i just want to make something abundantly clear bc i just had to block a dozen people that followed me: this is NOT a terf safe zone for any reason with zero exceptions!!!! terfs are not welcome here, nor should they be anywhere. get your bigotry away from my neopets and fuck off to whatever swamp you crawled from thank youuu
at the actual ass crack of dawn TNT has now put out a statement about the geekify TTRPG, stating that they will be ending their license agreement with geekify effective immediately
Neopets addresses concerns over the Geekify TTRPG beta, citing lore and brand misalignment, demanding fixes, transparency, and timelines.
the reasoning is very vague, likely to avoid lawsuits, but with the specific mention of "quality, reliability, and overall customer experience" the reason for the split is likely due to issues with geekify reported by other users in the past.
due to the way that kickstarter handles queries and refunds, all backer refunds are being handled by geekify directly as opposed to neopets themselves. This is standard for Kickstarter projects, this is not TNT shirking their responsibility onto Geekify. i personally don't care enough to fight them for the singular dollar i gave them, but if you backed this project for any tier higher than that i encourage you to seek a refund ASAP.
TNT has also stated that they're stepping in to ensure that all backers receive the promised avatar, updates will be provided as soon as the distribution method is ready. so at least we all get a fun memento from this absolute trainwreck.
update because i didn't see this until now, the owner of geekify posted an update in the project's discord server (quote via jellyneo):
"Hey guys, we're temporarily muting the server, as it's currently 2am and people are piling onto the Discord. Neopets has absolutely blindsided us with this announcement after being unresponsive and taking seemingly no active interest in communicating about the project, offering guidance, or clarification at all.
We're assessing next steps, as this leaves everything in the worst possible state for moving forward. We will post an update on the Kickstarter soon."
the server was then locked, with no new messages being able to be posted and message history restricted so no one else can view this update. the questions channel was also locked an hour later.
this was THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. and now you can only view messages in the server if you were online at an ungodly hour. this doesn't bode well for the kickstarter or geekify as a company if they make vague statements and immediately close ranks and hide questions so that no one can see them.
i highly suggest you talk to your bank directly about refunding payments to geekify because i have a gut feeling that they're not going to be any more transparent when it comes to refunds.
I've been following this KS for a long time, and unfortunately spent quite a bit of money on it as I wanted those sweet, sweet physical rewards. The whole thing is absolutely insane. Especially with the new update on the KS page.
The Kickstarter update from last night is basically Geekify making excuses that it was actually *Neopets'* fault they breached their agreement and also all the stuff they promised was actually written already, we swear guys, we just can't show you or otherwise prove it.
Specifically, the part included in the update that makes me feel absolutely insane is "The unpublished parts of the RPG have far more whimsy and emphasis on Neopets feel". So... is there a reason that wasn't carried into the playtest? They also claimed that the game wasn't a 5e reskin and was closer to Fabula Ultima and PbtA, even though one of the original pitches on the KS page said the system would be 5e and Pathfinder based. I've played Fabula Ultima, and don't necessarily think that'd be a bad fit, but with the materials they put out, I just flat out don't believe this system was closer to that style of play.
Oh and they had a whole paragraph that said that things wouldve been better if Neopets and the fan base had just been more patient. Oh and also how they can't refund everyone. :))
I can't imagine that Neopets is 100% without blame here, but jfc does Geekify look bad right now.
check your emails folks! neopets has released a newsletter(?) with information about what's to come in februrary
a lot of the on site content is stuff we already know about, neopies, sakhmet soiree, new pet slots, but some of it is new.
first of all, the neopian book award will be getting a new beta page and the ability to search and sort books alongside some prizes for milestones (oh boy, you might wanna get the cheaper books while you still can)
second of all, the wheel of monotony is now becoming a NP sink. specifically, you'll be able to "grease" the wheel by spending neopoints (likely in exponential amounts) to make the wait time shorter. this is explicitly stated as a balancing feature, quote, "Enjoy quicker results and help keep Neopia’s economy balanced!".
third of all (and the biggest one by far),
THEY'RE FIXING THE FUCKING VARWOLF EVENT.
after several months, they've made the decision to make the putrid pumpkin, hungry fungus, and mound of rotten fruit shop restockable. these items are r89, meaning they restock at around 2500 NP. that is a MASSIVE drop in price, even if it means you have to compete with restock bots to obtain them.
morphing potions are also being released to make the pet even more accessible, which is such a long time coming. it's been almost 4 months since the mini plot released.
the email promises more releases to come, but frankly that's all i needed to hear.
prices for the hungry fungus and mound of rotten fruit have been very slowly dropping, especially because the fester detector apparently DOES guarantee the hungry fungus as one of its prizes. but they're still 20-30 million NP a piece and listings on the TP often ask for additional items like magical chia pops and cool neggs.
putrid pumpkin is at a cool 2k btw. this is such a crock of shit.
this isn't even a problem with other limited species. there's two species that require only a SINGULAR item to create, and they are less than the cost of just the hungry fungus ALONE (with the exception of the gold draik egg).
the difference is (beyond the fact that draiks and krawks only require one item to create as opposed to three) that these items are readily available from other means, even if they're rare. you don't have to sit around with your thumb up your ass hoping you either hit the odds from one (1) daily or can find someone not asking for infamously rare and expensive items.
this was likely meant to be a fun lore activity to expand on varwolves as a pet species in a way that's reminiscent of the bori's release. but it falls flat because this isn't 2004, they are fully aware that there are people on the site who hoard resources and then use those resources to wall everyone else. so why they think events and avatars that REQUIRE a specific group of items that can be easily walled by malicious people will be fun and engaging is beyond me.
the varwolf's release wasn't even like. bad in an interesting way. there was no explosive meltdown or insane site drama. it's just frustrating and angering and highlights every problem i have with this site at once.
alright. after fighting for my life for the last two hours. here is my guide for the varwolf quest.
EDIT 11/27/2025: unfortunately this quest is not a multi-day release, you only get 4-5 map pieces from following this guide and have to obtain the rest from other means. cringe.
SPOILERS FOR THE VARWOLF QUEST BELOW THE CUT!!
(also sorry for few images to accompany my notes, the popups for this event do not reopen once you've closed them so make sure to take notes!)
the button on the home page doesn't bring you straight to the quest, you need to go to neovia and click on this cave on the map (it even has a pair of spooky yellow eyes when you hover over it)
this will take you to the hub page for the quest, the scary cave. you'll get some dialogue from pan almas, an archeologist investigating the legends of the haunted woods. he'll have three items for you to investigate, an apple, a rock, and a tambourine. clicking on each gives you flavor text about each and provides a hint of where to go.
APPLE:
to investigate the apple, go to the apple bobbing page. you'll receive a scary cave map piece when pan fishes it out of the barrel.
ROCK:
to investigate the rock, go to the forgotten graveyard. a ghost will ask you "what's the word for when something starts to get soft and squishy, and when mold starts to grow". the answer is ROT (or ROTTEN), and the ghost grants you a map piece for answering correctly.
TAMBOURINE:
to investigate the tambourine, go to the wanderer camp. gilly will ask you what you and pan are looking for. the answer is MAP, and gilly will grant you a map piece for answering correctly.
the trail will then go "cold", and returning to the scary cave will give you this dialogue from pan directing you to ask various NPCs around neopia for more clues.
TYRANNIAN BATTLEGROUND:
visiting the tyrannian battleground, you'll encounter professor lambert to ask him for further information. when he asks what you're looking for, the answer is HAUNTED WOODS LEGENDS. he does not grant you a map piece, but he does point you in the direction of the neovian printing press.
NEOVIAN PRINTING PRESS:
visiting the neovian printing press shop, willa wagtail grants you another scary cave map piece.
ALTADOR ARCHIVES:
visiting the altador archives, finneus does not grant you a map piece, but he does give you an additional name for the varwolf: the ferment forager. he then suggests that you might find out more by looking for a book about the ferment forager.
FAERIELAND BOOKSHOP:
visiting the faerieland bookshop by finneus' recommendation, the library faerie asks you what book you're looking for. the answer is FERMENT FORAGER, but she doesn't grant you a map piece.
BRIGHTVALE CASTLE:
visiting brightvale castle, king hagan offers to trade your wisdom for his. giving him any answer will convince him and he gives the advice that it takes many ingredients to make a feast, implying that you need to work with other neopians to find the rest of the map pieces. unfortunately, he is not one of those neopians because he doesn't grant you a map piece.
BRAIN TREE:
visiting the brain tree and completing a quest, he'll tell you plain and simple to search the haunted woods and provide further clues relating to decay and to cooking of some kind. he also doesn't grant you a map piece.
after this you should have 4-5 map pieces, depending on whether you got the popup dialogue at the beginning that grants you a map piece. from there you need to obtain the rest of the map pieces from other means, currently haunted woods hunt, the wheel of extravagance, and random events give them as item prizes.
after obtaining these pieces go to the treasure map page to turn them all in and receive the full map for the cave. venturing into the cave prompts you to lure out whatever's in there with something to eat.
COOKING:
the mysterious creature will only come out of hiding for one item: decaying pumpkin surprise. you can create this at the cooking pot with three items that are currently only available from haunted woods hunt and (very rarely) the spooky foods shop restock. the ingredients are hungry fungus, mound of rotten fruit, and putrid pumpkin.
once you have the decaying pumpkin surprise, return to the scary cave and make your way to a new area in the hollow grove.
you'll then be given the opportunity to create a varwolf in one of the four basic colors, red, blue, yellow, or green.
