All this hate Joker: Folie Ć Deux is getting is so bizarre to me. It reminds me of how the first movie was received in some way, with all the politics behind it, like people saying you were misogynistic if you enjoyed the film or that itās such a violent movie, when the movie is just about a very broken and unloved man wanting to make people laugh and smile, only for his mental state to depreciate the longer the film goes on because heās not doing even remotely emotionally well.
Like, people are really saying, āCanāt believe they made it a [jukebox] musical!!!! š”Why would they do that!? š¤¬š” Doesnāt even make any sense!! Itās so stupid! š¤¬ā
As if the entire first movie never showed Arthur wanting to preform for people, or trying to make children laugh while doing his dances dressed as a clown, or, you know, dancing to imaginary music in the bathroom.
Nope, doesnāt make any sense at all, really. Why would they ever think of making the second film a musical, it really does baffle me. (Please note the sarcastic.)
Then you have people claiming it destroyed Arthurās character development in the first film.
Never mind the fact that the first film, all he wanted was to make people smile, and when he finally, finally thought he had the chance on the Murray Show, the host just made fun of him and invited him on too laugh at him.
Letās not forget, either, that Arthur never planned to kill Murray in the first place. He was going to kill himself in some grand final act to try and get some form of peace or recognition or sympathy, because he just wanted someone to care about himāeven if it was for a little while.
[Spoilers for the second film.]
So the fact that he tried to embrace The Joker identity for the attention (because no one ever just wanted him) only for it to fall through his fingers after realizing itās all people ever cared about and breaking apart after being beaten and sexually assaulted is so unbelievably heartbreaking.
Then. āYou have a visitor.ā
After the fall out? After giving up? Who could it have been? Maybe there was some hope, someone actually wanted him for once.
And thenā¦
ā¦there never was a visitor⦠was there?
It was just a lie, an excuse to get him alone and kill him. Killed by someone that embraced the persona.
Itās a tragic end to a tragic life, the story of a man that accidentally created a movement, and wanted nothing more than to be loved.
