TOMBOY (2011) dir. Céline Sciamma Ten-year-old Laure’s family relocates to a new apartment. With cropped hair and outfits consisting of shorts and T-shirts being the norm for Laure, new neighbour Lisa assumes Laure is a boy and so Laure takes this opportunity for gender exploration and assumes the name Mikaël. As it turns out, Mikaël has a confidence that eludes Laure, and the boy is soon adopted and admired by Lisa and the local youngsters. (link in title)

Tomboy (Céline Sciamma, 2011)

I don’t know of a more loving film than this. It seems like this should be required viewing for every parent - or just everyone. Not just because of the important gender and trans issues it addresses, but because I’ve rarely seen a film that captures so vibrantly how it feels to be a child in general and how it feels to be a child with feelings and desires you don’t know how to express in particular. So many kids are harmed so badly because their parents and teachers and peers don’t give them space to figure out who they are. Or, if they’ve figured out who they are, they reject or mock or assault them. That is so much the reality of the world of queer and trans kids that I was anxious through my whole first viewing of this that Laure would be hurt or injured. Fortunately, everything turns out okay.

Sciamma is a master storyteller. She has packed a tremendous amount of feeling and information into a film that is less than 90 minutes long and that has a high number of scenes that move slowly and lack dialogue or overt action. I love so much that the first three scenes of the film are devoted to showing Laure interacting affectionately with each member of her family: riding in the car with her dad and then sitting on his lap and steering as they approach their new house; greeting her sister and then cuddling and chatting on her bed; greeting her mom, touching her pregnant belly, and cuddling some more. 

The majority of the cast is children, and they all incredible. It seems like an act of magic that Ms. Sciamma was able to get so many talented and totally natural children together to tell this story - especially Zoé Héran as Laure/Mickäel, Malonn Lévana as her sister Jeanne, and Jeanne Disson as her friend Lisa. They are all perfect.

Like Naissance des pieuvres (Birth of the Octopuses), this film vibrates with the sensations of summer. The colors and sounds are rich, and everything moves with the pace of endless sunny days stretching out ahead. There are troubles and conflicts, but this story ends with its hero knowing that her family loves and accepts her and that she hasn’t lost her good friend. Céline Sciamma is so good at telling stories that are very realistic and honest about how people and the world are while still being fiercely protective of her characters. This is one of the best movies ever.

Thinking about Ryan Gosling's best characters...lonely men loving women who aren't real.

Bladerunner 2049.

Joi is not real. Officer K is rejected by society, and to cope with the loneliness he buys a Joi AI. In their love scene, Joi superimposes her image over a sex worker, Mariette, in order to give him the illusion that they are able to have physical intimacy but this is still not the real thing.

Joi's backup is destroyed, and the next time he sees her, she is an advertisement. He is confronted by the truth of what Joi is; an artificial companion, a commodity, and she is not a real girl.

Lars and The Real Girl.

Bianca is not real. Lars is lonely and dysfunctional, so crippled by his anxiety that he can't interact with people, not even his family. He buys a sex doll and has the delusion that she is a real woman. He treats her like a girlfriend although the relationship is never consummated physically.

Drive (2011)

I would argue that Irene isn't real, in the fact that she barely speaks and is more like an idealized idea of a woman. Perfect and not real. She is inaccessible because she 'belongs' to someone else. The relationship is never able to be physical, it never becomes more than an idea. The Driver makes decisions for/about her without her input. It's like she is a doll.

The Driver is an outsider, in this case he is drifting from apartment to apartment with no connection keeping him in one place. He loves Irene but it is chaste, unable to become physical just like Lars with Bianca and K with Joi.

The Nice Guys

Since Holland March's wife is dead, she is no longer physically available. He has become an alcoholic to cope with the pain of loving someone who isn't there. His wife is out of his reach now, he can't touch her, she can't love him back. It's clear from the bathtub scene that he is lonely...he fell asleep in a tub and there is no-one to take care of him. Even his daughter is distant from him.

ANYWAYYY our boy Ryan plays a lot of sad roles and he does it really well and I love Sad Ryan and I want to hug him. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk 😮‍💨

so I finished watching narcos a few weeks ago and have obviously fallen in love with javier peña and felt compelled to make a post about how much of a good man he is and HOW HE IS A GOOD PERSON AND A SOFTY DEEP DOWN I SWEAR -

Idk people like to write him off as an asshole but there’s so much more to him than that - he’s a very complex character
