ooc; i am so so so sorry for the inactivity here to all of you precious gems who are still following me. sometime during finals next week or the week after i’m going to try to get this blog back on its feet (though arguably i don’t think it ever was on its feet) but there’s a few things i want to change about her bio and this blog is just gonna go through a huge makeover and it’s gonna take me a few days, but i do intend on coming back! dec 18th is my last day of school so I’ll see you all soon!

She did not WANT to be there. She had made excuses where she could, but Marina had been particularly INSISTENT that night. The unnamed mermaid had done what she could to stay out of sight and notice of the others, the sick feeling in her stomach growing with every minute. What they were doing was WRONG; could they not see that the loss of life was a thing to be MOURNED, and not celebrated?

Her hopes to remain anonymous were SHATTERED as Marina’s voice split the still night air. She had not been forgotten. She had not been brought along to watch. She had been brought to become one of them. A lump rose in her throat as the eyes of all her sisters fell upon her, judging her inability to do what came so naturally to all of them. She wanted to speak out, to tell Marina that she could not do this horrible thing, but the lump was still growing, choking her words before she could even wonder if she had courage enough to speak them.

The nameless creature moved through the water, surrounded by staring eyes and open mouths festooned with fangs that lusted for fresh blood. Her wide eyes were downcast, unable to meet the gazes of her wilder sisters. She arrived at Marina’s side, raising her eyes to the elder siren only when she felt the lump in her throat loosen slightly. She had her words planned in her mind, but as soon as she met Marina’s hard stare, her confidence fell away. How could she stand up to a whole pod of opposition? Why was SHE the exception to the rule? Why did she find it so hard to fit in to the lifestyle she was BORN to?

Wordlessly, her dark eyes shifted to the man in the boat, completely unaware of the danger that awaited him. There HAD to be a way to save him from the fate Marina was pressing him towards.

Marina still remembered the days of Poseidon’s rule, the days when mermaids weren’t as feared nor were they as HUNTED as they had been for the last few centuries. Things were different then, and perhaps a mermaid such as the one that now peered up at Marina with eyes that were practically begging her not to make her do this would not have found herself to be the odd one out of the pod. It was only after the mortals became GREEDY in their ambitions and HEARTLESS in their tactics that the mermaids were forced to make them their prey lest they be forced to remain the HUNTED. 

Perhaps that was why Marina felt the need to help this one. She lived to see both ages, and she knew the younger mermaid wasn’t born WRONG as she may have believed, she just wasn’t born EVOLVED, but what the merfolk had evolved into was argueably not something for the better. They had become a NECESSARY EVIL, and their new taste for human flesh and their loss of conventional kindness was a means of SURVIVAL. If this mermaid with the spirit of the ancients wanted to survive in this new age of man, she would have to get used to these crueler practices just as Marina had long ago. 

She was growing impatient with the mermaid’s reluctance to do what she had ordered, especially since the others would take it as an act of defiance and expect Marina not to tolerate it. Can’t you see what I am doing to help you?  she wanted to shout, but kept her herself composed for the sake of maintaining face among the pod. Instead, she opted to lean in closer to the unnamed one, her words whispered quietly into her ear, but formed with such a harsh tone that it would’ve held the same effect if she had shouted and spat the words in her face. 

                ❝ That man there would not waste a second to kill you if given the chance.                     This is a matter of SURVIVAL, not morality. Now bring him to us. ❞

The mermaids had zeroed in on their first kill of the night, a lone fisherman who had been caught in a recent storm and who now found himself lost and drifting too close to MERMAID TERRITORY. Getting the man into the water was easy enough given the smaller size of the boat. All it would take was a simple leap from the water followed by a quick snatch and he was done for, but instead of calling on the attack, Marina brought the pod to a stop, her head protruding the water’s surface to get a better look of the sailor who, as of yet, was still unaware of the impeding dangers he faced. She turned to face the rest of the pod who were still waiting for her command, but her eyes immediately rested on one and one alone: 

                                                     -- -- the unnamed mermaid. 

          ❝ YOU, ❞ she called. ❝ -- Let us see you lure the hunt into the water. ❞ 

The others knew then why Marina had insisted on bringing her along when it was common knowledge that this one was a LOST CAUSE, and one who would bring nothing to the community with her SOFTNESS. It was supposed to be a way of giving her a chance to prove herself, and to send her on her way to finally earning a name and place within the pod.

The blue-tail queens had just ended their business with Jack, receiving the Stoney Eye of Stoned-Eyed Sam and in exchange they’d let him and his friends leave the island unharmed, but if Jack ever returned to Isla Sirena he would have to give the mermaids that which he wanted most. They never specified what that thing was, even if they knew exactly what it was. Marina didn’t think the boy knew what he had really signed up for. If he thought the mermaids wanted the magic sword he was currently seeking, he was surely mistaken.

Regardless, it seemed like a good deal -- afterall why would Jack ever even want to come back to Isla Sirena? Jack may not have known it yet, but his quest for the Sword of Cortes would require the Stoney Eye he’d just given the mermaids, which meant sooner or later he’d have to come back for it. Mermaids were deceptive in that way, yet this mermaid felt the need to warn him for some reason, just how she felt the need to bring Jack to the blue-tails in the first place rather than have her sisters devour him and his crew when they found them. It wasn’t because she was particularly soft-hearted towards the humans-- they had only ever given her a reason to despise them.

No, it wasn’t fondness that coaxed her to protect Jack, but her mermaid’s intuition. Something was different about this young pirate, something was important about him, yet she couldn’t see why just yet. He didn’t fall victim to the Siren’s song like the others did, and in the hundreds of years that Marina had lived she’d never come across someone like that. It made her curious.

Curious enough to want to keep him alive. 

          ❝ Wipe that smirk off your face, human, ❞ she said after safely escorting             him back to the Barnacle. ❝ That kiss was so you wouldn’t drown, and             I can assure you it’ll be the last.                                                              -- -- Next time, you’ll hold your breath. ❞

Mermaids exist in folklore all around the world and are in some cases associated with storms, shipwrecks and drownings, and in others they can be beneficient, benevolent and bestow boons upon sailors and their ships. There are many tales of sailors falling in love with mermaids, usually with unfortunate results for either one, or both of the lovers.
