A good way to start a new year is to paint! There's an online course going on that is Sherlock themed. Violin was the first task. It was quite difficult to use watercolour after such a long period of not practising at all. Nevertheless I m very glad I signed up for this and here is my first result!

When you can not NOT draw anymore, you start small doing little by little again, at night or when you have just a spare minute. So after some consideration and careful planning I found some time that I can dedicate to drawing and painting (yay!) and here's a little preview from my new project about birds. I haven't tried drawing them before, so it'll be great to do something entirely new! It doesn't mean I forgot about flowers, ships and seascapes. I'm gonna revive them too, just one step at a time! :)

I was so scared to try painting this one! Everything seemed impossible: perspective, light, shadows, cracks on the wall and stairs! I wanted to tear it to pieces maybe a dozen times at least. Well, I’m really glad I didn’t! I don’t think this work is perfect, I see the mistakes pretty well, but we are supposed to learn from them, right?

Do you paint mainly from imagination, photo reference, or en plein air?

It really depends on what I paint!

Most of the flowers were done on plein air sessions, I also took my own photos of the flowers I painted to be able to paint when I'm away. For some of the flowers (the ones that do not grow here) I used photos only - I studied shape and colour (and tried and tested my own patience).

For landscapes/seascapes etc - I use photo references only when the subject is new to me and I need to study it and practise (also because I don’t have the sea anyway near my place). The ones that were made with the help of photos are for educational purposes only, I never sell them or anything like that.

Some other landscapes are my imagination only. An idea (or an image) just pops into your mind - and it’s impossible no to paint it! :)

I think every ship is a majestic vessel. They bravely prowl those fierce waters, they endure merciless storms, they are symbols of strength and confidence. That's why my ships are fighting the fogs or rolling gently with the waves gazing at the sunset.

hello I love your artwork. I was wondering what your best advice is on finding inspiration.

Hello and thank you!

The best way to find inspiration for me is to turn to nature - I go for a walk or browse photos of nature online. Flipping through your travel pics is another great way to get inspiration! Those photos always have beautiful scenes captured (+ you get a bonus -> it brings back lots of pleasant memories and exciting adventures!)

I also think reading is a good source of inspiration. There are so many amazing stories and beautiful passages that sometimes I just put the book I’m reading aside and start sketching.

Last but not least, I want to mention my third favourite way to get inspired. People. Chatting with friends, talking to your family, even having a quick word with someone at a coffee shop - everything can lead to creating art. (My flower project started because I had had a discussion about plants in general with my mom)
