Eddie Munson has no concept of personal space like at all He’s always leaning on Steve. Draped over him during movie nights. Throwing an arm around his shoulders to point at something in his notebook. And Steve Harrington who grew up in a big empty house where his parents barely hugged him, shortcircuits every time.
“Personal space, Munson”” he always muttered but he never actually moves away.
But one day it happened Eddie gets a call Corroded Coffin booked their first real gig outside of Hawkins. He screams and drops the phone and launches himself at Steve. Full body hug. Arms and legs and excited babbling. And Steve’s supposed to push him off. Make a joke or something but Instead he freezes. Then melts. Arms come up slow and wrap around Eddie’s waist. Bury his face in Eddie’s neck. He breathes in. And doesn’t want to let go. And of corse Eddie notices. And pulls back an inch. “You okay there, big boy?”
Steve’s honest before he can stop himself: “Can we stay like this a little longer?”
Eddie’s eyes go soft. “Yeah, Stevie We can.”
That’s how it starts.
“Cuddling for science,” Eddie calls it first.
And soon it’s every movie night. Eddie curled into Steve’s side, Steve’s arm around him, fingers carding through Eddie’s hair because Eddie sighs all pretty when he does.
You have to have a job to make money. You have to have money to go to Europe. You have to have a job to make money. You have to -
Robin keeps telling herself this.
She repeats it when she's cold. She repeats it when her feet hurt. She repeats it when the nautical music playing over the speaker starts permeating her dreams. She repeats it incredibly hard when she goes into the back of Scoops Ahoy for her lunch break and five minutes into it -
"I need you to cover."
Her food isn't even finished heating up in the microwave, "I’m on br-"
"I need you to cover," Steve says, not even stopping in his stride across the room and out the back into the hallway.
"Un-fucking-believable."
She almost doesn't. She almost sits her ass down and eats her lunch but, "You need to have a job to make money. You need money to go to Europe."
She abandons her lunch and walks to the front. Her frown twists in disgust, "What can I get you?"
"Not gonna take me for a sail on an ocean of flavor, sweetheart?"
Robin raises an unimpressed eyebrow and states, "You're smudging the glass, Hargrove. What do you want?"
"Where'd Harrington scurry off to?"
"I recommend USS Butterscotch," She states. "It's a big hit with Neanderthals."
"Harrington is-"
"We don't allow loitering," She talks over him. "If you're not ordering than you need to leave before I have to call mall security. You don't want that because Greg - the mall security officer - he hates being called because the, you know. Lack of air conditioning. Puts him in a bad mood and-
"Okay," Billy says, already annoyed by her yapping. She keeps talking until, "Okay! I’m leaving. Tell Harrington that I'll see him around."
Robin watches him go.
She frowns.
Her eyes dart around the mostly-empty shop and then she pushes off the counter. She goes into the back, past her lunch cooling in the microwave, through the door.
She doesn't have to go far to find Steve.
He's sitting on the ground with his elbows rested on his knees. His hands in his hair. He's breathing in a familiar way, measured and intentional.
Robin slides down the wall beside him.
She stares ahead.
She chews on her bottom lip and thinks to say something but - they're not really friends. They're barely coworkers. They started two weeks ago so...
"He tried to kill me."
"What?"
"Hargrove," Steve clarifies to the wall in front of them. "Last year with, you know. The fight. He was. Yeah, he probably would've killed me if - and."
He tugs on his hair, takes a deep breath, "He's such a dick. I hate dealing with him."
Robin watches Steve stand up. She watches him brush off his clothes and say like nothing bad has ever happened, "Thanks for covering. I owe you one, Buckley."
Steve keeps letting himself into the wrong apartment because he’s drunk and his key’s under the mat and left vs right is hard at night. Unfortunately for Eddie Munson, his apartment is the one on the left. At first, Eddie’s freaked out coming home from an overnight shift to find a stranger on his couch. Then he realizes it’s just his attractive new neighbor. After the third break in Eddie stops trying to shove Steve out the door and just throws a blanket over him instead. It was supposed to be a one time thing. It wasn’t.
Fic where Steve's dad finds out about the Russian torture but not the upside down because Steve 'don't talk to cops without a lawyer' Harrington and Robin 'be honest, what really happened to JFK?' Buckley won't tell the FBI what happened to them without a lawyer despite the fact that-
"You're not being arrested," The agent in front of them repeats for the hundredth time. "You're not being interrogated. This isn't an interrogation. It's an interview. We're gathering information on what happened tonight."
"That's what I'd say if I was interrogating someone," Steve shrugs. He turns to Robin and says, "That's how they get you."
"We're not trying to 'get you,' we-"
"They want to frame up for the mall burning down," Robin accuses. "You think you're so smart with your mind tricks. Well, we solved a Russian code with-"
"Robin."
"Oh," She's stops. Narrows her eyes. "Tricky."
"You already told us about the - what did you call it? The Mind Flayer."
"The flesh monster."
"Yes."
"We signed an NDA about upside down bullshit already so we talked about it. This is different. Duh."
Robin echoes, "Duh."
"Okay," The agent says. "Just tell up what happened when you were underground and-"
"Not without a lawyer."
The agent sighs.
The agent thinks they should've went to nursing school like their mother wanted.
The agent thinks the lord above that Mr Harrington and Miss Buckley's lawyer - Mr Harrington (father) - finally finished filling out his paperwork.
Steve's father looks pissed right up until he sees his son beaten half to hell. He opens his mouth to ask what the fuck happened when Steve turns to the agent.
"My dad-lawyer is here," He announces. "We can tell you about the torture now.."
I think Rocky named Grace ‘Dumbass’ or ‘Idiot’ or something and then just never changed it. Then when they get to Erid he’s so used to calling his alien friend ‘Shithead Moron’ that when he introduces him to a large crowd they’re all like ‘woah man what the fuck’ and ‘that’s not nice!’ and ‘you can’t say that bro that’s too mean’ and Rocky has to awkwardly explain to Grace why they’re upset. Grace, who is now very familiar with Rocky’s standard vocabulary, laughs until he is crying on the floor and can’t breath, which makes all the other Eridians panic while Rocky stands there yelling at Grace that it’s not that funny asshole.
Steve pauses in the doorway of Tommy's bedroom, his backpack halfway off his shoulders. His eyes narrow as he frowns, "Why not? I said I was comin' over."
"Yeah, but that was before Mom got mad," Tommy sighs dramatically. "She's mad at everyone and she said she doesn't want to hear a peep from us until Dad gets home. No one is allowed to leave their room."
Steve's frown deepens.
"But!" Tommy jumps. "You should talk to her!"
"Why?"
"Because you're never in trouble," He replies. "You can tell Mom that I'm sorry and it wasn't my fault. It's Tyler's fault. Or Theo's 'cause he's the oldest. Or Travis', just not mine."
Steve frowns more.
He gets in trouble all the time at home and at school but...his mom doesn't talk to him either when she's mad at him and he hates it.
He's gotten pretty good at making it up to her so, "I'll try to fix it."
"Awesome," Tommy cheers. "Remember, it wasn't my fault. I just pushed him. I didn't break the wall."
Steve slides his backpack off his shoulders the rest of the way and digs around for what he needs inside before heading back downstairs. He follows the sound of Tommy's mom to the dining room where she stood in front of a head-sized hole in the wall, "Hi, Miss Maria."
"Hi, Stevie," She says, not sounding particularly angry. "I didn't hear you come in."
"It's 'cause I’m like a ninja," He says."I got you something. It's a present. From Tommy."
He presents her - "A rock?"
"It's a lucky rock," Steve informs her. "The weird kid at the park that bites m- Tommy says that it has good luck magic. He says that there's not a lot of magic in the world no more so you have to be real careful who you share it with when you find some."
"The weird kid said that he's got a lot of good luck already," Steve continues. "So he gave me - I mean, Tommy - this magic rock. He said you have to carry it with you all the time and if you squeeze it real tight, it'll steal your sad away. That's good 'cause you don't want to be sad anyways."
He pauses and adds, "Now I'm giving - I mean, Tommy is giving you the magic. As a present 'cause he's sorry and he loves you. Do you like it?"
"This is a very nice rock and a very thoughtful gift," She says. "I think it was really nice of your friend to give it to you, Steve. I think you should keep it."
"But - but it's a present," Steve says. "It's a present from Tommy so you stop being mad at him."
"Steve, I’m not-"
"Take it."
"I’m not go-"
"Take my stupid rock and stop being mad at Tommy!" Steve snaps. "Stop ignoring him! It hurts people's feelings when their mama ignores them and-"
"Hey," Maria says firmly. "Steve, I’m not ignoring Tommy. I’m not ignoring anyone. I sent the boys to their rooms so they could think about their actions and to calm down."
"I’m not happy that they damaged the wall," She concedes. "One of them could have gotten hurt and we're lucky that they didn't, but I’m not mad at them. I’m disappointed."
"That's worse!" Steve complains, scrubbing at his dry eyes. "Tommy said you told him not to leave 'til Mr David got here."
"That's true," She says. "When Mr David comes home, we're going to discuss their punishment."
"What if he doesn't come home for a long time?" Steve asks. "What if Tommy had to stay in his room all by himself forever? He's gonna get hungry."
"Mr David will be home in fifteen minutes, hon," She assures. "I wouldn't make them stay in there all day otherwise. Is that something that happens at your house?"
"I don't want Tommy to get punished."
"Me neither," She admits. "But there are consequences to our actions and sometimes the consequences aren't very fun but they're necessary. They teach us not to do things that can hurt us."
She gestures Steve over to her. He comes easily, allowing her to pick him up into a hug. She presses a kiss to the top of his head and asks, "What kind of punishment do you think my boys should get?"
"I dunno," Steve shrugs. "Just don't take their allowance away."
"Deal," She says, feeling a little unease at the request. She pushes the concern to the side for now with a hum and asks, "You think I can fix this hole?"
El escapes the lab and runs into Steve who's just minding his own business and was on his way to a social event, but he's not about to leave this traumatised little girl who can barely speak out on her own.
He tries to get her to go with him to the hospital or the police station or even just his parents place so he can call someone for her but she shakes her head and drags him back towards the lab to sneak as many of the kids out as possible.
Steve doesn't even know how it happened but one second he was laser focused on getting Nancy Wheeler to come to a party at his place some day and the next he's being looked up to and relied on by a whole bunch of kids who could very easily kill him if they wanted to. But they don't want to, he knows that. He is probably one of the first people in their lives to see that they're all scared, lost and confused. Not dangerous, not monsters. Just children.
In barely any time at all the Harrington place has become a safe haven for children with superpowers and he's doing increasingly suspicious shopping hauls to make sure he has all of their comfort items as well as the essentials or falling asleep in class and tripping over his own feet in gym because he was up comforting some of the kids after they had night terrors the night before.
Countless expensive items of furniture belonging to his parents, grandparents and great grandparents have been accidentally destroyed but he doesn't care because it's all ugly anyway. He does wish some of them would stop accidentally broadcasting top secret phone calls over the kitchen radio though because he's not entirely certain it won't be traced back to them somehow.
Hopper drops by one day because the neighbours called about suspicious activity only to find the very kids he's discovered military personnel snooping around their town in search of all under the Harringtons' roof. All fiercely protective of Steve Harrington and vice versa if Steve wielding a metal coat stand at him like a weapon the second he answered the door was anything to go by.
"Kid, put that thing down and get inside!" he whispers sharply in way of a greeting. Later, when they're in the kitchen talking, Hopper tells him off for being too quick to attack. "What were you even thinking, Steve? I'm the chief of police. You're lucky I didn't just shoot you on the spot for attempting to assault an officer."
"No," El says, from the doorway where she was listening in. She levitates Hopper's gun out of the holster and turning it mid air to point straight at his face. "You're the lucky one. Steve protects us."
"Okay, it's okay. I'm fine see?" Steve shows her. "Let's not threaten to shoot people at the kitchen table because my parents will go nuclear if blood stains get on anything in here."
Hopper looks at him with wide eyes and says. "Steve, you're clearly in over your head here."
"Tell me about it," Steve sighs, but then his head snaps up like he immediately regrets admitting to that. "Please don't take them away though. And please don't tell those scientist people where they are. I can take care of it, I promise. I just need more time to adjust. I- They're just kids and those people are hurting them in that lab Hopper, please."
Hopper calms him down and tells him it's alright and he's not going to do any of that. He wants to keep the kids safe too, but they need to be smarter about it and find a more secure location and a way to get supplies and let the kids use their powers in a safe way without drawing attention of anyone who might want to hurt them.
They end up running a secret home for children with supernatural powers who were freed from experimentation and pretty much any outcasts who would protect them. El cannot be cooped up for too long and wanders off a lot so that definitely includes the party once she bumps into them by chance one day.
Once they've established roles and a plan, they start to go back to the lab in small groups/pairs to try and rescue more kids. They also check out locations where it's rumoured there may be more of these labs. Sometimes they only manage to find files but recently Steve and Dustin found someone.
He's in his late teens, a little older than Steve. He's clearly been there a long time and is clearly terrified, although they aren't sure if it's of the scientists or his own powers. When Steve first reaches out to help him stand, it's like he's shocked Steve is offering for him to take his hand. He quickly backs further into the wall with these big wild frightened brown eyes like an animal being cornered and Steve feels helpless for a brief moment, but he reminds himself how long it took some of the others to trust anyone.
In a hoarse whisper from a voice that sounds like it doesn't get used a lot, the other boy simply says, "Don't."
Steve stops immediately, offers what he hopes is a kind, reassuring smile and backs up a little to give him space. “Okay. I won’t touch you. I just... what should I call you?”
The boy’s eyes are observant, calculating.
“…Eddie,” he says finally.
"Alright, Eddie. We're here to get you out." Steve says as calmly as possible.
Eddie shakes his head firmly.
"I can't leave," he says, "and you have to go before they come back."
"We can't do that," Dustin argues. "Stop being a stubborn idiot and get up so we can rescue you."
Steve rubs his temples and sighs as he thinks about how Dustin really needs to learn even just the tiniest bit of tact.
"It's safer for everyone if I'm in here," the boy explains, defeated.
"Bullshit," Dustin replies. "They're trying to turn you into a weapon. How is that safe for anyone?"
"Just go," Eddie snaps. His eyes flicker orange for a millisecond, barely there, but Steve catches it.
It's a test, he's trying to prove to himself that he doesn't deserve to be rescued, that the people who've been torturing him in this place for God knows how long were right about him. It hurts less to believe it's safer for everyone if he stays locked away than it would to try to fight back, try to challenge that idea and fail.
Steve holds a hand up to stop Dustin from saying whatever he has prepared to say next.
"You aren't going to hurt us," he says, his voice firm with the confidence of someone who has zero doubt that what they're saying is true. "Whatever they've told you about who you are, it's all lies. You're not the monster here. They are."
Eddie laughs. It’s sharp and broken, like the sound surprises him as much as anyone else.
“You don’t know that,” he says. His hands curl into fists, knuckles white. “You don’t know what happens. What they've made me do in here."
"Try us," Dustin challenges, his arms folded across his chest.
The air shifts.
Eddie’s breath stutters.
The heat comes first rolling off him in waves. Fire crawls along his arms, blooming from his skin in uneven bursts. He hisses through clenched teeth, shoulders curling inward.
Steve sees the skin of his arms flush immediately. Angry pink, spreading fast.
“Hey,” Steve says, sharp now. “Stop, you're hurting yourself.”
Eddie laughs, brittle. The fire snaps out.
For half a second, there’s nothing. Then a metal filing cabinet in the corner begins to glow, crimson bleeding through grey and slowly growing brighter. Heat radiates from it and turns the air in the cramped room thicker.
That explains why there's barely anything in the way of furniture, Steve thinks.
"They figured I was no use if it was hurting me so they trained me to harm other things with it instead." Eddie explains.
Steve swallows. He's not scared, he’s furious.
“They did the same thing to some of the others,” he says quietly.
Eddie’s head snaps up.
“Others?”
“Yeah.” Steve nods. “Kids. Younger than you. Some can move things. Some can hear stuff they shouldn’t. We’ve lost three lamps and a microwave just this week.”
Dustin snorts. “Four lamps.”
"Okay. Four," Steve says.
"My friend El flipped a van once just by nodding her head," Dustin chimes in with a bright, proud smile. "She's awesome."
Steve slowly turns to give Dustin a look that says 'you're not helping'. Eddie looks at him like he's spoken in an alien language.
“The point is,” Steve says gently, “you’re not alone. We've got this place, somewhere peaceful and well hidden. It's safe there."
Eddie stares at him like he’s trying to see through the words.
“Safe,” he repeats, flat. Skeptical.
“Safe,” Steve says again, softer this time. “Messy. Loud. Kind of falling apart at the seams, honestly. But safe.”
The faint glow in the room dims further, heat bleeding out of the air until Steve can breathe normally again. Eddie’s shoulders sag, just a little, like he’s been holding himself rigid for so long he’s forgotten what it feels like to loosen.
“I can't always control it.” Eddie says quietly.
“That's okay,” Steve replies, no hesitation. “We'll figure it out together.”
He takes a careful step closer, slow enough that Eddie can tell he’s doing it on purpose. Not crowding. Just present.
“You don’t have to decide anything right now,” Steve says. “We’re not dragging you out. If you say no, we leave. That’s it.”
Dustin frowns but doesn’t argue.
“But,” Steve continues, “if you want to come with us? There’s a room waiting. You can lock the door. You can stay up all night. You can not talk for weeks if you want. Nobody’s going to make you prove anything.”
Eddie’s hands tremble. He presses them together, fingers digging into his palms like he’s afraid of what they might do on their own.
“They’ll come looking for me,” he says.
“We know,” Steve answers. “If they want you, they'll have to get through all of us first.”
Silence stretches between them, thick and heavy.
Finally, Eddie pushes himself up from the wall. His knees wobble, but he stays standing. The lights flicker once, just once, then steady.
He takes a step toward Steve.
Stops.
Steve doesn’t move.
Eddie swallows hard. His eyes flick to Steve’s hand, hanging loose at his side, and then back to his face.
Firefighter Steve Harrington is called in with his team to help out a guy who cuffed himself to his bed and now can't free himself.
It's not the first time they get a call like that, but Steve gets the air knocked out of his lungs once they arrive at the guy's room because, Jesus Christ, that's his high school crush, Eddie Munson, right there, cuffed to the bed.
No, but you don't understand. I keep thinking about this scenario and like, Steve recognizes Eddie right away, and of course Eddie also recognizes Steve too. But Steve's team doesn't know about Eddie, or that he was Steve's crush all through high school.
So Hopper, Steve's captain, asks him to take the vibrator out of Eddie so they can turn that thing off because otherwise they'd have to do their work while it's still inside and buzzing and making everything even more awkward than it already is.
And Steve can't say no because what the hell is he even going to say? "Sorry, cap, but I've been crushing on this man since I was a teenager, so can't you ask someone else?"
Yeah, that won't do.
So Steve swallows dryly around the lump lodged in his throat, and positions himself between Eddie's legs, apologizes profusely as he parts his legs apart a little further so he can grip the base of the vibrator and pull it out.
Eddie's red all the way down to his chest, from mortification but also arousal because, holy shit, Steve Harrington is in full firefighter gear and it feels like a fucking wet dream and a horrible nightmare were mixed together into a single surreal experience Eddie never thought he would go through.
The nightmare side of it all ends up being greater than the rest when Steve finally pulls the vibrator out and Eddie shivers and cums with a strangled, pained moan.
Eddie closes his eyes immediately in shame and a few tears start to leak out from under his wet lashes and Steve can't look away, he clicks his teeth when he realizes his mouth is agape and his jaw starts ticking with the tension.
Hopper gets red in the face and decides Steve's got this, and hands him the bolt cutters muttering a "be out in the truck when you're done here" and quietly leaves the apartment.
It was just him and Steve in the fire/ems truck their small town has for the Fire Chief (not the full rig, seeing as this was just a quick rescue/assist, not a full medical/fire emergency).
Steve has to swallow hard three times and he's finally spurred into action when a small whimper starts coming from Eddie, like he's about to go into a full blown sobbing panic.
"Don't worry, I've got you. It's just you and me now Eddie. No worries. I'll have you out of these things in no time." Steve puts a knee on the bed and reaches over Eddie quickly to cut the chain on the cuff furthest from him.
Eddie peeks one eye open when he feels the bed shift under Steve's weight but quickly slams it closed again with a groan at the sight of Firefighter Steve in his firefighter pants and boots, held up over his torso with those wide strapped suspenders over a tight blue T shirt with the Hawkins Firehouse Crest over his left breast clinging to his bulky torso- and they are breasts, 'Gotta be at least a C cup, wow!'- hovering over his naked, trapped body.
"Wait!" Eddie almost shouts, startling Steve before he can make the cut.
Steve immediately backs off, worried he's scared Eddie. He leans back, but doesn't take his knee off the bed.
"Hey, it's okay, I'm just gonna cut the chain so we can get your arms loose, then we'll worry about getting the cuffs off your wrist." Steve tries to reassure him. Steve is trying his damndest to be professional here, but he really wants to reach out and caress Eddie's flank to try and calm him with a touch. He remembers Eddie being a pretty touchy guy with his friend group in high school, always hanging off of someone, throwing his long arms around a neck, or play fighting with the boys. Steve had always imagined Eddie would be very responsive to his touch.
Steve needs to focus.
"No, no, it's not- I just." Eddie sighs, scrunches his eyes tight one time really hard before he finally gets the courage to open them, hoping the tears are under control again for now. He's embarrassed enough, he doesn't need to go into a full meltdown to throw the cherry on top of the most embarrassing experience of his entire life. "Can you just get the keys? I'm sorry. These cuffs are kind of... Well they're expensive and you'd think after this experience I'd probably want to destroy them and never see them again, but uh-" Eddie shakes his head a little and finally lets his eyes move from the corner of the ceiling he had been staring into to make eye contact with Steve.
It was a mistake. Steve is so god damned beautiful. The years since high school had really been kind to this man. Eddie's old teenage crush was now clearly filled out and bulked up and had a little scruff coming in after a day or two of not shaving. He looked like a wet dream, a pin up calendar guy for the hottest month of the year.
Eddie's spent dick twitched.
Eddie groaned and crossed his legs involuntarily, trying to stop his dick from getting hard again and hide his shame from Steve.
Steve looked down at the movement and sat back on his heel, shifting his weight. His professional veneer cracked a little and he stared at Eddie's dick coming back to life before his eyes.
Eddie's eyes widened as he watched Steve sit back and take full stock of the situation. He licked his lips. Steve had just looked at his hardening dick and licked his lips.
Eddie wasn't going to be able to stop the flow of blood, he was going to be fully erect in about two seconds if he didn't get the hell out of here right now.
He was mortified.
And that had him hardening even faster.
Eddie coughed and Steve was broken from whatever thoughts had him losing his goddamn mind and watching Eddie's erection grow instead of helping.
"Oh, right, yeah- oh- okay." Steve stood up and turned around, hands on his hips, surveying the room to look for the keys- and to hide that he was starting to sweat from the heat of the blood rushing to his face. Thank God for the thick pants hiding where else the blood was rushing to.
"They're over there, the guy I was- well that asshole threw them in the corner, I-I think I s-saw them land in that pile of clothes." Eddie stuttered. His body was starting to shiver uncontrollably. He was afraid the tears would start up again any second, he could feel his chest getting tight and a sob forming around the lump in his throat.
"Okay, yeah, here we go!" Steve grabbed the keys off the top of a small pile of clothes, it looked like some black jeans, a jacket and- yep, those were black silk boxers, wow. Steve cataloguing all these new details he was learning about Eddie for later, they would really come in handy when he took an extremely long shower after he was done here.
His shift was supposed to be over hours ago, but he'd stuck around the station to talk to Hopper, and had been standing outside the firehouse when he'd pulled up in his truck. Hopper had been grooming Steve to be the new Fire Chief when he eventually retired because he didn't trust any of the other older guys that had been around longer. In Hopper's words, "Kid, you've got a good head on your shoulders. Those old fucks don't really understand the responsibility, they just want the title and the power, but this is ultimately about community service, and I can see you take that seriously." Then the call came in, and Hopper told Steve to get in so they could finish their conversation on the way.
Steve needed to get it together, Hopper trusted him not to abuse his power- Hell, he trusted him enough to leave him alone to handle this situation and give this poor guy some privacy and dignity. He can't be sitting here fantasizing about someone when he's supposed to be here to help.
Steve shook the keys, triumphantly presenting them to Eddie, the chime of the tinkling metal bringing him back to the present moment.
"Let's get you free." Steve quickly unlocked the first cuff, letting Eddie's hand fall to the pillow atop his wild curls scattered about his head.
Eddie groaned in relief, squeezing his hand into a fist and pulsing it a few times to help the blood start to flow again. His entire arm felt numb.
Steve made quick work of the other cuff and Eddie couldn't hold back another groan. Steve jumped back up off the bed as soon as Eddie was fully free and he placed the keys gently on the bedside table.
"Okay, how are you feeling? Do you need medical attention?" Steve tried to put his professional brain back into gear, and he could see that Eddie was struggling to shift his arms, his hands pumping weakly to try and get feeling back.
"I think I'll be okay, my arms are just sore. Just need to get the blood pumping again. Thanks. And I'm sorry you had t-to uh, to see this. Eddie weakly gestured to the mess all over his chest and stomach. He immediately felt like an idiot as he drew attention to his naked torso and the cum still wet and pooling in his belly button.
Steve licked his lips again.
Eddie groaned, hiding his face in the crook of his elbow.
"P-please can you grab me that towel on the back of the chair?" Eddie rasped in a near whisper, his red face heating up his forearm as he hid from Steve, blindly pointing to the chair by the door that held the towel from his shower earlier before his grindr date showed up. He should have known playing with a stranger was a very bad idea.
Eddie jumped when he felt the towel running gently down his chest. Steve was wiping away the mess himself.
"Don't worry about it, honestly, you might be surprised, but this isn't the most compromising position I've had to help someone out of." Steve said softly as he continued to clean Eddie up. Steve's mouth was so dry, his voice came out a little raspy too, but kind and calm.
"You don't have to do that, I- I- oh fuck!" Eddie croaked behind his arm, his other slamming down onto the bed beside him, trying to find purchase as Steve had moved the towel lower, gently cleaning his lower belly, just above his bright red and painfully hard dick, a spurt of pre-cum added to the mess as he twitched and he aborted the roll his hips unconsciously started.
"Oh, yeah, s-sorry. I thought- I don't know what I was thinking, here." Steve gently draped the towel over Eddie's hips, and Eddie hissed as it connected with his sensitive dick. Steve swallowed hard again and looked to Eddie's face, still hiding behind his arm.
Eddie sat up and let his weak arms fall into his lap to try and hide what they both knew was under the towel, his chin to his chest, his bouncy curls flopped around his face, barely hiding the wince as his shoulders burned with the new position.
"How can I help? Do you need some water?" Steve was finding he was reluctant to leave Eddie like this, though he knew he'd done what he was called to do, his job here was technically finished.
"Uh yeah, sure, I've got a glass on the bathroom counter actually." Eddie felt Steve's calm voice relaxing him, but he couldn't stop the tremors and it showed in his voice. He really wanted to find a hole and crawl into it, but he also really didn't want Steve to leave and this be the end of this whole scenario. The last thing he wanted was to continue this cringe nightmare fuel but he also kind of never wanted it to end.
Every new wave of embarrassment was rocking through him like the aftershock of an earth shattering orgasm, and edging him closer to another one.
Steve returned with the glass of water, reaching to hand it to Eddie, but he seemed lost in his head. Eddie slowly looked up at the small noise Steve made with his throat to gain his attention. Steve saw how dilated Eddie's pupils were, almost blocking out the brown around the edge completely, and his shoulders were shivering.
Eddie tried to reach for the glass but his hands were shaking so hard, Steve didn't let go when he finally made his fingers close around it. He helped Eddie guide it to his mouth and take a few sips.
"Harrington, you need help in there?" Hopper shattered the quiet, making Eddie jump and sputter on his last sip, as his voice squawked over Steve's radio.
Steve put the glass down on the side table and unclipped his radio off his pants.
"All good, Hop. Actually, you can go on back to the station, my shift is already over, and I'm going to go to Robin's from here- she lives in the next building in this complex." Steve sounded assured.
"Steve." Hopper ground out, disapproval clear in his gruffness.
"Jim. I know Eddie, we're good. I'm gonna help him get steady, and then I'm gonna go crash at Robin's." Steve asserted, not liking the implications that he was doing something untoward. Though, he very much was thinking about all the untoward things he could have been doing with his very hot, much more heavily tattooed (and more lithe-and-fit than lanky-and-awkward as he remembered) subject of his teenage bi-awakening fantasies.
"Alright, see you in 48." Hopper sighed through the radio. He trusted Steve.
"You don't have to, I'm fine really." Eddie reached for the blanket that was balled up and had fell off the foot of the bed. Steve turned just in time to see Eddie's bare ass in the air as he held the towel to his erection and got on his knees to reach for the blanket.
"Eddie," Steve groaned at the sight before him, Eddie plopped back down, crossing his legs under him as he threw the comforter around him like a cape and then wrapped it around himself tight to finally hide his naked form. Eddie shivered from his head to his curled toes at the low grumble in Steve's voice as he'd called his name.
He wanted to hear Steve say his name like that while he was holding him down over his lap and squirming away from his hand smacking his ass over and over.
Oops, Eddie did not need any more fuel for the fire burning in his belly right now. Now's not the time to be fantasizing about being punished by Hot Firefighter Daddy Steve.
"Eddie, you were just left handcuffed to your bed by some asshole, I'm not leaving until I know you're not gonna drop. You need some aftercare, and if you're not comfortable with me here, then we can call someone else to stay with you, but you're clearly not okay right now, you're shaking." Steve sat at the foot of the bed and put a hand on Eddie's knee over the blanket.
'Well someone seems suspiciously well informed about responsible kink play.' Eddie thought, but what came out of his mouth was-
"Yes, Sir." Eddie looked up through his lashes, a little smirk ticking up the corner of his lips.
Steve's grip tightened on Eddie's knee before he snatched his hand back and ran it through his hair, disheveling it artfully.
Eddie sighed and flopped over, curling his body up under the blanket, his hair fluffing over his face as he groaned in embarrassment at his own behavior.
"I don't think I'm shaking because I'm dropping, I'm shaking because my body doesn't think the scene is over yet," Eddie huffed, turned his face into the mattress and muttered under his breath, "God, what a time to find out I have a humiliation kink to add to the list."
Steve heard it even though it was muffled, and he couldn't help but laugh at Eddie's dramatics, making Eddie's gut explode with butterflies at the sound and his further humiliation. His dick was throbbing, he felt like he could come untouched again just at the sound of Steve laughing at him.
God he was so pathetic.
"I'm fine Steve, you can go to your girlfriend's, I'll just roll a blunt and go take a hot bath. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to come on to you, you're just here doing your job and I'm sexually harassing you. Please don't sue me."
"Robin's not my girlfriend, I'm off the clock, and it's not harassment if it's welcome." Steve laughed again, and reached over to grab Eddie's toe and give it a firm shake, the only thing sticking out of the ball of blanket besides his head, but that was now too far away to reach, unfortunately, or Steve might have run his hand over Eddie's curls soothingly.
Eddie definitely would have cum then. He was panting a little just at the contact with Eddie's big toe, as Steve calmed and consoled him through his humiliation boner. Wait, had he just insinuated-
Jesus, what a time to be alive.
"You're not repulsed?" Eddie whined. Oops. He needed to get his shit together right now, and stop groaning and panting and whining at Steve.
"Yes, actually, I'm fucking repulsed and horrified-" Eddie sobbed as his dick spurt another heavy glob of pre-cum into the towel still covering him under the blanket, "-that some jackoff would be so irresponsible as to leave you helpless and handcuffed to your bed in the middle of a scene. If you tell me who he is, I know a guy who knows a guy who can burn down his house." Steve's angry voice lowered in pitch as he threatened the guy who hurt Eddie.
"Fuuuuuck." Eddie came again, shaking through it, tremors rocking him so hard he shook the bed as he convulsed.
"Eddie did you just-?" Steve grabbed Eddie's calf and rubbed soothingly, as he worked through the after quake.
"Yeah, I guess humiliation and pretty boys threatening arson in my honor does it for me." Eddie sighed through an exhausted laugh- too exhausted to be embarrassed, and too high to feel ashamed.
"Woah-aaoaah!" Eddie yelled as he was scooped up, blanket and all and lifted into the air. Steve's biceps bulged as he gripped Eddie tight to his chest and carried him carefully into the bathroom. He set him down on the counter and turned to the tub, running the tap hot.
"What are you doing?" Eddie slurred, wide eyed, stars popping in his vision as he watched Steve pull his suspenders down over his shoulders to fall around his hips.
"Scene's over. Now I'm going to get you in that bath to get cleaned up, and when we're finished, I'm gonna roll you back up in that blanket burrito and carry you out to the couch to cuddle. I might even roll you that blunt if you're good. Maybe order us some pizza, what do you like on yours?"
"Mushroom, onion, and pineapple." Eddie muttered through his shock, his tongue feeling lazy, his eyelids drooping.
"You really are a freak, huh, Munson?" Steve giggled and Eddie kicked at him and missed with a-
Steve, a barista, looks up at the sound of the bell over the door and - "No. Hell no, absolutely not. Get out of here. Scram!"
Robin, also a barista, watches as this guy in a red scarf turns on his heel and leaves looking confused and dejected. She turns to Steve and asks, "Who's that? What did they do?"
"That guy?" Steve asks. "I have no idea who that is. Never meet him before."
"...Why'd you kick him out?"
"Wanted to," Steve shrugs. "Honestly, I didn't think he'd listen."
Robin is just, "...?"
Five minutes later Eddie walks in, orders his usual, and sits down to wait for his date - a guy in one of his classes who always wears a red scarf.
A minute ticks by, then another, and then - "Hey, mind if I sit with you while I’m on break. It's a bit crowded everywhere else."
The cafe is mostly empty but Eddie is pretty sure he got stood up and this cute barista is well, cute so - "Sure."
"Cool," Steve smiles. "Have you tried these muffins? I actually made them and, uh. Bought two of them...by accident. Want one?"
He lost a little steam there in the middle but recovered by the end, Steve thinks because Eddie smiles at him and accepts one of the muffins.
"I was supposed to meet someone," Eddie tells him at the end of Steve's lunch break. "Glad I didn't."
Thinking more about Steve's parents giving him an allowance with the expectation that he uses it to buy food while they're out of town, but never giving a clear time frame on when they'd be back.
It's impossible to budget a finite amount of money for an indeterminate amount of time. Especially when you're five. Especially when a bad grade gets it taken away.
There's a lot of trail and error, a lot of hungry nights, and many years spent unconsciously building safety nets.
The Hagans were a safety net.
Steve's not even really aware of how many times he's stayed over and ate dinner with Tommy's family or how many times he brought leftovers home to an empty fridge.
He vaguely knows that every time he hangs out with Carol at her house that he'll stay for dinner. Carol's mom loves baking and is always on a diet, she needs Steve to them finish off the dessert or to take it with him.
But he abandons those nets though, they're probably still there.
The friendship is over and he cannot be the guy he used to be so he cannot go back.
When his calc grade drops to a C and his allowance is cut in half, all he wants to do is spend time with Nancy. He names the gnawing feeling in his gut longing, and he lingers at Nancy's house to sate it.
When Karen invites him to stay for dinner, he agrees.
He breaks up with Nancy, or she breaks up with him. He doesn't know. Two concussions in less than a year makes him feel like he's permanently underwater, and it's fine that he has a D in English. It's fine that his wallet is empty. He feels queasy all the time anyways so -
"My mom wants you to come for dinner."
"Huh?"
"My mom," Dustin repeats slowly. "Wants you. To come. To dinner."
Steve swallows a mouthful of water, "Why?"
"She thinks you're too thin," Dustin shrugs. "Also I told her that you're gonna drive me to Snowball so she's probably going to interrogate you."
Steve falls from the top of the popularity ladder, hits every rung face first on the way down, and has no one to sit with at lunch so...
"No."
"What do you mean no?"
"I mean, no," Steve says, opening his locker. "No thanks. Go away."
Steve Harrington looks like someone tried to kick his face into the back of his skull. He looks like he can't take a deep breath without getting a glimpse of the afterlife, and yet. He's saying - "No. No??? No thanks, he says. I asked if you wanted to sit at my table at lunch and you say no? What the fuck does that mean?"
"That's a great grasp on the English language," Steve says, hobbling off to eat lunch alone. "I can see why you're repeating senior year."
"Dick."
All anyone can talk about the next day is how Steve is no longer on the basketball team. Eddie asks again because, "It's prime real estate, right there. At the best table in town."
"You think the best table in town is a wobbly cafeteria table that's permanently sticky?"
"I meant to eat at."
"The best table in town is in this school?" Steve clarifies. "Not at like, Enzo's?"
"Sit at my table during lunch."
"Sure," Steve says easily and then goes to eat in his car.
The next day, he's not at lunch. The day after that, he's not at school. Back in his car the following day, and then - "Get your ass off my hood, Munson."
"Come sit at my table," He demands, not moving from the hood of the car. "You're not better than us and you have no friends. Those are the only qualifications you need so let's go."
Steve doesn't bother to give him a response, just unlocks his car and slowly, very slowly lowers down into the driver's seat. He's speaking through his teeth in a pain-laced voice, "Do I look like I need friends, Munson?"
"Yeah."
Steve rolls his eyes, "Wasn't aware you hated the friends you have."
"I don't-"
"Because otherwise, it's pretty shitty that you're trying to make them targets by inviting me to hang around," Steve says. "In fact, maybe you should thanking me that I’m taking all the loser attention off you and your...loser friends."
Eddie tilts his head, let's what Steve said settle between them, and then grins, "Awe."
"You care about us," Eddie coos. "Steve Harrington: Nerd Protector. You're trying to keep us safe, cute."
Steve doesn't respond.
That title is weirdly accurate and he doesn't know how he feels about it so, "Get out of here."
"Sure, Harrington."
The next day, Steve walks out to the car with his lunch and...There are four nerds hanging around his car.
"Told the guys why you're being difficult," Eddie says when he gets closer. "We voted on it and you lost. Welcome to Hellfire."
He's a freshman in high school and this nice drug dealer guy is showing him how to smoke a joint so he doesn't beef it in front of all his friends, and...he's kinda cute.
And then Steve kisses him.
And Eddie kisses back.
And they're making out at a random table in the woods until - "Whoa."
"You okay?"
"Sorry," Steve says. "Sorry, man. I'm actually going to do the whole gay thing - bi thing? I think I still like girls - in a couple of years. I want to be popular first."
"...We can still do this if you're in the closet. I can keep a secret."
"I’m not in the closet. I’m just going to be - whatever I am later."
Eddie is just, "... You're scheduling being gay?"
Steve thinks about it and, "...Yes."
"You can't do that."
"Um, yeah I can. Free country."
"What," Eddie starts and stops. He takes a breath and asks, "Do you have 'be a homosexual' penciled in your calendar four years from now?"
"I don't think they make multi-year calendars like that."
Because that's the only issue with this conversation, not pushing your gay awakening down the road. Eddie can't even point out that all of this is absurd because Steve is just like, fingerguns, "Anyways, if you're free in a couple years, hit me up."
"For what, a meeting on the gay agenda?"
"Or to make out," Steve shrugs as he packs up his stuff. "You're a good kisser. See ya, Munson."
Eddie doesn't hit Steve up.
And then Steve shows up after the Upside Down tries to eat them with an old planner like, "Hey, man. I think we have a meeting."
Wayne Munson's six year old menace of a nephew asks over Hopper's right shoulder, hovering so close that the kneeling man can smell the pond water on the kid.
Hopper ignores it.
He focuses on the sniffling five year old in front of him with the wood splintered in his hand. He doesn't point out that this is exactly why he tells him not to climb trees. Instead, Hopper breathes in, readjusts the tweezers in his hand, and then breathe out slowly, "You ready, kid."?"
Steve sniffles. He nods.
"You have a bird on your shirt," Eddie points out as Hopper starts the painful process. "You must really like birds."
"I do," Steve says, painful tears in his voice as he tries hard not to cry. "I-it's a pelican. Grandpa Otis got it for me in Florida."
"That's cool!"
"Uh-huh," Steve nods. "My favorite animal is a monkey 'cause they have hands and - and they hug each other, and eat fruit with their feet and they live in trees."
"You're kinda like a monkey."
"I know," He rubs his eyes. "I-I wish I was a monkey right now. They don't get splinters."
"You know a lot about monkeys," Eddie says. "Do you know a bunch of stuff about a bunch of animals?"
"Yeah," Steve nods. "I watch tv shows about animals and I remember what they say sometimes, and - and sometimes I go to the library. They got a lot of books about animals and I look at them. Sometimes Miss Sophie - she works there - helps me read the books."
"That's cool," Eddie says. "I’m older than you so I read my own books. I know some facts about animals, wanna hear them?"
"Yeah."
"Do you know why flamingos lift one leg in the air?"
Steve shakes his head.
"It's 'cause if they lift both, they'd fall down."
Eddie grins in the following silence and then grins more when Steve starts giggling. He's got another joke but-
"There you go."
Steve looks down at his now bandaged hand in surprise, at Hopper, and then back at Eddie, "You distracted me!"
this is the moment he realizes his lie actually might work, and instead of feeling relieved, he’s probably just terrified, because the one person closest to him, the one who always saw right through him seemingly doesn’t anymore
