What a difference a few moments make. The sun had risen and was casting a halo on the mountain and started to light up the morning sky. We landed in Banff Friday evening and it wasn’t long before we had hit up @stjamesgateirishpub for a few pints of Guinness and some fireball shots. Needless to say getting up at 5am the following morning to capture the sunrise was a little challenging…but I pulled up my big boy pants and headed out into the dark and cold foggy morning. Mount Norquay Viewpoint for most of the morning was covered in cloud and I was ready to walk away but then…it emerged!!! There are no words to how I am feeling right now. It’s been a journey to say the least. Most of the time people just see the final image but not the journey in which it takes to achieve moments like this. I’ve been doing lots of homework as I venture into landscape photography and I was extremely worried and stressed that I would trip at the final hurdle. I booked with @banffphotoworkshops to help me line up all my preparations and I have to say I couldn’t have done it without the help of not only my family and friends but @danibanff. Her guidance and knowledge was second to none. What a journey to get this shot, and not the one I was hoping for. I was hoping for that cotton Candy sunrise like the previous day but it wasn’t to be. 4:30am wake up call, followed by a 2hr drive, followed by a 30minute hike at times in knee height snow drifts. It was pitch black and no headlamp I managed to find my way to this little gem only to be disappointed by the early morning glow and lack thereof. It was a windy enough day, so much so that I had serious doubts about even throwing the drone up. Fear that a gust of wind would reach out, pluck it from my control and take it into the wilderness where a manhunt for my new toy would ensue. As this had happened to me previously on a trip up to clear lake the odds were high, but my curiosity to see what this little beast could handle was higher. Brokenhead Wetland Trail is a 1.7 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Manitoba, Canada that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. Pisew Falls, one of the ‘7 Wonders of Manitoba’, is located in a provincial park roughly 150 km northeast of Wekusko Falls. The hike to Kwasitchewan Falls starts at Pisew and runs a total distance of 22 km there and back. There are backcountry campsites and a pit toilet available at Kwasitchewan, but they afford little luxury. Pisew Falls Provincial Park Here the Grass River drops 13 m/42.7 ft., changes direction and jets down through a gorge. A short boardwalk leads to observation platforms overlooking Pisew Falls. Another 0.5 km/.3 mi. trail leads to the Rotary Bridge over the Grass River below Pisew Falls. The bridge gives access to a 22 km. (return) hiking trail leading down-river to Kwasitchewan Falls, Manitoba's highest. Drones maiden voyage to capture some images. We’re up north and had pulled over on the side of the highway to take a leak and I decided to throw up the drone to see what was out there. I didn’t get too adventurous due to high winds (in fear of losing in thick bush) but we got some shots. Sunrise this morning and my first outing doing “proper” landscape photography. Such a learning curve. Fujifilm XT3 18mm 1 sec at F16 ISO 160. I didn’t yield as many shots as I would have liked and overall not a great sunrise coupled with the haze from the forrest fires. However we shall revisit.
