Repost from @thebusinessoffreelancemakeup • 🎵 TALE AS OLD AS TIIIIIME... 🎵 ...You open your inbox to an email about a job... all sounds great until you get the dreaded line, “we have no budget but this will be a great experience...” “I can’t pay my bills with experience!” you yell into your laptop screen, and you’d be absolutely right. However in creative jobs, sometimes the very nature of them means you will occasionally be asked to work for no fee. This will happen at every level of your career, it’s not just a newbie thing. So the next time it does, bear our handy Checklist in mind... YOU be the judge of whether it is worth it for the “experience” or “exposure” (those overused buzzwords🙄). Sometimes a job will provide more than one of these things - for instance I once shot an editorial in the deserts of Abu Dhabi at sunrise. For no fee. But I got great *IMAGES*, I worked with a photographer and stylist I’d long admired, so great *CONTACTS*, I got to *EXPERIENCE* something incredible by visiting the sand dunes at dawn and received *PAYMENT IN KIND* with the trip and accommodation. That may be an extreme example, but each test or editorial shot for no fee, is for “payment” in portfolio images - as long as the photographer and model etc are of a good standard and the moodboard looks great. I’ve gone to Glastonbury for free in exchange for makeup. I’ve been paid in accessories from a brand I loved, to way more than the value of a day rate. I’ve shot celebrities for free for independant magazines in order to meet their team, then gone on to paid work with them. Every job is different, and there are plenty of times when you should absolutely say no to a freebie. I’d never suggest you should be taken advantage of, and free work should be the minority of what you do. But the next time one of those opportunities pops up, have this post saved and refer back to it.
