𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙍𝙔𝘽𝙊𝘿𝙔'𝙎 𝙏𝙐𝙍𝙉𝙀𝘿 𝙊𝙉 𝘽𝙍𝙔𝘾𝙀 𝙒𝘼𝙇𝙆𝙀𝙍.  the  reasons  are  realistic,  they  make  sense,  and  alex  is  definitely  one  of  the  ones  who  turned.  but  not  everyone  could  make  that  choice.  if  you  were  forced  into  someone’s  life  by  blood,  it  was  probably  a  lot  harder  to  cut  them  out.  and  in  that  regard?  alex  had  sympathy  for  mercy  walker.  it  was  hard  enough  being  related  to  him  on  a  good  day,  he  couldn’t  imagine  how  she  was  coping  with  everything  that  was  going  on.  ❝  hey…  ❞  he  hesitates  as  he  approaches  her,  knowing  he  probably  shouldn’t,  ❝  i  just  wanted  to  see  how  you  were  doing.  ❞

She had heard the recordings posted. EVERYONE had heard them, the talk of the school being how golden boy Bryce Walker was an absolute MONSTER behind closed doors. The rest of the horrors on those recordings of a dead girl couldn’t even compare to what he had done. The questions she had already received, on if she had ever known anything. The answer being of course not but some weren’t so quick to believe. So when someone else was approaching, Mercy turned with the full intention of telling them to just LEAVE HER ALONE. But then seeing it was none other than Alex, one of her brother’s little friends and another name on the recordings, she had to pause. Well if anyone else might understand what it felt like to just be STARED AT, it had to be one of the others, right?

Her lips were pressed into a thin line before attempting to turn upwards into an obviously FORCED smile. Mercy never was a great LIAR.     ❝      Fine. Totally fine. Just algebra is really killing me, you know?     ❞      Not what he meant and Mercy damn well knew it.

Bryce KNOWS he’s not the greatest guy on earth, knows he’s done BAD THINGS, but he wants to think that he’s redeemable. Wants to think that THE LIBERTY HIGH RAPIST isn’t all he’s going to be for the rest of his life. But it’s not that simple, it’s never that simple, and he has to wonder if the world will ever actually let him change. He can want to change all he wants, can WANT to be a good guy, but without action, it’ll never happen. And without the world accepting his attempts his actions will never REALLY MATTER.

❝       You’re RIGHT.    ❞     Spoken quietly, the boy trying to CONVINCE HIMSELF of that rather than give her validation in her statement. He’s the bad guy and he needs to ACCEPT that. Nothing truly good can come from his denial. Nothing will ever get better when he DENIES the only thing that the rest of the world knows about him. Perhaps part of why he’s so defensive is that its MERCY. it’s his sister, and not even she is on his side. Why would she be? What he did was fucked up, and she has every right to be TERRIFIED of him.

❝       I’m the bad guy.    ❞     To Hannah, to Jessica, probably to Chloe, to other girls, TO MERCY.  He’s the kind of guy he wants Mercy to stay far away from, a HYPOCRITE through and through. He’s going to try to fix that, try to fix himself, but he wonders how much he can actually change. He can work hard, he can get help, but none of that will change the URGES. His sick instincts, the urge towards violence. Even if he OUTWARDLY CHANGES, inside those urges will still plague him. Even if he denounces them, even if they DISGUST him, they’ll still be there. Still be a part of him. And he wonders if he would ever really be able to be RID of them, or if he’s doomed to be the bad guy forever.

❝       Do you think I can change? BE GOOD?    ❞     He’s heard people say that anyone can change, but he’s heard those same people turn around and talk about how Bryce Walker is THE DEFINITION OF EVIL. He wonders if that’s how Mercy thinks of him, as simply an EVIL PERSON who would never change. He hopes that she wouldn’t think of him in that way, but he couldn’t blame her if she did. 

He has no idea exactly what she heard on those tapes, but he assumes that Hannah didn’t HOLD BACK. She was never going to have to face anyone she talked about again, why would she hold back on the truth? To Hannah Baker, Bryce was ALL THAT WAS BAD in the world. He doesn’t know exactly who or what is on those tapes, but he’s sure that if there’s any single person to blame it’s HIM. And he will live with that for the rest of his life. It’s something he’s sure he DESERVES, though. If Hannah took her own life away simply because of him, then the LEAST he deserved was to spend the rest of his own life regretting how much he BROKE HER.

There was still some naivety about her, some part that wanted to say that ANYONE could change. But this was different than just some school bully or even an addict or a thief. This was a criminal that had done things she wasn’t sure anyone could just FORGIVE after everything he had done. Bryce was no longer the golden boy bound for some prestigious college or a star athlete. He wasn’t the guy that would do anything to help his friends or the brother she had looked up to in some obscure fashion. Those titles had been stripped from him, RIGHTFULLY SO, and his dark actions had been brought to light. Now the only thing that would stick with him was a single label: RAPIST. A boy that had taken advantage of other girls, of people’s trust.

❝        I don’t know,       ❞      she finally answered in a soft voice. Where once she might lie to spare someone’s feelings, to encourage them, right now she couldn’t. Maybe it was still the alcohol giving her the courage or lack of CARE to say what was on her mind, but she couldn’t so quickly say that he was capable of it. How long had he been doing such things and getting away with them? How long had it gone on for him to think it was okay and that he wouldn’t be held accountable? Maybe that was the more nauseating idea——— that her brother had once been under the illusion that those actions were OKAY.

At least he could still play in sports and be a shining example to the team. At least he still made their parents proud and held up the Walker name. 

That was how she thought it had been in his own TWISTED mind anyways. That his other actions made up for everything else or maybe he really had no idea but who couldn’t know that it was WRONG? A shuddering breath, nerves starting to come alight once more but she bit them down.    ❝        If you did and I mean REALLY did want to change, you’d have to acknowledge what you did. Not just to me but to others and——— and to yourself. You’d have to know what you did was wrong and you’d have to get HELP. Like psychological help.        ❞     Though Mercy doubted their father would be up for that. After Bryce had been accused, how would it look if others found out he was seeing someone? And he certainly wouldn’t hear of it to let Bryce admit what he did, how dare he ruin the family name further? Their mother, on the other hand———

But none of his was a guarantee. Maybe he was just a monster who could never learn. Maybe in a few years, they’d learn he never once stopped and continued on. Maybe right now was just some game; Mercy really had no idea who he was anymore or what to expect.    ❝        But I don’t think anyone in this town will ever see you as anything else. Even if, SOMEHOW, you do change, you can’t expect others to forgive you for it.      ❞     There certainly would be no second chance, not in this town.

             hannah    was    staring    down    at    her    food    ,    picking   at    it    with    her    fork    with    an    empty    mind.    she    felt    too    broken    after    bryce’s    party.    she    was    full    of    regret…    and    yet    still    felt    like    she    was    hollow    inside.     she    felt    eyes   on    her    which    made    her    look    up    with    her    glistening    ones.     ❛     sorry   ,    did    you     need     something    ?     ❜      she    asked    ,    her    voice    breaking    in    the    middle    of    her    sentence.

When Mercy had decided to approach the other girl, she certainly hadn’t expected to see TEARS swimming in her eyes. It stopped her dead for several moments, clinging to her own packed lunch. Lips parted at the question but no sound came out, Mercy trying to gather her own thoughts. It wasn’t exactly some great secret how the Baker girl had been treated in the past, the DISGUSTING nature of high schoolers, unfortunately.   ❝      I was actually going to ask if you could help me on my creative writing assignment. Writing MUSIC, I can do but actual words? And I heard you were a pretty good writer by someone so———      ❞   But now, that was a far distant thought that trailed off on her tongue. Hardly even IMPORTANT now seeing the state of her.

There was a moment of hesitation, of wondering if she should quickly back down entirely, before finally moving to sit across from the girl. Her own lunch remained in its pack and untouched for the moment.    ❝       Are you okay? I mean, stupid question, right? I know we haven’t exactly spoken for but I honestly AVOID people I see with my brother.     ❞    They were never her STYLE, her brother and her living in entirely different worlds and she could have sworn she’d seen her around with Bryce before. Or at least with his other little group of FRIENDS.

            things    had    been….     quite    difficult    for    everyone    in    school    since    bryce’s    death.    everyone    had    a    different    opinion    about    how    they    felt.    but    cyrus    couldn’t    imagine    how    mercy    felt.     ❛     —–     are    you    okay    ?     ❜      he    asked    ,    standing    over    her    as    she    sat.     he    personally    didn’t    like    bryce.    he    hated    what   he    did   to   those    girls    but….     he   never    wished    anyone    dead.

The voice drew her attention, eyes lifting to meet the gaze of one of the other students. She’d seen him around, he certainly STOOD OUT in a crowd. There was a beat and a moment for the question to even register in her mind. Hardly anyone asked her that and part of Mercy was RELIEVED that they didn’t. Less burden on her shoulders, less expectations on what she was SUPPOSED to say. Some people had made it quite clear what they thought of Bryce Walker and anyone that might be even remotely upset by his death. Just when she had found footing again at Liberty High, Mercy found herself walking on eggshells once more, ever so careful of what she said and DID under the watch of others.

So after a long pause, the girl managed a smile, shoulders rising and falling in a half-hearted shrug.   ❝      I’m doing fine. I mean, my English grades could be better, I guess. But fine other than that.     ❞     LIAR. But lying was something she was used to already, every Walker was in their own way. But it’s not like any of them, any of the other students, even knew the changes happening behind closed doors.

Hers came from playing the perfect daughter while his came from——— well, she could only assume it came from the DEATH of that girl. She had seen them in the halls together once upon a time along with Jess. Then the trio became a duo though even Mercy saw how DISTANT her brother’s friend had become when she caught glimpses of him in their home or at school.
