropped the meat because Shauna tossed it at her. So in a way, Mari is indirectly also making fun of Shauna (or at least, it’s how she perceives it). I think it’s in character for Shauna, who is quick to assume personal offense against her.
Then Mari decided to add insult to injury, demanding to be served. Melissa is quick to go along with her request, because as I assumed before, that was why she was staying close to Mari and Gen: to be their servant. But before Melissa could proceed with that request, Shauna suddenly stopped her. Once again, I don’t think Shauna wanted to give Mari any kind of satisfaction. And also, she requested Melissa’s assistance first, so this is once again something Shauna could take as a personal offense. Mari can ask anyone on the losing team, so why pick the one person who is currently helping Shauna? It makes sense Shauna would perceive this as a way to spite her. Also, Mari technically asked both of them, when they are busy doing something that is arguably more important (preparing dinner). She views it as disrespectful for Mari to ask them, so for Melissa to comply, it would validate that disrespect as well as validate Mari’s behavior. Something Shauna would oppose, hence why she told Melissa to not go.
As for Melissa, she is equally quick to obey Shauna’s command than she initially was to answer Mari’s request. We do know Melissa is attracted to Mari, but the one she has feelings for is Shauna. So it makes sense she’d rather obey Shauna over Mari, whom she is not particularly close to (at least, according to Jenna, Melissa and Mari weren’t close friends). Also, having her crush specifically requesting her to not go (indirectly, asking her to stay with her instead) would not leave Melissa indifferent. Any crumbs of interaction she can get with Shauna is worth it.
Then Shauna made a rather dark claim about how they should have eaten Mari first. Maybe it was a slip up, maybe she felt a bit too comfortable to say her thoughts out loud to Melissa because they were both being mocked by Mari. Or perhaps it’s simply because Shauna doesn’t care anymore and will say whatever she really thinks without much concern for how others will react.
At first, Melissa does look taken aback and even shocked by what Shauna had just said. Which is reasonable, given what they went through. Most of them probably would rather avoid mentioning their past cannibalistic acts, as they no longer partake in this. So this was probably not something Melissa expected to hear, even from Shauna. Shauna is basically admitting to her that she wished Mari would have died and that they had eaten her. And Melissa, despite not being close to Mari, probably doesn’t feel that way. She was even ogling at Mari not even a minute ago.
Then Shauna stared at Melissa, probably noticing how shocked she was. It almost looked like she was challenging her to say anything. She was probably expecting Melissa to stay quiet or disagree with her, this is what Shauna came to expect from her fellow teammates. But much to her surprise, Melissa did neither of those. Despite her initial shock, Melissa quickly bounced back. She finally had the opportunity to talk to Shauna, and she wanted to make a good first impression and show that she was on her “side”.
So Melissa replied with a disparaging joke about Mari, about her being so dumb she allegedly chipped a tooth on her vibrator. Melissa also specifies that this is something she heard, so this might be a joke she heard from someone else. I think the joke implies that Mari is either too dumb to use a vibrator therefore, put it in her mouth instead, or that she used her vibrator to practice giving oral and was too dumb to turn it off. I like to think Melissa might not have understood the full implication of this joke but since she heard someone else say that as a joke, she hoped Shauna would understand it and find it funny. Regardless, the intent was to denigrate Mari in hope that it would please Shauna, and use Shauna’s dislike of Mari to make a good impression.
I don’t think Shauna necessarily found the joke funny (or cared that much about the joke itself), what actually seemed to have struck her is that Melissa reacted positively to her dark comment. And it was not something she was expecting. She is used to people viewing her in a negative light, most people would have either avoided replying to her remark or would have told her it was inappropriate to say. But not Melissa, who not only didn’t reprimanded her, but also went out of her way to “agree” by making fun of Mari. It was unexpected, and dare I say, not “boring”.
And then Shauna reacts by commenting about how Melissa actually has a “personality” after all. Not quite a compliment, since it demonstrates that until now, Shauna didn’t really notice Melissa nor that she particularly stood out. But judging by Melissa’s reaction, she definitely took it as a compliment and was pleased by it. Because to her, it meant Shauna finally noticed her. Which is something she would hope for from her crush. It can also be seen as a meta-joke, since up until now, Melissa as a character didn’t have much of a personality until season 3. So Shauna’s reaction mirrors the viewers, in a way. But if we stay strictly in universe, then it speaks on how Melissa is someone Shauna never paid attention to, and how Melissa herself might have been kind of a wallflower.
I would say that this interaction definitely made Shauna be, at the very least, intrigued or curious about Melissa. Because of how unexpected her reply was, and different from how she is used to being treated by others. Shauna even kept staring at Melissa for a few seconds, until they were interrupted by Akilah’s arrival. This does remind me of that scene in season 1, episode 3, when they are at the beach and after seeing Travis shirtless, Mari said “wait, is Travis… hot?”. I like to think Shauna had a similar thought when she took the time to actually look at Melissa, after finally noticing she does, indeed, have a personality.
As mentioned though, they get interrupted by Akilah. Part of me can’t help but wonder if their discussion would have gone further if they were interrupted, but that’s a hypothetical for another time. Akilah walked by to give a “gift” to Shauna for the ceremony, which looked like a makeshifted crown. Once Shauna learned the reason why Akilah is giving her that (because she was “its mother”) she immediately rejected the gift. I do think Akilah’s intentions were good, but at the same time, very insensitive (which I don’t think she realized). Shauna’s baby have been turned into idols of worship for Lottie’s Wilderness cult, her loss and grief being appropriated by others. And this gift was once again a reminder that Shauna’s baby didn’t only belong to her, and how she wasn’t allowed to simply grieve her dead child. She clearly stated to Akilah that she didn’t want it, but Akilah insisted and even tried to put the crown on Shauna’s head without her approval. I do think Akilah genuinely thought it was a good thing, but her insistence and downright disrespecting Shauna’s boundary were wrong. This resulted in Shauna's (rightfully, in my opinion) aggressive reaction, by slapping Akilah’s hand away and making the crown drop to the ground.
Melissa did witness this. I’m not sure to what extent she understood why Shauna was upset, but she definitely realized that Akilah’s “gift” made her uncomfortable. So, once again, in her desire to show a good impression and signal to Shauna that she was on her side, she decided to show her support for Shauna by “““accidentally””” step on the crown. In a way that would indicate to Shauna that she, too, didn’t like that gift, but also, in a way that would give her plausible deniability if Akilah complained that she did it on purpose. There’s nothing that suggests Melissa had anything against Akilah per se, so she really only did that for Shauna’s sake. She probably didn’t fully realize how hurtful the “gift” felt to Shauna, but she at least noticed that Shauna didn’t like it. That this wasn’t the kind of gift Shauna liked to receive.
And it does seem that Shauna noticed what Melissa did. I don’t think she understood why exactly Melissa stepped on the crown, but I do think she noticed it was not an accident. So I think part of her might have wondered why Melissa would have done that, and I don’t think she was capable of coming to a conclusion. After all, she is unaware that Melissa has a crush on her, and this isn’t something Shauna would even think about. So her behavior probably just confused her, as she stared at Melissa, and continued to do so for a second as she walked away. Then, once both Melissa and Akilah are gone, Shauna resumes what she was doing, which is preparing dinner.
If this was the only interaction Shauna ever had with Melissa, she probably would have forgotten about her since she isn’t in the right headspace to care about people. But we know it won’t be. This marks her first meaningful interaction with Melissa, and in which the latter showed her that she could be helpful, actually did have a personality and also took her side twice. So I would call that a “good first impression” by Shauna’s standard, and perhaps it did help her open up to Melissa later on, enough to start a relationship with her. Perhaps if it wasn’t for this “positive” interaction between them, their next major interaction wouldn’t have ended well.
As for Melissa, this interaction did give her some insight. That Shauna was upset at a gift to her regarding her baby, and maybe gave her the idea to give something to her baby instead, to acknowledge Shauna’s grief instead of making it a symbol (hence the flowers on her baby’s grave). But that will be discussed further in another scene analysis. For Melissa, this interaction showed her that she could talk to Shauna, and maybe give her a sliver of hope they could perhaps get along. I don’t think she was planning on confessing her feelings to her anytime soon, but this was a start.
Overall, this scene shows that Melissa is willing to be mean to people who didn’t particularly wrong her or even have an issue with (here, Mari and Akilah), for the sake of pleasing Shauna, as well as her early devotion to her. Both will be explored further in the story as their relationship continues to evolve.

shaunahat scene analysis: s3ep1, part 1
The "capture the bone" game is technically the first “interaction” between Shauna and Melissa in s3. They both happened to be on the same team. Said interaction didn’t involve words, though. After Shauna had tackled Mari to the ground and bitten her hand, members of each respective team got involved to separate them. And the two people who grabbed Shauna to pull her away from Mari were Taissa and none other than Melissa. We don’t really see it well in the episode itself, with the way it was edited, but Melissa was helping Taissa restrain Shauna.
We see it better in one of the stills; she is tightly gripping one of Shauna’s arms to keep her from going after Mari. (also, Mel, did you really need to rub your leg against Shauna's thigh like that?)
Since it wasn’t clear that Melissa helped restrain Shauna, with the way it was edited, I think this scene is often overlooked when it comes to analyzing shaunahat. What does it tell us about their (future) dynamic? Well, for starters, it shows that, despite having a crush on Shauna, Melissa still intervened when she was attacking Mari. It does lend a bit more credibility to Melissa’s later claim that she “isn’t scared” of Shauna. Remember, last time someone restrained Shauna (Van), the latter reacted by biting Van. So it does take a bit of courage to restrain Shauna. The fact that the other person who is restraining Shauna is Taissa, someone who is not afraid of Shauna, also mirrors that.
It’s also possible, given they didn’t see Shauna bite Mari (they only heard a girl screaming), that Melissa’s instinct was to pull Shauna away in case she was the one who was getting hurt. I don't think Melissa could see Shauna biting Mari from that angle, so she probably didn't know Shauna did that until Mari said so. It could be that she simply didn’t want the situation to escalate, and for Shauna to get into trouble because of that.
There is also the possibility that this was an excuse for Melissa to simply touch Shauna, this did provide a good opportunity for her to do so. (maybe she wanted Shauna to bite her too, who knows)
I think, regardless of why Melissa decided to intervene, it shows that she can be bold, since not everyone would have risked holding back Shauna. That is in character for Melissa, who, despite not being the bravest character, has shown multiple times in the show that she could be bold, especially regarding Shauna. So in a way, this scene does set up one of the core keys that led to the development of shaunahat, which is, Melissa’s boldness when it comes to Shauna.
(Yes, I do intend to do a scene analysis for each shaunahat moment in s3. If you are interested in more of my commentary on this ship, feel free to check out my extensive shaunahat analysis.)

Extrajackets - season 1, episode 10
(For the main post, click here)
And we finally reached the last episode of this season. Before I start going through the episode, let's revisit the remaining survivors:
Yep, that's right. I decided that there are now 18 survivors. Who died, you may ask? Well, I decided that from now on, "Not Melissa" had died offscreen. Since pro-Melissa and Not Melissa "merged" into Now Melissa in the previous episode, and Melissa is known to survive, it makes sense for me to consider Not Melissa as dead now, since she isn't seen in this episode. Neither is proto-Melissa, but as I said, Melissa will be in s2. So not dead, just... absent. Maybe she got too high and got lost in the woods during this episode, who knows?
So, with that out of the way, let's jump straight in s1ep10!
Meet the Extrajackets in s1!
There are actually 24 survivors shown in Yellowjackets s1, 11 being extras (the last two rows, minus Mari). Some of these extras become actual characters in later seasons (mainly, Gen and Melissa). I'll go one by one through each of these extras:
