I get what you're trying to do, but I don't think he's using me, and even if he is...well, it's not really your place. I've got to figure this out on my own, you know? Piper: I never said I hated him-- I'm only trying to look out for you. He's selfish, and cruel, and I don't understand how or why he got an angel, especially like you. Piper: I am just trying to get him to be honest, Mase. I know you want to see the good in him, but if he's just being a jerk and stringing you along, I just think you'd be better off without him, you know? Please don't be mad.

[Text] I don’t think it matters on whether or not I need him. He’s kind of reevokably bound to me. And he’s not so bad. I mean… I sort of needed him when Santana was under, but I won’t be dragging him into any fist fights. I don’t have any sort of wish for him to die.

[Text] Maybe, maybe not.  I know plenty of angels that don’t have this weird connection.  It’s possible that he just thinks he has to be close to you.  You seem to be able to hold your own without him.  I mean, what exactly did he do for you when Lopez was out?  You could have called one of your own friends.  You don’t need to take advantage of him after all.

“Well, um…” The blonde boy tapped his hands on the table.  How?  How could she ask him how?  As if he’d made the decision?  “I don’t know exactly, but you have to admit he’s been through some rough spats lately—he could probably use the help.”  He gave a tentative smile, though the girl didn’t seem inclined to return it.  “I definitely am sure though Piper,” he affirmed.  “I mean—I’ve never felt anything like it around him.  And I know he feels something too.  And maybe…maybe me being his angel will help people realize that he’s not so bad.  Because—he’s not, Piper.  I mean, he’s a little rough, but I think he’s just got a bad rep.  Maybe this is the kind of thing that will help him turn that around, you know?” He was encouraged by her hand in his, and her words, even if they weren’t exactly one hundred percent positive.  Mason scooted forward in the seat.  “I’m willing to do anything, Piper,” he told her earnestly.  “Anything, to get us back to where we were.  I mean, I know I messed up; a couple times.  But I really think what we have is special, and worth fighting for.”  He tilted his head forward.  “Just tell me what I can do.”

Piper’s teeth scraped against her bottom lip as she considered their situation.  “Well, I mean…what do you think is going to happen?  Like, are you going to be putting yourself in situations like he’s been in—getting jumped in alleys and stuff—because I just…that sounds dangerous Mason.  You’re only sixteen after all.  And before, you said it was important, that it felt right to be near him.  What if…I don’t know—what if he doesn’t want you, I mean?  Does it hurt forever, or could you remove yourself from him then?  Can things be changed like that?”  She shook her head and kept her eyes focused on the table.  “I just—I know that you are a good guy Mason, but I worry that your goodness may not be enough to bring up his standing around here.  I just don’t want to see you get hurt.” The mermaid couldn’t help but smile at the blue eyes that shone at her.  “I want things to be good between us too Mason.  I hate that things seem to keep popping up to get in the way, but I feel like it must be something worth having if it’s so hard to get, right?  So, I mean, I don’t know what to do yet, but I know I’m not willing to give up.  Just…just give me a little time, all right?”  She smiled at him cautiously, wanting things to be good between them but worried about how long it seemed to be taking to make it work.  Was that even normal?

The angel’s smile became a little more genuine when Piper offered to let him explain.  She was a good person; one of the things he always liked about her.  Like him, she always appreciated good people and was willing to understand and forgive mistakes.  He just had to explain things right. “Well, I told you I was in love with Monroe, and that I’d never felt like this with anyone.  I kind of felt like I didn’t have a choice—like it was fate or something, remember?”  Her lips pressed firmly together, but she nodded, so he continued.  “Well, you were right—it turned out I wasn’t in love with him.  Which is good, because I am really sure that I’m straight now, so that just would have been really confusing honestly.”  He laughed self-deprecatingly, and chuckled a little more when she softly joined him.  Mason loved the mermaid’s laugh: it was light and bubbly and lit up the room.

“So, yeah: it turns out, everything I was feeling?  Totally different reason.  Um…Monroe Jameson is…he’s my charge, Piper.  I’m finally someone’s for-real guardian angel.”  He offered a shy smile and a shrug as he watched her expression freeze in shock.  He wasn’t sure what to make of it yet, so he kept going, “I guess guardian angels have a sort of empathic connection with the people they look after, which is why I wanted to be around him.”  The boy reached out and took Piper’s hand in his.  “But it also explains why I want to be with you—why I still care about you.  And I know that it’s not fair to ask you to respond to all of that now, but you’ve been my friend for so long Piper—I don’t want to lose that.”

Piper couldn’t speak—couldn’t think of anything to say.  She’d thought she’d conjured up all of the reasons that Mason could have had for his weird boy-crush; thought she’d be able to get over anything he sent her way.  But now?  This was so much worse than anything the mermaid could have envisioned—it was worse than being in love with Monroe: Mason would be forever connected, forever empathetic to the geopath.  The young Asian girl’s face twisted in disbelief.  “I don’t—I can’t— how?” she finally managed to spit out.  “I mean…are you sure?”  It was impossible for Piper to wrap her head around.  Mason was good—guardian angels were good.  How could the sweet, earnest, wonderful teenager before her be fated to watch over a horrible ex-Rebel like Monroe Jameson?  “Does he even really need someone like you Mason?  I mean—what exactly would you do for him?  He’s not exactly a people person, you know.” She allowed him to take her hand—she wanted him to hold her hand like this ever since he’d stopped.  The mermaid had felt like a fool since she’d broken it off with him in November, and it had taken forever for them to get back on track.  And now there was this, and she just…she didn’t know what to think.  She inhaled deeply.  “I care about you too, Mason—so much.  I don’t want to lose it either.  I just…” the Asian teen trailed off uncertainly,  not knowing how to finish her sentence.

The teenage angel felt his stomach tighten at the cold reception.  He had to admit he’d been hoping for something…well, more compassionate, that reflected their history instead of just the last couple weeks.  But apparently that was a lot, so instead he was just playing it out this way.  Not that he blamed Piper: he just wished that everyone wasn’t here to see him groveling. “Look, I know I messed up,” he told her, leaning forward across the table.  He wanted to take her hands, really connect, but every barrier she could put between them was up, so Mason just tried to look as sincere as he could.  “But I actually have a really good reason, and when I explain it to you—well, you may not forgive me for everything, but maybe you’ll be able to hate me a little less I’m hoping?”

Piper watched him intently.  She cared about him, so much.  She already wanted to forgive him for being an idiot and he hadn’t even explained anything.  Mason was such a good guy: he was honest, and kindhearted, and he always believed the best in people.  If he hadn’t turned those qualities onto Monroe Jameson, she would have said they were the perfect qualities.  However, the fact that the boy couldn’t see what a sketchy character the elemental was, that he could in fact develop a crush on him, was what gave her pause.  But maybe…well, she supposed it wouldn’t hurt just to see what he had to say, right? “Alright Mase,” she relented slightly, relaxing her body language a little and moving her hands straight out in front of her.  “I’m listening.  What the heck happened?”  Please don’t say Santana, please don’t say Santana…

Mason could not have missed the way the patrons of The Sweet Tooth glanced over at him.  Piper had purposely brought him here so he could witness it.  A lot of stuff had gone down recently, not the least of which involved him acting like a complete ass to the Asian girl behind the counter, but apparently he was determined to at least try to make amends.  And besides, the mermaid did care very much for the fool, so shouldn’t she at least hear him out? The mermaid who was staring him down currently, face set in a thin line that looked anything but welcoming.  The blonde angel’s shoulders slumped as he ducked his head slightly, forcing his face into a half-smile.  Just because she’d agreed to listen to him didn’t mean she had to be congenial about it after all.  He tipped his head toward the left slightly, indicating that he’d like to take a seat if she would give him the whole ten minutes she’d promised.  Piper huffed impatiently, but his eyes expressed his relief as she pulled off her apron and walked out from behind the counter and toward the table he’d motioned toward, sitting fluidly and dropping her arms across her chest in front of her expectantly.  “Okay, Mason.  You have ten minutes—what did you want to talk about?”

event|| AFTER Games|| Angry Fish out of Water: Piper, 4/11/2015

Piper felt herself gasping for air as she struggled to the surface.  She couldn’t believe Kyle Zangari had managed to overtake her in the water and get the jump on her.  And, by the looks of it, the wet dog was making a clean getaway back into the tree where her sister was dragging his sodden body topside. An Agent swam up to help her to shore, and the small girl let the woman do the work while she pouted.  When they reached the edge of the field, a Healer handed her a robe and slippers and gave her a once-over before guiding her to the recovery table for water or sandwiches or whatever refreshments would suit her.  The teenager took the soup offered to her as graciously as she could, but unfortunately she caught sight of a dark-haired geopath in the stands—apparently leaving if his direction was anything to go by—and her mood just went all to hell.  This was all his fault—confusing Mason, luring him in with some weird obsession just when the two teens were starting to get back to rights.  Causing the angel to drop his revelation on her just yesterday.  It was practically like he wanted her taken down, which she wouldn’t have been surprised if the Runner had—Piper was going up against his girlfriend after all.  And so now he was just using the angel yet again.  How did Mason not see that?  It drove her crazy. She couldn’t focus too much on the stress, however, as the tag was making her queasy as it was.  She sipped the broth carefully to settle her stomach and looked out to the stands.  There were so many people out there: family cheering their kin on; friends watching friends; significant others supporting each other.  And yet she knew that the blonde boy she so desperately wanted with her now…wouldn’t be.  Mason never watched the Games—he never liked the idea of practice fighting.  But she had hoped this year, after everything they’d been through, he would have changed his mind—for her.  Instead, she huddled further into her robe, upset as she watched the games continue, wondering what would happen to her ex, and how far Monroe would let this go before undoubtedly destroying the nicest guy she’d ever met.

[Text] Yes, I'm sure-- I've known him for two years.  We've dated four months.  He's a Guardian Angel.  So whatever you think you saw, it wasn't him afraid of blood.  I'll admit he's worried about the attack, but not the wounds associated with them.  And like I said-- I know Mason.  Santana isn't his type.  So you decide to tell him all about you and her having sex to avoid it?  He's trying to show some respect by not bringing up the less than moral activities your girlfriend partook in while you were gone, and instead you make homophobic digs at him.  He deserves better that-- surely even you can understand that.
