MERCURIA TRACK OF THE YEAR AWARD – 3rd: LOGO - Cardiocleptomania
Cardiocleptomania | Kitsuné | France
There's something distinctive about LOGO's mammoth track this year. It's not french-touch, but it certainly has that french touch to it, and for that reason it just sounds inexplicably better than most.
The Parisian duo have had a solid season this year, churning out many a mix of cutting edge shit, and have had many successful originals and remixes in Fabrice and their version of Gohan's Hedge Fund, to name a couple. The music has brought the two to the attention of many this year, and the future looks bright.
What really captured the ears and souls of many this year was Cardiocleptomania, however. We're at the pointy end of this list now, and there's a reason this track, released on Kitsuné is here. From the get-go, the piece is captivating, and by the 35th second when the ride starts rolling and the bass pulses you'll be fully sold. Every element of it is exciting.
My favourite part however is the amount of tension sustained over the course of the track's 6 minutes and 52 second entirety. The suspense is thick, and it's expertly dragged across the entire song. It becomes most felt at the buildups such as at 2:06, and even more so at 3:43. Man that part's sublime. The blurred shadow of those heavenly strings, combined with that mysterious stab sequence, and the high-vibrato'd chords sweeping the board makes for an incredible sound that oozes of all the tenseness that defines this beast. Easily my favourite 20 second section (3:44-4:04) out of anything this year. Then, as the hypnosis intensifies, the track cuts back, brooding and stormy. It drops, and suddenly we're back to familiar territory.
In a sense, Cardiocleptomania feels as much an adventure or a short film as an often Social Club set centerpiece, but it is deservingly the latter. Its technicality, name and blend of sounds stands it apart from much else, and we love it.
The thought provoking video that accompanies it is excellent as well, and is well worth watching.
LOGO look to have some tricks up their sleeve for 2014, beginning with the unnamed track at 26:23 of this mix. That one looks to be giant.
