January 5: The Best Content Found This Week
Here's the best stuff I found on the Internet this week around technology, leadership, psychology, and productivity:
An In-Depth Interview with Jeff Bezos
A captivating (and rare) in-depth media interview with Jeff Bezos. His answers (particularly to the tough questions) hint at the leadership mentality that has driven the success of Amazon over the years.
The World Is Not Falling Apart
Is it possible that the world has never been more peaceful for humans as it is today? An interesting read on the perils of American journalism and being fooled by randomness.
The Paradox of Choice (10 Years Later)
Fewer choices = less frequent decision-making paralysis. The “Paradox of Choice” theory has been around for a while, but it’s a good read about the concept’s progression. This read also reminded me of an old Harvard Business Review article that has stuck with me over the years—I highly recommend the read: Why Smart People Underperform
What Happened When Marissa Mayer Tried to be Steve Jobs
A long, but interesting read. I couldn’t help but think about the challenging task of turning Yahoo! around. I'm not sure whether this perceived failure is due more to Mayer’s leadership or the potential reality that Yahoo! was too big a ship to turn in any meaningful direction, but it will be an interesting story to follow in 2015.
The Secret to the Uber Economy is Wealth Inequality
Well, 2014 sure was the year of hating on Uber. This article provides an interesting (though not backed with strong data) theory about how Uber’s growth is fueled by wealth inequality, contrary to what most of us think about Uber and its competitors (that it evens out wealth distribution).
The 20 Best Productivity Apps of 2014
Couldn’t send the first content round-up of the year without a productivity article. I bet everyone will find at least one app that could be useful to them on this list.
2014, According to Fred Wilson
Wilson does a great job (as always) of distilling those “feelings” we all get about the state of technology and the Internet.
