While this is an interpretation I used to subscribe to, over the years I've come to dislike the idea that Midna's early treatment of Link involved dehumanising him, hitting him, and being repeatedly harsh and cruel towards him in ways that aren't at all productive to the pursuit of her goal, when in the original game, she actually motivates him to do what she wants by making it clear that she is his only hope of saving his friends: that's why she plants the idea in his head that he'd find them in the forest temple. That's why she won't let you continue your search for Ilia until you get the second fused shadow from Death Mountain. It's the kind of manipulation that does require empathy and seeing the humanity in the person you're trying to manipulate, and I think that's a far more interesting and nuanced gateway for Midna to challenge her beliefs than "He was really kind to her even though she treated him like a dog" because it spreads this idea that you can "fix" your abusers by being nice enough. To me, that's a really surface-level reading of their complex dynamic.

Midna using Link's desire to save his friends to motivate him to get the fused shadows also means that after Ilia is safe and the last of the twilight is cleared, Midna has no more leverage over Link, besides her claim that the whole tragedy of the twilight invasion would repeat itself, which Link has reason to doubt: not only has Midna lied to him before to get him to fetch the first fused shadow, but he'd also just received a vision from Lanayru showing that even he, the chosen hero, is not above the fused shadows' corruptive influence, and therefore he's left wondering if it's a good idea to hand that power over to someone who doesn't have the best opinion of his people or homeland.

That means that when Link decides to go after the final fused shadow anyway, when she has no meaningful leverage over him, when he has every reason to distrust her, that is the moment in which Link wins Midna over, because she sees that he is a man of his word, who will do things for others even if there's a very likely chance that they might betray him.

So when Zant confronts them both in Lanayru Spring after, when she's given the choice to side with Zant and survive or side with Link and potentially die, of course Midna is going to take the same risk for Link that he took for her. Of course she's going to choose him, even if it would be her end.
