What I would look like if I was a prominent S. Carolina criminal lawyer for 20 plus years BUT was also currently on trial for murdering my wife & son (and probably the house keeper in 2018). And, in 2021 I hired my opioid dealer to fatally shoot me for the life insurance payout but somehow the bullet only grazed my brain and I’m fine. I’ve also admitted to embezzling millions of dollars from innocent people and have been disbarred which is pretty amazing considering someone from my family has controlled the South Carolina 14th Circuit Court for the last 84 years. Excerpted from my sister Kristy’s post about our family trip to Ukraine in 1997: “In 1997, after years of genealogical research, my Dad, our Kosta Fearless Leader, took his immediate and some extended family to find our ancestors. First to the Czech Republic, then Slovakia, on to Poland and alas, the path led us to Ukraine and a small village in the Carpathian mountain range. We found family who looked exactly like my grandmother, who was with us (she’s in the white shirt). We drove a rickety bus to a village, we had a driver and a translator. My brothers had to help move a broken down car out of the one lane dirt road. (The three of them literally lifted it out of the way). We met our ancestors and saw the house my great (?) grandmother grew up in. Our new family invited us to the highest point of their village and we had potatoes cooked in the earth, some kind of meat and an alcohol was passed around that burned your eyes out. The new family all went to their houses and put on their best blouses and a man with not very many teeth played the harmonica. It was lovely. What I learned was that of the 7 languages our translator spoke- none of them quite translated perfectly, and I learned how similar we are- they danced like us, cried like us, and loved Michael Jordan.” I was 17 and was getting ready to go play tennis at U of Illinois. There was another 17 year old kid/man there and he was literally tilling the land with a hoe when we arrived. I guess this makes me 1/16 Ukrainian (?). Either way, a special memory and moment.
