i've been thinking about elias ever since learning about his "job" as an airline pilot in waves of love act i. he himself acknowledges that he wouldn't always be home, and i wonder what it would be like for the woman waiting for him. imagine that after days away, after crossing countless skies and cities, the first thing he would do upon returning home would be to look for her. perhaps he would apologize for missing dinner again, or for arriving home a day too late — after their wedding anniversary had already passed, or even after his own birthday had come and gone.

and yet, i don't think he would ever allow those absences to go unanswered. elias strikes me as the kind of man who would spend every waking moment trying to make up for lost time. a hand resting on hers while she speaks, a quiet kiss pressed to her forehead before bed, flowers brought home without occasion, simply because he knows he hasn't been there enough.

for a little while, everything would feel normal again. the house would feel full. she would have him beside her, and perhaps that alone would be enough.

but morning would always come eventually.

she would wake to an empty space on the other side of the bed, the faint trace of his cologne lingering in the room, and a message waiting on her phone:

"take care, dear heart."
