The first time you see Grace again after starting at UConn, it’s in a hotel hallway.

Neutral ground. Early season. Different teams, different schedules — same building for one night.

She texts you:

You push it with two fingers.

Grace is sitting on the edge of the bed, hoodie on, phone in her hands like she’s trying not to check it every five seconds.

She looks up immediately.

Her face softening as soon as her eyes land on you.

“Hey.”

It’s quiet.

Familiar.

Like nothing’s changed.

You close the door behind you, heart already doing too much.

“Hi.”

For a second, neither of you moves.

Then Grace stands.

It’s not rushed.

Not dramatic.

She just steps into your space like she belongs there — like she always has.

Her hand finds your waist first.

Yours finds her hoodie.

And then she’s kissing you.

It’s not rushed.

It’s not desperate.

It’s just right.

Like Muscle Memory.

Like home.

Grace pulls back just enough to rest her forehead against yours.

“You’re real,” she murmurs.

You laugh softly. “God, I hope so... otherwise your gonna look like weirdo kissing a hallucination…”

She exhales, something in her shoulders loosening as a small chuckle escapes her lips.

“Feels weird. Being in the same place again.”

“Yeah,” you respond quietly. “Different teams.”

She nods. “Different everything.”

But her hand still tightens slightly at your waist still.

Like it always does.

Like we're still in highschool.

We're not that different.

You never do.

Although its hard Grace would prefer that then loosing the love of her life just because of some distance.

It's only a few years she would tell herself, then they will be in the W.

It will work.

But no matter how much Grace tries to convince herself that you feel the exact same she can't help but let a few worries cross her mind.

What if you don't feel the same?

“Do you want to stop?” she asks quickly, before she can truely think about what shes asking.

The question hangs there.

Serious.

You pull back just enough to look at her.

“No.”

She exhales, relieved.

She never does.

To her, it just feels normal — reaching for you, staying close, following you from room to room like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

You notice, though.

Mostly because you can’t get anything done without her attached to you.

It starts in the kitchen.

You’re trying to make something simple — breakfast, nothing complicated.

Eggs, Bacon and some toast — simple.

Right?

Unfortunately it can never be that simple…

Bella walks in, still half asleep, hoodie sleeves pulled over her hands.

She doesn’t say anything at first.

Just walks straight up behind you.

And leans.

Her forehead presses between your shoulder blades, arms slipping loosely around your waist.

You smile, not even turning around.

“Good morning.”

She hums. Low. Content.

“What are you doing?” she asks, voice muffled against you.

“Trying to cook,” you reply, still focussing on not burning your food.

She tightens her hold slightly. “You can do that later.”

You laugh softly. “I’m hungry, Bells.”

“So am I.”

“Do you want me to make you some then baby?”

Bella only grumbles in response.

“Bells that’s not an answer…”

She leans into you from behind more, nearly her whole-body weight now resting on your back before she mumbles out a response.

“Yes please”

“Ok… can you grab the salt from the pantry please?”

A few moments pass and Bella still hasn’t loosened her grip on your waist, instead letting out a complaint.

“I’m hungry”

You scoff and roll your eyes playfully in response,

“And yet you’re not helping.”

“I am helping,” she mumbles.

You glance down at her arms wrapped around you. “How.”

“Support.”

“Support, huh?”

“Yeah, very important emotional support for my girl.”

You manage to finish cooking — barely — with Bella attached to you the entire time.

When you try to move away?

Plate in hand, you step toward the table.

The second you stand; she grabs your hand.

“To clean up?”

“Because that’s what people do after they cook.”

Bella tugs your hand gently. “Come sit.”

“I’ll sit after.”

“No,” she says, softer now. “Now.”

There’s something about the way she says it — not demanding, just… wanting.

You give in.

Of course you do.

You barely make it to the couch before Bella is curled into you.

Legs tucked under yours. Arm draped across your middle. Head pressed into your chest like she’s claiming the spot.

You run a hand through her hair automatically.

She exhales.

“That’s better.”

You laugh quietly. “You’re so clingy today.”

She tilts her head just enough to look up at you.

“I’m always clingy.”

You let out a small laugh at her response, cause the girls not wrong…

“mhmm, true”

Half an hour later you try and check your phone.

Bella doesn’t like that either.

She nudges it out of your hand with her chin.

“Pay attention to me.”

“I am paying attention to you.”

“Not enough attention.”

You raise an eyebrow. “What does that even mean?”

She shifts, sitting up slightly so she can look at you properly.

“It means,” she says slowly, “I like when you’re focused on me.”

A soft smile slowly spreads across your face. “Yeah?”

She nods. “Yeah.”

You put your phone down instantly at that, pulling Bella into your chest even further and placing a kiss on her forehead.

Later, when you stand up again — this time to grab water — Bella groans.

“Again?”

“It’s been ten minutes.”

“Too long.”

You laugh, walking toward the kitchen.

You make it exactly three steps before you hear her behind you.

Of course.

You don’t even turn around.

“You’re following me.”

“No I’m not.”

You glance back.

She’s right there.

“Bella.”

“What.”

“You’re literally following me.”

She shrugs, completely unbothered. “Coincidence.”

“mmhmm coincidence my ass.”

By the time the afternoon rolls around, you’ve given up on having personal space.

Not that you really mind, you never really do.

Bella is glued to you — whether it’s sitting on your lap while you scroll through something, resting her head on your shoulder, or absentmindedly playing with your fingers like she needs the contact.

At one point, you try to get up again.

She grabs your hoodie.

“Why you keep tryna leave me babyyy?”

You look down at her.

“Cause I still got shit to do Bells”

Rolling her eyes she mutters low “More important then me…”

“Bella…”

“What?” She huffs, leaning back into the couch as she rolls her eyes.

“Bella.”

She still refuses to look at you, finding the ceiling now very interesting.

“Bella look at me.”

She begrudgingly looks over at you, an annoyed expression resting on her face.

“What.”

“I love youuuu” You sing out, leaning down and wrapping your arms around her neck.

“Mhmm, sure you do.” Bella tries to hold an annoyed tone, but the side of her lip quirks up into a small smile at your words.

At the end of the night you are both laid curled into one another under the covers of your bed, a comfortable silence filling the room.

“Why are you so clingy today?” you ask eventually.

Bella shrugs, but this time it’s smaller. Less playful.

“Missed you.”

You blink. “You see me basically every day”

“Yeah,” she says. “But I still missed you.”

That softens you instantly.

You tilt her chin up gently.

“You’re ridiculous.”

She smiles a little. “I know.”

The evening settles in slow.

At some point, Bella ends up half asleep on top of you again — breathing even, completely relaxed.

Your hand rests on her back, thumb tracing lazy patterns.

She shifts slightly, murmuring something you can’t quite hear.

“What?” you whisper.

She hums, eyes still closed.

“Don’t move.”

You smile.

“I won’t.”

A/N: hi.... so ik its been a while.... mb. I have had so so so many SAC's these past 2 weeks its been insane. At the time I'm writing this I js finished my Literature SAC so lets hope I did well... I'm not even kidding Last week I had my 3/4 Bio sac, 1/2 Geography, 1/2 Literature and 1/2 Chemistry in the past 2 weeks as well as mini tasks and presentations. This week i have a Feildwork report and a Maths SAC but after that I'm all done with testing for the term so I will be writing so so much you lot better be ready. Grace isn’t loud about being possessive, its more subtle

She isn’t gonna be all up in someones face (I mean unless its something crazy)

It’s more like her automatically reaching for your hand in public without thinking about it.

If someone is clearly flirting with you, she doesn’t interrupt the conversation… she just walks up and stands closer than usual.

Her arm slides around your waist while she keeps talking like nothing happened.

Speaking of that:

She always has a hand on you somewhere, either holding your hand, arm around your waist or shoulders, hand guiding you somewhere behind your back.

If she’s sitting so are you – Most of the time in her lap, yours thighs thrown over her legs as you sit sideways in her lap, or your back to her chest facing front on in her lap.

If your not in her lap then you are right next to her, your body angled into hers, her arm either around your back as her hand rests on the side of your thigh or her arm thrown over your lap, rubbing small circles into your thigh.

She’s always watching people’s reactions to you more than you realize.

Grace gets slightly quieter when she’s jealous instead of confrontational.

9 times out of 10 she will says shes fine (shes not) and then eventually will give in complaining about someone being to close or something while having the biggest pout

She doesn’t like other people calling you nicknames she uses.

THIS – She loves having little nicknames for you that just she uses but when someone else finds out one of the nicknames she calls you Grace gets all upset and pouty cause its supposed to be “just an us thing”

She pretends not to care when teammates tease her about you — but her ears turn red.

If someone compliments you too enthusiastically, she casually mentions you’re her girlfriend.

Or if she’s in a pissy mood sometimes its not as casual

When you hug other people for a long time she gives you a look.

Grace could literally be across the room from you (very rare) and somehow, she will just know

‘Are you serious’ unimpressed kinda look, and side eyes whoever you were just hugging

Grace lowkey stares when you’re talking to someone she doesn’t know well.

Very weery of people she doesn’t know around you (She don’t playyy)

Always making sure your good, and they aren’t being weird

Hugs… all the time (doesn’t matter where)

When you walk together she keeps a hand on the small of your back.

Shes always gotta have a hand on you somewhere

If someone tries to get your attention when she’s already talking to you, she will literally cut them off

Either physically or verbally – like this girl would either move her body so that she is lowkey blocking the person trying to cut into ur convo or she will js ut them off whatever they were saying and js continue with where ur conversation was at

She gets protective when you’re overwhelmed in busy spaces – THISSS

If you’re dressed up and people keep looking, she keeps you closer to her side.

She is never gonna tell you change, but she will definitely be keeping an eye on everyone around to make sure they r behaving around her girl.

Not because she’s stressed — Azzi rarely is — but because you know her well enough to plan ahead.

Your phone buzzes on the kitchen counter while you’re packing.

Azzi: do i actually need airport clothes or can i just wear a hoodie

You glance at the message and smile.

You call her.

She answers immediately.

“Hi,” she says, already sounding comfortable, like she’s laying on her bed.

“You’re not wearing practice sweats on a plane,” you tell her.

A pause.

“…why not?”

“Because,” you say, calm and patient, “you’re traveling with me.”

She laughs softly. “Oh. So this is a standards thing?”

“Yes.”

“Wow.”

“Get dressed,” you say. “I’m picking you up.”

“Plane essential,” she declares.

Into the basket it goes.

You don’t even argue.

Boarding

When the plane starts boarding, you let the crowd rush first.

Azzi leans against your arm.

“You planned everything,” she says quietly.

“I like making things easy for you.”

She studies your face for a moment.

By the time you sit down beside her, she’s already curled slightly toward you.

You shake your head, amused.

She murmurs, half asleep:

When the plane starts descending, Azzi stretches and yawns.

You look over at the time on the left hand side of your phone, it had only been 2 minutes…

“Love u too” You respond, standing quickly and collecting your stuff for the short walk back to your dorm.

Divine leans over the back of the couch. “Chat behaving?”

“No,” you say.

Z peers at the screen. “Wow,” she says slowly. “They really see it.”

“See what?” you ask.

Z smiles innocently. “Nothing.”

Bella shoots her a look.

Z only grins wider.

Toward the end of the live, Bella shifts again — this time fully turning toward you. Her arm slips behind you, resting along the back of the couch.

It’s casual.

Too casual.

You lean into it without thinking.

Your head tilts slightly toward her shoulder.

The chat loses its mind.

THIS IS NOT FRIENDS THEY ARE TOUCHINGGG BELLA’S ARM???

Bella glances down at you. You glance up at her.

For a split second, neither of you smile.

The air changes.

Something unspoken stretches between you — heavy, electric.

Then Flau’jae claps loudly. “Alright! Wrapping it up!”

The spell breaks.

Bella blinks. Pulls her arm back like she just realized it was there.

“Thanks for hanging out with us!” she says quickly.

You wave. “Bye guys!”

The live ends.

The room erupts.

“Oh my god,” KK says immediately. “You two are idiots.”

Bella groans. “What did we do?”

Flau’jae laughs. “Everything.”

You frown. “What do you mean?”

Z gestures wildly. “Did you SEE yourselves?”

Bella looks at you. You look at her.

“We were normal,” you say.

Bella nods. “Very normal.”

The team stares.

“Okay,” Grace says gently. “So you’re both blind. That tracks.”

Bella crosses her arms. “There is nothing going on.”

KK smirks. “Sure.”

You shake your head. “You’re all dramatic.”

They give up eventually — not because they’re convinced, but because it’s clear you won’t be.

Later that night, it’s just you and Bella walking back to your dorms.

The night is quiet. Cold. Peaceful.

“You good?” she asks, hands tucked into her hoodie sleeves.

“Yeah,” you say. “You?”

She nods. Then hesitates. “Did… the comments bother you?”

She hums. “Yeah.”

A beat.

“You know,” she says softly, “I don’t mind that people think we’re close.”

You smile. “We are close.”

She looks at you then — really looks.

“Yeah,” she says. “We are.”

Your shoulders brush as you walk. Neither of you moves away.

Neither of you names it.

Grace doesn’t mean to get weird about it.

She really doesn’t.

It’s just that she walks into the gym expecting to see you — maybe on your phone, maybe chatting with someone she knows — and instead she sees you laughing, head tipped back, completely relaxed.

With Bella Hines.

Grace slows her steps without realizing it.

Bella’s leaning against the bleachers, arms crossed, saying something animated. You’re close — not too close, but close enough that Grace’s chest tightens anyway. Close enough that Bella nudges your arm when she laughs and you don’t pull away.

Grace tells herself it’s nothing.

Bella’s a friend. You’re allowed to have friends. Grace isn’t the jealous type.

Still, she lingers by the doorway longer than necessary, pretending to retie her shoe while her eyes keep drifting back to the two of you.

You smile at something Bella says — the real one. The soft one. The one Grace usually gets when it’s late and you’re curled up together and the world feels small.

Grace swallows.

By the time you notice her, it’s already too late.

“Hey!” you call, waving. “We were just—”

Grace nods, forcing a smile that doesn’t quite reach her eyes. “I can see.”

Bella glances between the two of you, immediately clocking the shift. She straightens. “I should probably get going anyway.”

“Already?” you ask.

Grace raises an eyebrow before she can stop herself.

Bella chuckles awkwardly. “Yeah. I’ll text you later, okay?”

You nod, completely oblivious, and give Bella a quick hug before she leaves.

Grace watches the entire thing.

In silence.

It isn’t until you’re walking back to the car together that you feel it — the way Grace’s hand slips into yours slower than usual, grip a little tighter.

“You okay?” you ask.

She hums. Noncommittal.

“Grace.”

She exhales through her nose. “You seemed… comfortable.”

You frown. “With Bella?”

“Yeah,” she says, too quickly. “Very.”

Something clicks.

You stop walking. “Wait. Are you jealous?”

Grace turns to you, jaw tight. “No.”

You tilt your head. “That was the fastest ‘no’ I’ve ever heard.”

She sighs, shoulders dropping a fraction. “I just— I don’t love the way she looks at you.”

You blink. “How does she look at me?”

“Like she’s impressed,” Grace mutters. “Like she wants your attention.”

You soften immediately.

“Grace,” you say gently. “Bella knows we’re together.”

“I know,” she says. “That doesn’t stop people.”

You step closer, hands settling at her waist. “Is that what this is really about?”

She doesn’t answer right away.

Then, quietly: “I don’t like sharing you.”

Your heart twists — not because it’s possessive, but because it’s honest.

“You’re not sharing me,” you say softly. “I chose you.”

Grace looks down at you then, eyes searching. “Yeah?”

“Yeah,” you say without hesitation. “Every time.”

She exhales, tension easing out of her shoulders. Her hand slides to the small of your back, pulling you in just enough to remind herself you’re real.

“I’m sorry,” she murmurs. “I didn’t mean to make it weird.”

You smile, pressing a quick kiss to her jaw. “You’re allowed to feel things.”

She hums. “Still don’t like her.”

You laugh. “I figured.”

Grace finally smiles — small, genuine — and squeezes you a little closer as you start walking again.

Jealousy fades.

But the way she keeps her arm around you the rest of the night?

That stays.

“I don’t think I can make it back to Storrs for a while,” Paige says over FaceTime, Dallas skyline glowing faintly behind her. “Schedule’s packed. Flights are insane.”

You nod, trying not to let your disappointment show. “That’s okay,” you say, soft but understanding. “I know you’re busy.”

Paige watches you closely — too closely — like she’s memorizing the way you accept it without complaint. “I’ll make it up to you,” she promises.

You smile. “You always do.”

What you don’t see is the way she grins the second the call ends.

The UConn locker room is suspiciously weird all week.

KK keeps smirking at you. Azzi refuses to meet your eyes. Sarah asks, very casually, how Paige was going – apparently, she wasn’t responding to her texts...

Eventually you had had enough of being left in the dark.

“You guys are acting strange,” you say, narrowing your eyes.

Your eyes scan the room, for some kind of slip up…

Instead the entire room goes silent for a few moments before KK perks up.

“Nah,” KK replies quickly. “You’re imagining things.”

You don’t buy it. But you let it go.

Game day arrives cold and bright, the kind of Connecticut winter afternoon that makes your bones ache. You’re focused — locked in — but there’s a quiet ache sitting in your chest anyway.

You wish Paige were here.

She’s been good about texting — sending encouragement, reminding you to eat, telling you she’s proud — but it’s not the same as seeing her in the stands, hoodie pulled over her head, eyes locked on you like you’re the only thing in the gym.

You lace your shoes tighter than usual.

“Someone’s tense,” Azzi says lightly, bumping your shoulder.

“Big game,” you reply.

She hums. “Yeah. Big.”

You don’t notice the way she smiles.

Warmups start. The arena fills. Noise swells.

You run through drills, breathing steady, muscle memory taking over.

Every now and then, your eyes flick instinctively toward the stands.

She’s not there.

Of course she’s not.

You tell yourself to stop looking.

Halftime approaches.

You’re on the bench, towel around your shoulders, listening to Geno talk adjustments. Sweat drips down your spine. Your chest rises and falls with controlled breaths.

Then KK nudges you.

“Hey,” she whispers. “When we go back out… look back at the bench. Don’t ask.”

You frown. “What?”

She just grins. “Trust me.”

Your heart skips — confused, wary, curious.

The horn sounds. The team stands.

You jog back onto the court, clapping once, eyes lifting automatically before turning back slightly to glance at the bench.

Instead your eyes move past the bench and into the row of seats behind.

That’s when your entire body forgets how to move.

There she is.

Paige Bueckers, Dallas hoodie pulled over her head, standing right behind the UConn bench like she’s always belonged there.

Same soft smile.

Same familiar eyes already locked onto yours.

Your brain short-circuits.

She raises her hands slightly, like she’s bracing for impact.

You stop dead.

“Are you serious?” you mouth.

Paige laughs silently, nodding. Surprise.

Your teammates lose it.

Azzi smiles sweetly. KK starts clapping like this was the plan all along. Jana throws her arms around your shoulders from behind, laughing into your ear.

“You’re welcome,” she says.

You don’t hear anything else.

All you can see is Paige — eyes bright, smile so wide it hurts.

She flew across the country for this.

For you.

The ref blows the whistle, snapping you back to reality. You shake your head once, trying to reset, heart hammering so hard you swear the whole arena can hear it.

Paige taps her chest twice and points at you.

You nod.

I got you.

You play like someone lit a fire under you.

Every shot feels cleaner. Every cut sharper. You feed off the energy buzzing in your veins, off the way Paige stands every time you touch the ball, off the way she bites her lip when you drive.

When you hit a three, you glance over.

She’s already clapping — proud, unfiltered, unapologetic.

Your chest aches in the best way.

Postgame is chaos.

The locker room is loud — music blaring, laughter echoing — and you’re barely through peeling off your jersey when Paige appears in the doorway.

The room erupts.

“ABOUT TIME,” KK yells. “Took you long enough,” Azzi adds. “Okay okay reunion moment,” Ice laughs, pushing you gently toward her.

You don’t hesitate.

You cross the room in three strides and crash into Paige, arms wrapping around her neck as she lifts you clean off the floor.

“You’re evil,” you laugh into her shoulder. “You lied to me.”

She squeezes you tighter. “I know.”

“You said you couldn’t make it.”

“I know.”

You pull back just enough to look at her. “You flew all this way.”

She nods. “Wouldn’t miss watching you play.”

Your throat tightens.

“Team knew,” she adds softly, glancing around.

You look back at your teammates — all grinning, all very pleased with themselves.

“You’re all terrible,” you say, laughing.

“But you’re smiling,” KK points out.

Paige presses her forehead to yours. “You okay?”

You nod. “I’m more than okay.”

She kisses you — quick but full — and the locker room explodes again.

Later, when things quiet down, you sit side by side on the bench outside the locker room, legs brushing, hands tangled together like distance never existed.

“You surprised me,” you admit.

Paige shrugs. “You deserve surprises.”

You look at her — really look at her — and realize something settles in your chest.

Distance didn’t break you. It just made moments like this hit harder.

“Stay a few days?” you ask softly.

She smiles. “Already planned on it.”

You laugh, leaning into her shoulder, the noise of the arena fading into something warm and distant.
