I have looked for years on a way to make an office floor plan map using FIlemaker Pro. I wanted the map to be usable via the web and update whenever I changed an employee's contact information, such as office number, picture, name, etc.
Well I figured out how to do it and it is a very easy setup. It does take time on the front end because you have to set up every location individually. Once it is set, you don't have to touch it again.
One of best things I found that discusses how to do this is an article about showing multiple records on one layout. Check it out. I also used a simple switch from Seedcode for viewing name, office numbers and if any offices are empty currently. Seedcode makes some sweet Filemaker Pro stuff. To start off, I needed to create a table in the map database with a field for each office location. In that table, you will have one record with each office number that correlates to the office numbers in the Contact database. I imported an Excel spreadsheet instead of manually creating each field in Filemaker. See spreadsheet here.
Basically, you have make a duplicate of the Contacts table in the Relationships that matches each office location. Then you connect each field from the Globals table to a separate instance of the Contacts table. I renamed each instance of the Contacts table with the name of the office field. This helps out when you are selecting what information you want to show in each field.
For each office location I created a field that would show the employee's name. These fields are all different instances of the Contact table that you create in the Relationships area. Below that field I created an invisible popover button. Clicking the field would run a script that would show the popover. I used a single script with a scriptparameter to use for each field.
I know this is not a lot of information, but it is the first database I created that I am letting people use. I just was so frustrated trying to find what I was looking for, I wanted other people to not have the same problem.
