Matt x Mello domestic fic
Right, so after I wrote my hc post I started writing this not really knowing where it was going. Then yesterday, I saw @mello-dramatics ask response about Matt buying Mello oversized teddy bears and I literally couldn't think of anything else. So enjoy this nonsense I guess 😂 This is my first time writing a fic so I hope it's not completely terrible.
Mello heard the door to the apartment open as he was nearly finished reading through an article on his laptop. He listened to the familiar sounds of Matt shuffling through the door as he slowly made his way into the kitchen.
"Hey, 'm back." Matt mumbled, pecking him on the cheek as he settled in the chair beside him. Still focused on his laptop, Mello knocked their knees together under the table to return the greeting. Matt couldn't have been gone for more than an hour, but he always made it a point to greet him after they had been apart. He was used to Mello being immersed in his work and opted to put the groceries away while he waited for the blond to finish his reading.
As he shut the fridge door, Mello looked up from his computer and stretched. "Hey, did you remember to get more laundry detergent?" Matt nodded and motioned to where it was resting on the counter before moving to sit next to him again. Mello slung an arm around his shoulder as he settled into the blonde's space. Matt spared a glance at his laptop, trying to decipher what he had been working on before immediately losing interest and resting his head on Mello's shoulder.
"The supermarket was crowded as fuck, some lady body checked me to get to the frozen peas." Mello snorted and tugged at a loose strand of red hair.
"You're the one that decided to go at 2pm on a Sunday, you should've prepared yourself for the hoards of soccer moms."
"I was prepared. I expected milfs not linebacker Karens."
"Mh, guess she left the Christian benevolence at church this morning."
"Well next time you're coming with me, I like seeing you scare all the housewives away." At that Mello smiled and began shutting off his computer. Matt kissed his cheek again and started to get up.
"I gotcha something." Mello raised an eyebrow and extended his hand, expectantly waiting for his chocolate.
"Nah man, it's in the living room." Confused, Mello got up and followed Matt into the next room.
Sitting on the small table by the door was the ugliest teddy bear he had ever seen. The stuffed toy was nearly two feet tall with lumpy limbs and an oversized head. It's fuzzy fur was a hideously bright shade of purple and it was adorned in a shiny green rain jacket and matching boots. Mello stared blankly into its soulless black marble eyes before looking at Matt. His expression was unreadable under the orange goggles as he waited for Mello to react. Mello squinted at him and then back at the bear before clearing his throat.
"Isn't it cool? I saw it when I was passing by the toy store and had to get it. It reminded me of you." Matt was beaming and gave the bear a pat on the head.
"It...reminded you...of me?" Mello looked at the bear wearily and tried not to be offended. He was still trying to determine if Matt was pranking him or not. It wasn't uncommon for the redhead to buy him random gifts while he was out, this wasn't even the first teddy bear he had received, but Matt usually brought him things that he was guaranteed to like. This thing was atrocious and Matt's giddiness seemed completely genuine, Mello was unsure of how to proceed.
Matt must have picked up on his hesitancy because his hand made its way to rub the back of his neck nervously.
"Heh, um. Yeah the jacket, and the boots, it's kinda your style dude." Mello could not control the muscles in his mouth quick enough to prevent his frown from deepening. He couldn't recall ever owning anything green in his entire life, let alone anything close to resembling the shoddy rubber material that covered the bear. Sensing Matt's disappointment, he cleared his throat again and turned to his boyfriend.
"Thanks Matt, it was really sweet of you to think of me. The bear is very nice." Mello hoped that Matt would fall for the fake sincerity, it was all he could muster.
"You hate it." Right, Matt wasn't exactly stupid. Mello decided it was easiest to be honest, as he couldn't for the life of him imagine keeping this monstrosity, and for as long as he'd known him, he had never been able to get away with lying to Matt.
"Well...I just. It's. Matt, I'm sorry but it's hideous."
"Wh- hideous? It's a teddy bear, it's cute! Teddy bears can't be ugly!"
"Are you kidding? This thing should have never been made in the first place, not even a child could love it!"
"Jeez Mel, way to get all upity about a stuffed animal. Sorry it's not to your liking your majesty, it won't happen again seeing as this is the last time I'm getting you something out of the kindness of my heart."
"Oh come on, you've got to be pranking me. You seriously think this thing looks like me?"
"Why would I be pranking you? Where's the prank? It's just a cute brown bear with a leather jacket. You wear leather everyday, what's not clicking Einstein?" Mello blinked and frowned again looking at the bear.
"...you think this is a brown bear?"
"Well yeah, I'm looking at it aren't I- hey!" Matt scrunched his eyes shut as Mello yanked the goggles off his face.
"Look again, asshole." Matt shot him a dirty look as he rubbed his eyes and adjusted to the bright room.
"C'mon man, you know I don't lik- oh shit, that thing is hideous." Mello burst out laughing at the look of horror on Matt's face. "Dude, I carried that thing for five blocks. So many people saw me holding it, what the fuck." Mello cackled with delight at the thought of Matt lugging the ugly bear around the streets of LA. "Man, these goggles suck. I said it looked like you and everything." Once Mello's laughter eventually subsided to breathy giggles, he moved to stand next to Matt and knocked their shoulders together.
"Right, well I was trying not to take it personally. Being compared to that thing made me want to set myself on fire, again." Matt made a face at the comment and turned to him.
"Babe, I promise, from the bottom of my heart, you and that bear share zero resemblance. I would dump you like a ton of bricks if you ever came home wearing a stupid outfit like that." Matt dodged just in time to lessen the blow of the smack to his shoulder. Mello took the opportunity to hold Matt's goggles in front of his face.
"Hmm, okay I can see where you were coming from. The bear is a lot less hideous through these lenses."
"But from now on I'm making it a rule that you are not allowed to buy anything without actually looking at it. With your eyes, not those shitty lenses. If they can make this thing look good, I don't want to know what kind of garbage you'll bring home next."
"Damn, alright fair point."
"Please tell me it wasn't expensive."
"Dude, it was like 18 bucks, I feel like I got ripped off." Mello giggled again.
"Only you would spend that much on actual trash. Wave goodbye to your money, I'm throwing it in the alley."
"Wait, don't throw it out!"
"You don't seriously want to keep it here do you?"
"Well no, but it doesn't seem right to throw it away."
"Matt, I cannot physically stand to look at it any longer, if you don't think of a solution in the next 5 minutes, the alley cats are getting a new special friend." Matt stood there frowning and looking at the poor bear before breaking out into a grin. He abruptly left the room and came back with an old cardboard box and a marker.
"Where's Near living these days?"
