I love this. I think the pause is the most overlooked part of any art- whether it’s visual space, a hold on a phrase of music or dance, space between words and action in scene, or that breath-held beat in a paragraph or line of dialogue.

Every time I see someone say something like “id like to connect with my jewish heritage but I don’t think I can make myself believe” I want to be like

“The magical thing about judaism is… You don’t have to Believe anything…..”

Which is an overstatement of the facts. I would be a bad community ambassador. However, here is the sum total of my religious beliefs:

- it’s good to treat people like people

- learning things is fun especially if you then talk about them with other people

- the universe is amazing

- the jewish people have an ancient and enduring history and that’s also amazing

Literally during multiple services at my (middle of the road, Conservative) synagogue the rabbis have said things like, “God, if you believe in God” or “however you relate to the concept of God”

like, they know there are atheists/agnostics/whatevs at shul. we’re supposed to be there! feature, not a bug

Two Rabbis argued late into the night about the existence of God, and, using strong arguments from the scriptures, ended up indisputably disproving His existence. The next day, one Rabbi was surprised to see the other walking into the Shul for morning services.

“I thought we had agreed there was no God,” he said.

“Yes, what does that have to do with it?” replied the other.

I’ve had a problem with this since before my bat mitzvah. I never really felt a connection with a higher power, and kind of felt guilty about it for the longest time.

I was being raised Jewish (Reform, still Jewish), went to shul and Sunday school. Had my bat mitzvah when I was 12, and all that time I was going through the motions, feeling obligated to believe in god because that’s what other people believed.

And then I went to college and realized, fuck that noise. I can be culturally Jewish, honor the holidays, the commandments, the customs, and still not believe in god. And when I told my dad, who is a deep believer in god and Judaism (despite being a scientist himself) he was okay with it, which was a huge burden off my shoulders already.

Even now I don’t eat pork or shellfish (except when I’m trying new foods or there’s literally nothing else to eat) and celebrate holidays when I can.

tl;dr, It’s okay to not believe in god - or whatever “god” means to you - and still participate in the religious culture of your faith.
