like everyone I am also always balancing on the small blade of not letting other people down
From Matthew Zapruder's "Poem for Ferlinghetti," in COME ON ALL YOU GHOSTS
Just an old fave.
OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO FOR JENNY LEWIS' JUST ONE OF THE GUYS, featuring Kristen Stewart, Brie Larson and Anne Hathaway.
This idea of urban exploration and the emotional marking of physical spaces calls to mind the concept of psychogeography, defined by Guy Debord as âthe study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals.â
And I canât talk about psychogeography without talking about the French tradition of the flaneur/flaneuse, the stroller, the saunterer, or the derive, that is, a playful, aimless exploration of a city on foot, the conscious act of drifting.
In Paris, my friends and IÂ were drifting. We had come from college or jobs or other responsibilities in the United States that we would return to. It seemed to me that we were putting off our adult lives, and I didnât know what to do with my in-between year. So I walked epic distances in inappropriate footwear. My relative poverty and confusion about the future became the impetus for exploring the city on foot, for devoting entire afternoons to wandering with my friends, unconsciously expressing our feeling of being unmoored with our bodies and our movements.
ALL OF THE APPLAUSE FOR THIS
Male Writer: Ah, anniversary jokes are so funny. Because chicks always hate it when you don't remember anniversaries! A plus gold very original
Male Writer: Mother in laws amirite?
Male Writer: My male character who is an author insert of myself pines after a woman I used to pine after in high school. Then they have sex. This is good literature.
Male Writer: Ugh female books are so romance filled
Male Writer: And girl fanfics, so mary suey
Male Writer: Now listen about this original middle aged man who is an expert in everything, suffers from ennui, looks like me, acts like me, and gets all the girls i want.
Male Writer: She was sexy in an alluring, boring way, filled with purple prose and riddled with objectification
Male Writer: If i make a female character parrot my misogynistic views, they cease to be misogynistic! Are you saying you don't respect my fake female characters opinions, feminists?
Male Writer: a good action girl is one who looks hot at all times
Male Writer: If the female main character got in an asskicking line, my work is Feminist with a capital F and no one can criticize me
Specifically White Male Writer: Heroic tropes are so overdone. I'm going to create a boring white guy with stubble to be a completely original antihero no one has ever seen before TM.
Same Guy: It's original because he is a jerk who gets away with bad behavior, just like I wish i could.
Another Specifically White Male Writer: It's in my universe to only have white men do things in my book. I mean, don't you care about historical accuracy
Same Guy: I mean, it's a generic fantasy verse with no real life time period equivalent and i haven't done any research, but i'm SURE that it's historically accurate. To that dark mideval dragon fighting europe period
Same Guy: Where in Europe? Who cares!
Male Writer: There is no better way to introduce a female character to a male character than by him saving her.
Male Writer: Characters hating each other is good sexual tension!
Male Writer: One female character and five male characters is a good team balance
Male Writer: If my female character chooses to act in a sexist tropey way, it's not sexist. In fact, because she CHOSE to do it, it is Feminist.
Male Writer: I am original

Before Sunrise (1995) - Directed by Richard Linklater
"Find the writing routine that works for you. As much as it pains me to say it, I will never be one of those writers that gets up at 6:30 a.m. to write. There are very few things I genuinely hate, and getting up early is all of them. If I had my druthers, the world would run on a 10-6 schedule. So instead of trying â and failing â to do something that doesnât work for me at all, I write in coffee shops after work. I go straight to my favorite one on the way home. I turn off my phone. I read a little. Then I write and revise for a glorious interruption-free hour. By the time I get home, Iâm ready to eat dinner and watch Orphan Black guilt-free, because Iâve already gotten in my writing for the day. The trick is to find out what works for you, and then to commit to doing that thing."
On how to be full-time dedicated to writing when you're full-time employed doing something else.
How Britney Spears went to Vegas and became a feminist role model. No, really.
"Its message is that nothing comes easily, that you canât keep your kids in private school and your community gated and your ex-husband in his nation-building ambitions without work. Britney isnât the fuck-up we decided she was during a relatively short but well-publicized period of her life. She drops off her kids and picks them up from school just about every day. She shows up on time, hits every mark, is polite and soft-spoken. She rehearses five or six hours every day, saying, 'Letâs run through it one more time." Britney works."
"I brainstormed what the Bechdel Test might look like if we expanded it to acknowledge some of filmâs most tired antifeminist tropes. In my feminist killjoy dreams, hereâs what an expanded Bechdel Test might look like:
The film contains at least two female characters.
They have names.
(First, middle, and last.)
They talk to each other about themselves.
The film acknowledges the existence of queer people, without turning them into caricatures or playing into stereotypes.
The film acknowledges the existence of people of color, without turning them into caricatures or playing into stereotypes.
The film acknowledges that multiple body shapes, sizes, and types exist, without turning those who are not a size zero into caricatures or playing into stereotypes.
The film acknowledges the existence of women who do not hate their bodies.
The film acknowledges that sometimes women wear clothes.
The film acknowledges that women eat and drink.
The film acknowledges that sometimes women play sports.
The film acknowledges that sometimes women understand technology.
The film acknowledges the existence of platonic relationships between people of the opposite sex.
The film does not include the word frenemy."

This weekend, I slept in a haunted castle.
"This weekend, I slept in a haunted castle. It was one of those decisions you only make when you haphazardly decide that if you are going to spend a 3-day weekend reading Game of Thrones, you should probably at least spend it reading Game of Thrones somewhere that isnât your apartment. This is how I ended up talking my boyfriend into driving us from Seattle to the Olympic Peninsula in a car loaded with camping gear we had no clear plan to use and no reservations, our sights set on Port Townsend, a Victorian seaside town within driving distance from the Pacific coast, a temperate rainforest, and the economically depressed ex-logging city made famous by Stephenie Meyerâs abstinence parable, Twilight."
