A Non-profit organization that provides children with medical care in developing countries across the globe and here in the U.S. Over 90% of all funds donated to Mending Kids are spent on programs to aid children. In 2014 alone, we will provide more than 500 surgeries to kids that might otherwise never get the proper care. #FlashbackFriday to our recent China mission where 10 adorable children received life-saving surgeries at The Henan Province People's Hospital in Zhengzhou. Led by Dr. Philip Frykman and Dr. Keith Kimble our team provided care for sick orphans who now have a second chance at life and a greater chance at being adopted into a forever home. This mission would not have been possible if it wasn't for the fundraising efforts made by Mending Kids Global Ambassador, @gem0816 who took the time to visit the children during her worldwide tour. Today we give thanks for all the children's lives you've helped us touch. One child that is most grateful today is Ivan, age 12, from Uganda. He had been on our wait list over a year for critical open heart surgery. Thanks to our donors he finally received his surgery this month at our partner hospital in India. We are so happy to report Ivan’s surgery was a success! Here is Ivan newly mended and happier than ever after his surgery. His surgery went so well he already has been discharged and is returning home to Uganda with a new life ahead of him. At Mending Kids, we are constantly innovating to improve the quality, safety and efficacy of our surgical missions. Maintaining complete and detailed records for each child we serve is critical to ensuring patient safety and continuity of care. Although the majority of mission organizations still use paper charts, Mending Kids is a leader in the field and is investing in the development and integration of electronic medical records (EMR) during surgical missions. Dr. Ayal Willner has been instrumental in moving our EMR program forward and recently tested a pilot patient database tool during our recent mission to Guatemala. We are overjoyed to report our beautiful girl, Zharick, from Ecuador is finally receiving heart surgery after a very long wait. When Zharick was a baby she had open heart surgery with us here in the U.S. A few years ago her family reached out again as it turned out Zharick needed a very complex follow up surgery. We never gave up on Zharick and finally found a hospital in Argentina that could perform the complex surgery and for free. Zharick and her family arrived in Argentina last week and are preparing for her surgery tomorrow. Our Tanzania tag-team is mending away hard this week! Our colorectal team led by Dr. Jason Frischer has mended 20 children so far, and our ENT team led br Dr. Ayal Willner has mended 8 children as of today. They are operating out of 3 ORs and training the local staff at the Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza. The team is in great spirits and are building a wonderful relationship and trust with the locals in respect to the day to day shortages this community faces in order to manage the 16 million people from northwest Tanzania and the lake region who rely on this hospital for critical health services. This is Ivan, age 12, from Uganda. He has been on our wait list over a year for open heart surgery. He is finally having his surgery and arrived at our partner hospital in India this week with his older brother. He couldn't believe that this was finally happening for him and asked his brother if it was real or he was dreaming. Here is a note from his brother: "Ivan likes schooling and he tries hard to at least reach there but the problem came when his condition worsened, and could no longer walk long distances​. The whole of last year he didn't go to school because we were always in hospital but he managed to start this year to a nearby village school. Still his attendance was not all that good due to heart problem because Ivan doesn't normally fall sick. He also likes riding bikes and playing football." Our China team and kids got a sweet surprise yesterday when Mending Kids Global Ambassador, @gem0816 took the time out of her busy schedule to travel to Zhengzhou to greet the team and comfort the kids having surgery. This mission may not of been possible if it wasn't for G.E.M.'s passion to help our China kids and get them the life-saving surgeries they desperately needed. This year on G.E.M.'s birthday she did not want gifts. She asked her fans to donate in honor of her day so we could fund our China mission. And thanks to her supporters we raised over $40,000 and were able to deploy this critical mission!
