Pushing Out Beyond Boring

Ok, all of these are from the world of tailoring/seamstresses. They’re pretty self explanatory. The first is variety of sleeves, the second variety of necklines, and the third, variety of silhouettes. These should not be taken as an accurate representation of all the potential variety that’s out there. Absolutely not. The only limitations to garment design is a person’s imagination.

And these pictures are a pretty accurate way of showing why I sometimes get frustrated with pattern designers. You see, the overwhelming majority of sweaters available on Ravelry are structurally nearly identical. They are drop shouldered, no body shaping, either crew necked or v necked rectangles. Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just that I’m always looking for something different. (Like in everything I do. Shopping is an interesting experience with me.)

Unfortunately, or otherwise, most of the focus on design with knitwear patterns seems to be based on stitch pattern instead of variety in the more structural elements of the garment. Well, that’s part of the deal of being raised by a seamstress and falling in love with yarn. I know how much potential is available with fabric. Hell, I have dreams of haute couture knitwear shows. Couture shows aren’t necessarily about things that are functional. They’re about showing the potential of the artform.

Every single one of the varieties shown above is possible with yarn. Every one. Do they take some figuring out? Absolutely. But as long as you understand the basic math of design, there’s nothing you can’t do. The rules of working with yarn are all about the boring shit. It’s the science side. The rest of it… go wild. Dream and try it.

There’s no reason not to.

Hi! I've been thinking of dyeing some yarn and roving to sell and I'm wondering where I should get my bases? I don't know if there's some sort of rule that I couldn't get yarn from somewhere like knitpicks to dye and sell. Also, you're super brave to be starting your own business and I'm so excited for you!

I got mine from www.wool2dye4.com. however, i plan on eventually opening a dyer’s account with ashland bay. when it comes to where you buy for dying, there’s no hard and fast rule. it’s all about where you can get the deal. for projects for yourself, knitpicks is a fine choice. however, if you’re buying in large quantities, like i did, it’s not the best option. it’s kind of one of those things that you have to research before you dive in.

i’m not knocking knitpicks and there’s no rules on you buying and selling from there or any other place. however, it’s a question between retailer and wholesaler. in easier to understand terms, it’s the store down the road versus the one that sells everything in bulk. sometimes it’s the store down the road that’s the appropriate choice. you don’t need that much and it’s really ok that you pay a little bit more per item. but sometimes, like when you’re feeding an army of teenagers, you need the bulk item store.

i’m also giving strong consideration to buying directly from some of the farmers i know and eventually offering some stuff that i send to the mill myself. but that’s the benefit of knowing farmers and lots of fiber people where i can pick their brains and find out where the best mills are. i just really like the idea of supporting the farmers and doing a line of specific conservation breed fiber to help support some less popular critters. but that’s down the line. it’s a gradual building process.
