Miami Music Live

I'm pretty sure all that I write is in bravado, but please understand I am also the same person that aims to be the White Dress from Citizen Kane and is about to quote Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha: "Opinions mean nothing; they may be beautiful or ugly, clever or foolish, anyone can embrace or reject them." This is a blog of happenings around Miami, to be specific, happenings that I am interested in. I also like to throw in a little bit of Latin Music history and even a thing or two about popular Latin acts. What I'm trying to say is that this blog is mainly for Gringos(I use this as a term of endearment) interested in learning about music from Miami and Latin Music in general. Mayday! @ The Stage. $10 Cover. I always feel an electric rage when i watch them, so if you're in the mood for that, please go and do this! 

Suenalo @ The Clevelander. Another Miami Beach venue... not sure about this one, but the band is amazing, so you should definitely check it out. 

Afrobeta @ The Vagabond. Free before 11pm, so go and enjoy!!

ArtOfficial @ Jazid. Okay, if you are careless and missed the free show on Fri night you should definitely go here! Cover is $10 as per usual and I wish you luck on your parking search. 

Suenalo @ The Stage. Cover is $5 for this one, and it's a much better venue than... you know what, nevermind... This show is definitely reccomended. 

Novalima & Mr Pauer @ Pax. So Novalima is this Peruvian band that comes around about once a year. Their sound is... well there are definite Andean influences in there but there's also a lot of afro rhythms which give it that usual Latin Flava... Click here to get tickets for this

Prodigal Daughter Returns

I'm starting to feel like a neglectful mother that goes out partying for weeks and leaves her kids with her ever so loving and push-over of a mother. I completely bailed for three weeks, but I have good news to report. 

For the first time, ever, I was able to actually disconnect from the internet. That's right, we're talking about a full week without a 3G connection and even the mention of Wi-Fi. I'm very proud of this accomplishment. (Although I'm fully aware that it doesn't excuse three weeks worth of absence)

Anyway, let's pretend we're friends, and Happy New Year!! I wish Love for all of you, because that's the only thing you really need. If people love you you can bum off their prosperity... Just sayin'

Here's this weekend's breakdown:

Friday

Jahfe @ The Stage. Part of my travels took me to Jamaica, where I was able to see some sick Reggae musicians. However, I was proud of how Jahfe's sound held up against them. I mean most of the time I was thinking, "Wow, it's been so long since I've seen Jahfe, I need to see them soon." So get your butt over to The Stage, park under the overpass and pay the $10 cover and get your Reggae fill!

Suenalo @ Jazid. I also saw a man trying to play the conch shells when I was away. It was pathetic. I suggest that you leave it to the professionals. It'll be $10 and I don't have a password, sorry!! But good luck with the parking search. 

Conjunto Progreso & Los Herederos @ Pax. If you want your fill of Cuban nostalgia and flavor, you should go to Pax. Yes, they are now charging a cover, which sucks! But this is the only week where it will be cold so it will actually be nice to be inside this toasty place. Oh! and parking will be free, so you have that... 

Araka @ Tobacco Road. Roll the R when you say it and do it at a high pitch. Yep, it's more fun that way. Anyway, cover is only $5, but then again so is parking... Anywho, Araka always brings a party so do check them out if you feel like sticking around Brickell. 

Saturday

ArtOfficial @ Bougie's. Um... have I mentioned how awesome this band is?? The point is, you must be here and watch them and realize how amazing they are too. But if you don't get a chance, do not fuss, there is another show next week (See the Bonus). 

Elastic Bond & Mr. Pauer @ Pax. Mm... spicy sweetness!! That's the best way to describe Elastic Bond. This band will always make you happy and Dance. Also, Mr. Pauer brought back "La Murga" with a vengeance and for that, he deserves an award! Cover is $10 (I think) and parking is free!!

Kolabo & Araka @ Jazid. Two bands that remind of living in S. America and drinking with my cousins. You will dance and you will hear Spanish. Usual $10 cover, unfortunately I don't have a password. 

Community Property @Tobacco Road. I've seen Community Property twice by accident and every time I think they're amazing. Now I've committed them to memory and will be on my lookout list. For only $5 you get to see them and you get to enjoy the Foodtruck roundup at Tobacco Road, sounds like a deal to me... 

Bonus: Don't miss the free downtown concert next Saturday!! It has ArtOfficial, Jahfe & Afro Kumbe!!! All three great bands for the price of, well nothing! DWNTWN Miami Concert Series featuring Jake Elwood & the Blues Brothers Review. Free concert, downtown, under the stars... Yay!! 

Jahfé is at Jazid. Best band to see at Jazid, hands down. Well maybe LPJ too... but that's besides the point. There's nothing better than jamming to the sweet reggae sounds being made from Jahfe at Jazid. $10 cover and good luck parking. 

Spam All Stars at Pax. I'm still depressed that Pax is charging a cover... But Spam will certainly rock, so if you're looking for DJ Le Spam and his crew, this is the place to be. (

Oigo at Tobacco Road. This is a new band, I do not know them. However they are fronted by Adrian from Suénalo, and we all know they rock. So this might actually be pretty ballin... $5 cover

Jacob's Ladder, Radio Boxer & Arboles Libres at The Stage. Radio Boxer and Arboles Libres, I can honestly say I'm a fan of. Tonight you get the bonus of Jacob's ladder, which definitely sweetens the deal. I'm assuming cover is around $10.

Dodge Miami Latin Music Half Marathon!! This event spans Sat-Sun and it features ArtOfficial and Suenalo, so definitely check it out.

ArtOfficial at Jazid. This is the one thing I want to do this weekend. I can't get enough of how awesome this band is and I'm sure the close quarters of Jazid will definitely make the experience even more awesome. I don't have a password today... sorry but it's only $10, so just go!

Shegó mi cumple!

I know, I know, I bailed on this blog for two weeks, which is incredibly shitty of me. I don't really feel bad though... I've been having fun. But I'm back, because it's my birthday weekend and because it's BASEL TIME!!! 

Today I will be doing a breakdown of where the local bands will be playing, because there are a ton of bands coming in from out of town, and to be honest I haven't had time to really researched them all... So here you have it:

Friday

Elastic Bond at Pax. A little birdie told me that Pax charges cover now, this has never happened to me, but the bird is actually very reliable, so there may be a $10 cover. Still... Sophie's sweet, sweet voice (she's the lead singer of EB) is worth much more, so I suggest you go. Also, they will be releasing the video to "Frecuencia Natural," which is one of my favorite songs.

Bachaco at Jazid. These little cats are actually pretty good. Has the music goodness gotten to their heads?! Totally, but they're still good to drink and dance to. $10 cover and well wishes on parking. 

Conjunto Progreso at Tobacco Road. When all else fails you can always trust that Tobacco Road will be awesome and only $5. 

Moby at Bardot. Okay, I cheated, he's not local... but everyone knows Moby!! If you're a fan you already got tickets (they were like $40), if not this is the link to buy them. 

Saturday

Suenalo at Jazid. Okay, I had forgotten how awesome this band is, and then Spotify threw them into my face again. I haven't seen them in a while, but I'm sure they are still ridiculously fun to watch. Cover is $10, have fun in your parking search

Locos Por Juana at Pax. Sadly now there is a cover (my guess is $10) but!! There will be live art (thank you Art Basel) along with the goodness that is LPJ, so please go. I can't wait!! 

Tribute to Hector Lavoe (by Timba Swing) at Tobacco Road. Hector Lavoe was an fantastically talented Salsa singer in the 70s, but I mean this guy was incredible. Sadly because of AIDS complications he passed away in the early 90s. I never got to see him, but his music lived on through my family and I've learned to love him. I can honestly say I've gone to at least 10 tributes to him. I'm not sure how this one will be, but if El Cantante's spirit is there, I'm sure it will be great. Cover is only $5

There you have it. There are also a ton of gallery openings because of Art Basel, and you should go to all of those too... I will be there. And if you catch me (blue stripes in my hair should give it away), wish me a happy birthday and give me a hug. I love hugs...

Un millón de cosas!!

Honestly, it feels like crazy busyness hasn't stopped... So again I don't have time to think of something clever and instead I'm going straight to business.

It's that time of the month... (not that one!!!) where the Miami DDA brings you a free happy hour concert that is a good enough reason to ask your boss to leave early on a Friday... Head on over to the Tina Hills Pavillion at the Bayfront Park and rock out to Kaki King (think August Rush, you will get it once you see her perform) and Million Young. Rola Music Fest at Bayfront Park... Okay I haven't written about this before because I'm on the fence about it. I love music festivals, but I'm not sure having one right before thanksgiving is such a good idea. The price is actually relatively cheap for a full weekend ($90) and you do get to see Major Latin Acts (including the salsa master Oscar D' Leon, Singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas, and the unique Jarabe De Palo) but I'm not sure that I want to spend $90 so close to the holidays... Just sayin... Anyway, one day passes are $40. Today the theme is Salsa & Merengue. Click here for more details about the line up. 

Tobacco Road's 99th Anniversary party. The main act is Mayday, so you know this is going to be a good party... Cover is only $10 but if you're a veteran you get the hookup for wearing your uniform. Don't forget happy hr starts at 6 pm there will be $.99 drinks. Yep, that is less than one measly dollar (beware, this ends at 7:39pm). So go and celebrate the oldest bar in Miami or the fact that it's 11/11/11 or whatever, it's Miami you don't need an excuse to party. 

Jahfe is at Jazid. Usual $10 cover, I'm sure you won't have to pay it if you get there early enough (like before midnight). Go and enjoy the goodness of their reggae sounds.

The Stage Anniversary Party. Did you see how there are a bunch of festivals and anniversaries this weekend?? Yea, I caught that too. Well in this case it's their first anniversary, so it's still special because they're in the honeymoon stage. In this case this celebration is going on the whole weekend. Tonight they have ArtOffcial again, which may sound repetitive but the band is melt your face off good so I'm sure you will want to see them again. Rola Music Fest at Bayfront Park continues. The band to see today is Jarabe De Palo, I promise you will love it, even if you don't understand him. Click here for more details about the line up.

ArtOfficial at The Stage. This is a CD release party, which means you get to feel extra special and say you were there when their "Vitamins & Minerals" album dropped! Plus if for $10 you get an album and entry to the venue!! Please go!!! This band will blow your mind and I love them! 

Locos Por Juana at Pax. Fundraiser for La Fundacion Genesis, which helps homeless and handicapped children. For once there is a charge of $10 at Pax, but it goes to a good cause and you get to see the most amazing band. It is most definitely worth it!

Palo at Hoy Como Ayer. For a little nostalgia, hit up Hoy Como Ayer, iu wil fil like a tru Cuban! Cover is $10 and you get a free Mojito

Xperimento at The Stage. Feel like dancing some reggae cumbia?? I always do, so I'm thinking this is a good thing for you tonight.

Afro Kumbe at Pax. Do you like electro cumbia goodness but lack funds? Then worry no more. This is your place to be, no cover!

Suenalo at Jazid. This weekend I recommend you try the password "Cold Shot" before midnight. If it doesn't work, then who cares? Suenalo still rocks and it's only $10.

Suénalo playing at UM's Festival Miami. Not sure if you know this, but for the month of October (or so) the University of Miami puts on great shows every weekend. They bring musicians from all over the world to wow Miamian's with their prowess. Tonight, they've invited Suénalo, and although I've never thought of them as a band to watch in a theater, I am looking forward to actually enjoying every single detail of their musicianship... Tickets range from $15-$30 and you can buy them here.

Jahfé is at Jazid. Nothing beats great reggae... but I mean really great. I don't have a password but cover is only $10. Well wishes in your parking search!

Spam All Stars is at Cafeina Wynwood Lounge. I thought having LPJ at Cafeina would be weird, but it wasn't, it was AWESOME!  So I'm sure Spam will be to, go dance, drink & eat the $5 tapas until 9pm.

Saturday

Xperimento is playing at the North Beach Band Shell for Heart Beats for East Africa.  This show is to benefit the Prem Rawats foundation, which helps people around the world have their basic needs met. Show starts at 2 pm, tickets are $18 and you can find out more here.

Suénalo will be at Pax. You already know the deal, free everything and it will be nice and chilly so it's a good time to go!

My amazing favorite place in the world has apparently closed forever. This makes me ridiculously sad, I will miss the amazing murals in the patio, the amazing mirror in the bathroom and the insane amount of fun I had at that place.

Posting on Thursday because I don't trust myself on Fridays has to be some sort of guilt-trip/responsibility mix, right? Well that's what I'm gonna call it! Here you go:

Friday

You know when people complain that all the concerts that come down to Miami are super expensive? Well the Miami DDA is kind enough to have a DWNTWN Miami Concert Series at the Tina Hills Pavillion that is completely FREE!. Yep, all you have to do is show up and you can see three great bands: Spam All Stars, Ketchy Shuby & Surfer Blood. If you don't know Surfer Blood, well they hail from West Palm, and their sound is catchy & beachy. Don't forget to enjoy the yummy food from the food trucks!! Palo at Hoy Como Ayer. Nothing beats a good night of Latin Nostalgia, you'll feel like you're at a traditional Latin borrachera if you do this. I recommend you drink scotch on the rocks to feel legitimate, but if you say "PALO" as you enter you'll get a free mojito. Cover is $10.

Locos Por Juana at Cafeina Wynwood Lounge . This is actually an interesting mix, I always think of Cafeina as a nice place to have wine and tapas while chill music plays in the background which contrasts with Locos Por Juana's electrifying "get up and dance" energy. But I'm sure there will be room to get up and move.

Cleaveland Jones is at Le Cafe. As always, here's a relaxed option for you, I recommend a bottle of wine and good friends.

Big Brass + JUke at The Stage. Who are these Big Brass people?? None other than Keith Cooper ArtOfficial's saxophone and Ted Zimmerman from Spam rocking the trumpet. So image those dirty blues with a little punch! Mmm mm... Cover is $5 or $10, because last weekend I got charge $10 (which was annoying) but I promise it'll be a good time! JUke goes on at 11 so get there early.

Saturday

Calle 13 at The Plaza at the AAA. Calle 13 is not local per say, but they are crazy and Latin and awesome! The bonus is that this is an outdoors concert and you will be able to sweat, scream and dance in the warm Miami weather!! Click here for tickets.

ArtOfficial at Bougie's . So I've decided that I'm still not tired of telling people how amazing this band is, it is a shame that I keep meeting people who haven't heard of them. Anyway, go and enjoy them, it should be a bombtastic show.

Suenalo at Electric Pickle. I was just there watching a little private showcase and I forgot how many cool little knick-knacks are in the decor of this place. Cover is $10.

Fail!

I failed you last weekend... There were definitely good shows and things to do, but it was a long weekend, so as predicted in my Labor Day Weekend Post, I had a beer by 2pm and I was on vacation mode and for this I am Very Sorry!

So here's what went down last weekend.

Friday:

I went all the way to Miami Beach to see The Script in concert.

If you don't know who they are, here you go: They are a three piece band from Dublin that has mass appeal between ladies from 16-35, their sound is VERY POP and they are all absolutely adorable with their little Irish accents.

I was surprised to see groups of heterosexual men, that were not dragged by their girlfriends at the show. I mean I'm sure the guys that took ladies to this got some, but I'm confused as to why these (very) straight guys went by themselves... If the plan was to pick up ladies, I must confess you failed. At least in my case, I even found the guys that went with their woman to be pussy-whipped so I was turned off by the fact that they were there at all.

Back to the band. They rocked! I almost forgot how amazing is the show that these guys put on. They kept yelling out "Miami!" to the delight of the women in the audience and Danny (lead singer) kept all of their wrist-cutting-ballads as emotional as they could be. They did have a shining upbeat "Rusty Halo" which was a nice little change of pace, but for the most time, I sang at the top of my lungs while I remembered all the times my heart had been broken. (This happens a lot when you're as sensitive, I mean as crazy, as I am). After this, I called it a night, because I did start drinking at 1pm and I thought 10pm was a good time to stop.

Saturday:

Good ol' Sat came along with a nice dose of my hyperactivity, so I was ready to bounce off the walls as of 9 am. I'm not lying here... at 9 am I was listening to my "Dance in My Underwear" playlist and dancing. There was also a brief "Assasin's Creed" session and some organization of my room and closet, but I couldn't really sit still after that.

As soon as it was night time I got ready to see my fave Texan band Bright Light Social Hour at The Stage. I was very excited to yell "III NEEEEEEED YOUUUR LOOOOOVE" without looking like a crazy person, so I texted my two lovely friends to join along the madness. I also met a very nice Guatemalan that was amazing patient with my crazy dancing. The band came on around midnight and they performed 4 or 5 new tracks, which were all amazing, I only wish I had an album to memorize them.... The band opened with the ever recognizable "Shanty," and kept the excitement going by performing crowd favorites "Bare Hands, Bare Feet" and " Back and Forth."

After that, my fabulous new and old group of friends wondered over to Buck 15, where dancing madness ensued... It has pretty much been established that our last spot of every Sat night is going to be Buck 15, so to quote another frequent Buck 15er, "there is an 80% chance that we will see you next Sat night."

There you have it, last weekend's report... I promise to be good and post this weekend's upcoming hot events on Thurs!

I recently re-watched West Side Story and the songs are still lingering in my head... I also kept sighing over Tony and Maria, which has never happened before, but I think that's more of a personal issue...

Viernes Culturales bring you Lanzallamas Monofónica. Viernes Culturales(Cultural Fridays) happens the last Friday of every month along Calle 8 and it usually starts at 6:30pm. If you ever go you'll feel like Latin Culture (predominately Cuban in this case) has been sprayed all over the place, you can play dominoes, enjoy the amazing gastronomy & check out beautiful art inspired by or by Latin people. You can catch Lanzallamas in the Dominos Plaza.

Conjunto Progreso at Pax. By now you should know the bonuses of Pax, everything is free... Well, almost everything, not the booze, but you are already enjoying the free music and parking and it's not nice to abuse. Also, there's nothing like Conjunto to Salsa the night away.

Big Brass Band party at The Stage feat. Suénalo. This actually sounds like the most amazing event for the weekend. New Orleans' brassy goodness mixes with Miami's = Yes please! There will also be live painting and yummy food trucks. Cover is $10 after 10pm (You're not showing up any time before midnight, right?!)

Batuke Samba Funk at Bardot . In the mood for something more... um.. Brazilian? Because, let's face it, those people know how to shake it! If you've never danced Batukada before, just picture being electrocuted by a really sexy taser, it's fast and you must shake your hips... Cover at Bardot is the usual $10, and I hope to God that the people at the door are kind to you, otherwise let me know and I will bash them all over this blog!

ArtOfficial at Jazid. Pardon the redundancy, but this band rocks!! I can't believe how blessed Miami is to have such a talented group. Go to Jazid, get up close and sweaty with the band, I promise it is well worth your time, and the $10 cover.

Saturday

Cleaveland Jones at Blue Piano. Feel like starting the night off with a glass of wine? Then this is your place, music starts at 10 and I'm sure it will be a great pairing!

Big Brass Band party at The Stage feat. Locos Por Juana. Again, this is the most amazing event for the weekend. Only this time is up to LPJ to represent for Miami, and I'm sure they'll blow the roof off the place. Cover is $10 after 10pm, and if I hear that anyone got there before 12 I'm going to slap them.

Suénalo at Jazid. It's October, but that shouldn't matter, Miami is always steamy and so are the delicious songs from Suénalo. I send you good parking vibes, and take $10 for cover!
