As you can see it is amazing what water and cooler conditions do for plants. The first image is a deciduous agapanthus âBressingham Blueâ, the second is âHeritageârose, lolling over box, the third, the deep pink âDark Ladyâ with aster x frikartii âMonchâ and salvia x superba. Then yellow day lily, blue thistle echinops ritro and last plumbago âBlue Capeâ.

Bejaria racemosa is in the blueberry family Ericaceae. Commonly known s tarflower it is native to southern Georgia and Florida. Tarflower can be found growing in pine flatwoods and scrub habitats in acidic soils. This species gets its common name from the sticky sap that accumulates on the pedicel, flowers and fruits. In the past, tarflower was used as a flytrap inside houses because of this sticky exudate. Bejaria racemosa is also one of a few species that has heptamerous, or 7-petaled flowers.

Rhexia cubensis is in the family Melastomataceae. Commonly known as West Indian Meadowbeauty it is native to the Caribbean and the Southern United States. This species can be found in flatwoods, salt marshes, and pond margins where it flowers from spring through the fall. West Indian Meadowbeauty can be distinguished from other Rhexia species by the glandular hairs on the hypanthium of the flower.

This leguminous native European tree is called either âgolden chainâ or âgolden rain,â for the drooping racemes of pea-like blossoms that cover it in Springtime. Every part of the tree is poisonous to humans, but what it lacks in digestibility, it makes up for in beauty. Flowers give way to dangling seed pods in Autumn, and the smooth black bark gives Winter appeal. Seeds require scarification (ie. treatment in boiling water), followed by cold-stratification in order to germinate. Otherwise, they will take more than a year to emerge.

A fern is a member of a group of approximately 12,000 species[3] of vascular plants that reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. They differ from mosses by being vascular (i.e. having water-conducting vessels). They have stems and leaves, like other vascular plants. Most ferns have what are called fiddleheads that expand into fronds, which are each delicately divided.[4]
Leptosporangiate ferns (sometimes called true ferns) are by far the largest group, but ferns as defined here (ferns sensu lato) include horsetails, whisk ferns, marattioid ferns, and ophioglossoid ferns. This group may be referred to as monilophytes. The term pteridophyte traditionally refers to ferns plus a few other seedless vascular plants (see the classification section below), although some recent authors have used the term to refer strictly to the monilophytes.
Ferns first appear in the fossil record 360 million years ago in the late Devonian period[5] but many of the current families and species did not appear until roughly 145 million years ago in the early Cretaceous, after flowering plants came to dominate many environments. The fern Osmunda claytoniana is a paramount example of evolutionary stasis. Paleontological evidence indicates it has remained unchanged, even at the level of fossilized nuclei and chromosomes, for at least 180 million years.[6]
Ferns are not of major economic importance, but some are grown or gathered for food, as ornamental plants, for remediating contaminated soils, and have been the subject of research for their ability to remove some chemical pollutants from the air. Some are significant weeds. They also play a role in mythology, medicine, and art
Cyclamen hederifolium is one thing in Ontario, but Cyclamen coum is an even rarer floral beast in gardens in these parts (which is really saying something), though Cuddy Gardens does not surprise me for its unique/rare selection of plants, native or otherwise. I nearly missed this one while there, but during class I heard Pascoe asking Lucas about the Cyclamen in bloom in the gardens and my head turned to attention like a dog hearing âwanna treat?â lol. Apparently they thought they lost this one, as it had gotten too buried with mulch underneath the Magnolia tripetala trees and didnât come up last year. But it looks like it survived nonetheless! Iâd say âSomething Magicâ Cyclamen certainly lives up to its name, and catches my heart with itâs tiny little spring magic.

Rainbow Lewisa Mix The Rainbow Lewisia Mix is a sun-loving plant collection that is sure to dazzle your neighbors with the lovely mix of eye-popping colors. Lewisia plants have small rosettes that are an inch wide in a variety of summer colors including pretty purple and pink, orange, yellow, and white. Plant a bunch of these flowers on your landscaping project or keep them in small pots for controlled growth. These can also be planted together with other colorful plants to achieve a wide spread of color that will signify the presence of spring.
Creeping Red Sedum Creeping sedum (Sedum spurium) stretches the term "thrives on neglect" to its horticultural limits. Red-leaved creeping sedum cultivars "Red Carpet" and âDragonâs Blood" handle climates across U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 8. Four- to 6-inches high with 1- to 2-foot spreads, the succulent groundcovers deepen from greenish- or bronze-red in summer to crimson or rich burgundy in fall. Delicate, star-shaped mauve blossoms crown established "Dragon's Blood" plants in summer. "Red Carpet" produces less-reliable, but equally charming, deep-red flowers. Even first-time gardeners can successfully grow these drought-, pollution- and salt-tolerant plants with a minimum of effort.
