I've been drawing a lot of anthropomorphic characters lately to diversify my portfolio. For these two pieces, I wanted to “experiment” with shapes and lines. I opted for rounder shapes and thicker lines than usual to really make the characters and world they occupy feel as childlike as possible. It was cool seeing how my art looks like with this shape language, but I definitely feel like crisper and sharper shapes/lines are more my style. It's nice to have this in the back of my mind whenever I think it's thematically relevant for any particular project, though.

I also thought I'd be the type of illustrator who uses more subdued, almost dull colours, because I often find myself gawking at illustrations that do. The more I colour and discover myself through art, the more I gravitate towards brighter colours. I'm still a novice at colour theory in general, though. I really want to be sharper with my colour choices instead of just doing things intuitively. I hope to make an effort to really apply myself academically with this part of art soon.

P.s. I referenced children's art in the second piece. They are masters! I truly love how children interpret the world around them. I wonder how I can incorporate their “philosophies” so to speak, in my style. I think there's something, or a lot of things, I can learn 🥹

A little collection for my personal project, Lucky Fish. I have soooooo many personal projects, and I realise that I haven't finished any of them (story-wise). I hop from world to world. Character to character—that I end up deprived of the joy and pride that comes with a completed project.

With that, I've decided to commit to one. Lucky Fish will have to be on hold for now, but I'm grateful that I got to spend time with it. I learnt a lot about colours, shape language, lines. I learnt a lot about story and translating memories.

I’ll definitely come back to this one in the future, but it’s time to apply these lessons to another world, and see it all the way through. 🎣🍀
