Why did levi close the door on hanji? he could just wait for them to leave and and he looked sad in that scene.while closing the door. it feels like he really didn't want hanji to hear his conversation with erwin. I remember yams said he felt nearly betrayed when he found out about erwin's true motives maybe he didn't want hange to feel the same, that also happened after they talked to shades and hange was so disappointed in him. I wonder what hange reaction to erwin would be like?
Hi! I’ve always wondered whether Levi ever talked with Hange about Erwin’s dream, after the serum-bowl, during those following four years. It doesn’t seem so, but surely it would’ve been interesting to see Hange’s reaction in discovering it (and generally, to see a conversation between them about their past old friend).
In any case, I think there are reasons to believe Levi didn’t want Hange to hear that conversation. I think he already anticipated what might come when he’d ask Erwin not to take part in the mission, and probably he didn’t want Hange to hear it. As you said, that scene took place after they met Shadis, and Levi saw how Hange got so angered, and disappointed, by their past commander’s story, in learning about his childish reason. I think Hange, differently from Levi, didn’t suspect Erwin could have any ulterior motive, any selfish reason to fight in the SC. It’s probably when they reported the truth they discovered about the human nature of the titans that Levi started questioning Erwin’s reasons to fight (“Is that the real reason you’re in the Survey Corps?”), but Hange didn’t notice Erwin’s smile, and they were visibly confused by Levi’s subsequent sharp remarks.
Levi, as the extremely perceptive person he is, should have understood how much of an inspiration Erwin was for Hange, how much they trusted and respected him, and believed in him. According to what Isayama said in that interview, Levi felt somehow betrayed, in learning that Erwin’s motives weren’t all altruistic, that he was driven by a selfish dream too. It’s reasonable then to think he didn’t want Hange to know about it, to not spoil that perfect image Hange had of him.
"I wonder what hange reaction to erwin would be like?"
I think they would have felt surprised, befuddled (as Levi was) in learning about that gnawing guilt Erwin felt over the deaths of his comrades, over his father’s death, how much it burdened him. I think it would have been somehow alienating for them, to learn that Erwin saw himself as a con man, for exhorting his soldiers with those words Hange so genuinely and fiercely believed in. Those parts of him I think Erwin always kept hidden, and it’s probably with Levi only, in his last moments, that he was capable of voicing those thoughts. Till the very end, I believe Hange retained an almost idealized version of Erwin, an image which later on they struggled to compare themself with, when they took over the role of commander.
However, I don’t think Hange would have felt the same disappointment they felt in learning about Shadis’ story. Differently from Shadis, indeed, Erwin’s selfish side never took him away from doing what were his responsibilities. There was this personal secret dream (and this sense of guilt) which haunted and spurred him to push forward all that time, but all this doesn’t make his dedication to humanity’s future less true, and I think Hange would’ve understood it. Finally, I think nobody better than them could understand that need to go and see, to learn the truth about this world, which were such a fundamental part of Erwin’s motives.
