I see this post floating around a lot. I appreciate ya'lls compliments very much! I would however like to remind you this isn't just a "cool neat thang" you can slap your "gender" on or whatever. Have fun, but please keep in mind this is our reality of war, it permeates our lives and leaves scars, both physical, virtual, mental. The tragedy is still ongoing. Please be mindful of that. Consider donating to myriads of relive funds of your choice, if you're able, At least stay informed and don't fall for propaganda, it's plenty distressing being in many online spaces as a ukranian today.

i did see a few very funny takes like "um people are only upset about the elves in da bc they wanted an oppressed minority to be unrealistically perfect 🙄 sorry sweetie that's not how the world works, victims can be imperfect or perpetrators too 🙄"

and i fear that that is incorrect. i have zero problems with the elves having some sort of circular intracommunity firing squad that sabotages them more than anything else. that's fair enough if that's the wordbuilding decision - i think sera and briala can hate the dalish more than they hate actual noble humans, and merrill can prioritize looking into a mirror over the city elves, abelas can be the physical embodiment of toxic historical nostalgia, etc, i support all their wrongs. if da4 had been about this, that is completely fine. it's maybe difficult to write well, but it's not like that had stopped them before hkfjdj. and it's at least an interesting premise.

my problem was that the writers themselves were racist in real life, and "let's kill one dalish clan per game, just for fun lol, and what if the church gets tons of sympathy while the dalish religion is Fake and Cringe and a symptom of their useless history-obsessed mindset," is not a good way to handle writing any sort of story, especially one relating to a topic like this.

and then, veilguard went further and unironically introduced pure unadulterated medieval european style racism, of Original Sin and Blood Theft and Plague Creation and Inherently Evil Polytheistic Religion onto the elves instead 😭

and also the thing is... maybe it's cheesy writing for there to be an unrealistically perfect oppressed group that has an entirely clear-cut moral high ground. ok sure! i agree, i love woes and problems and nuance in fiction, and i will accept this strawman argument that people were ever asking for unrealistic perfect martyrs with no unsympathetic traits.

but, even if that was the case... that's fine actually, haha?

if da ended up on the cheesy and sanitized writing level of "what if the slavery empire was Good and Democratically Reformable" and "catholicism is fine and never does anything worth mentioning <3", then why can't the oppressed groups get an equally cheesy YA-novel style of "they did a rebellion and it went 100% well bc they were so moral, and everyone clapped and changed their minds about racism immediately"? what makes that different? if it's optimistic and escapist, that should apply equally, right?

instead, they got something completely different, and far more insidious, which is: every single structure that is already in power, is fine. good, even.

the REAL causes of the problems are this one faction of people, who lived in ghettos, and had a banned religion and were conquered and displaced multiple times, and still live in slavery in huge numbers. in fact, even them Existing was a problem - they need to apologize and repent for their ancestral crimes and evil religion. they get no cultural depth or sympathy - forget being unrealistically "perfect" victims - it's no longer acknowledged that they did even suffer at all.

so, whose escapism is this? :)

I've donated to the UNICEF Ukraine campaign in the past, and the Red Cross, but I was wondering if there are any other charitable funds/initiatives that would benefit from international donations, but might not be readily on the radar of the international community? I've done a little bit of research on different charitable causes, but I want to ensure my money is going to the right places to best help affected communities!

two main tips:

donate to local ngos/fundraisers over big international orgs. there's a consensus here in ukraine that WCK is the only international humanitarian org that actually does shit, UN/ICRC in particular are known for being out of touch and ineffective (red cross ukraine might be better? haven't heard much about them). many ukrainian charities accept donations internationally, and if you follow ukrainian artists/creators/blogs on tumblr they will reliably be posting links to fundraisers they recommend every now and then

donating for humanitarian aid helps alleviate the symptoms, but donating for the ukrainian army helps treat the cause. ukraine's biggest fundraising orgs (come back alive, prytula foundation, sternenko fund) focus on supporting the army for a reason, and giving your money to them is always a good choice

another big one is united24, which is zelensky's initiative and lets you choose a cause you would like to donate for.

if humanitarian relief speaks to you more, bring kids back (also by zelensky) and save ukraine work to rescue the children trafficked to russia; proliska evacuates people from the combat zone; sylni supports sexual assault survivors; and here are some helpful posts i've reblogged in the past with more options, including some niche ones.
