one day, we meet.

amidst the busy street,

dodging people as new yorkers do,

suddenly, i run into you.

i hit the ground.

confused, in disarray, but i’ve found

the honey in your eyes, warmth in your smile,

and i’m falling, spiraling, all the while

you’re helping me up, dusting me off,

apologizing, sheepishly, for being rough.

i don’t mind, of course.

yet you frown, offer to reimburse

the coffee on the ground,

and i agree — its almost profound

how you were just around.

and suddenly i’m on my way again,

your number soothing my pain.

we tell our children our story.

the memories far from blurry:

the dates spent smiling over drinks,

cheeks shades of various pinks,

nights spent watching the stars,

slow mornings to the sound of cars.

we love like we met: sudden, steadfast.

and one day we’ll take our last

breaths together, hand in hand,

and exit this world, never to disband.
