Book of Painted Kosode Patterns, hand-painted album (17th century) During the 17th century in Japan, artists created hand-painted fashion catalogs to show off trendy designs for traditional Japanese robes, called kosode.

Each page showed a colorful pattern for the back of a robe, using popular seasonal symbols. These stylish layouts were uneven and decorated with shiny gold and silver.
