Sonic then tries to teach Shadow to be his own person, which of course comes with a whole host of difficulties. Thankfully Sonic has no intentions of giving up.
Meanwhile Mephiles is thrown into this timeline's future where he encounter's this world's Silver. The two eventually end up teaming up to come back to the past not only to research it, but to potentially figure out what disaster befell Silver's current time. All while avoiding the past versions of people they know in the future.

In other news I updated two of my fics (Heart of a Hero and Bound by Fate) during my unintentional hiatus. Enjoy those!
Been working on chapter 16 of Heart of a Hero now that fictober is over... It's about 3/4 of the way written at the moment (not including editing/proofreading). Hoping I'll have it ready to post by the weekend! Enjoy this sneak peek in the meantime.
Happy Halloween everyone! Take some Bound by Fate art is celebration of the spooky day.
I hope all of you that are trick or treating get plenty of candy. I also hop that those of you that aren't have fun handing out candy, going to parties, or doing whatever else you might have planned for the night!
"Thought I might find you here." Sonic's voice started Shadow for a moment. "Nice view and all." Sonic sat down next to him on the roof. "Couldn't sleep?"
"No." Shadow admitted softly. Ever since unlocking what had been dubbed his "Doom Powers" he’d been feeling uneasy. It didn't help that he'd started having odd dreams recently. Ones involving Black Doom. As much as sleep was nice he was grateful he didn't seem to need as much as the average person. Theoretically he could go for days without sleep, but those around him wouldn't be very happy if he did that.
Sonic gently put an arm around Shadow and pulled him close. "The dreams again?" Shadow simply nodded. This had not been something he'd been able to keep from Sonic. In fact they were the entire reason they were back at home at the moment rather than on the comet. "Wanna talk about them again?"
"There's nothing new to say." Shadow sighed. "I just wish they would stop because the more I have them the more I feel as if somehow he's still out there."
"You took him out yourself." Sonic stated calmly. "Plus Eclipse or some of the other Black Arms would know if he's still alive right?"
"In theory..." Shadow held out his hand and looked down at it. Dark energy crawled along it as he thought about his Doom Powers. The energy vanished as he closed his hand into a fist. "But these powers... why now? Why not when I first defeated him?" He squeezed his eyes shut.
"I don't have all the answers for you Shads." Sonic started to gently run a hand through Shadow's quills. "But if he was still around we'd know. And even if he somehow managed to slip through the cracks and is out there somewhere... Well we can take care of him. If he is still around it would be a massive mistake to show his face again. I didn't get my own go at him before."
Despite himself Shadow couldn't stop an amused snort at that. "How kind of you to offer to beat up my...father should he still be alive."
"What are boyfriends for huh?" Sonic sounded amused. "If they won't beat up your deadbeat dad for you, what good are they?"
"Do you have any deadbeat dad I should be worried about?" Shadow felt a small smile twitch onto his face.
"Not that I know of." Sonic snorted. "If you can find him though well... eh probably leave the guy alone. I've got no beef with whoever he is."
"Noted." Shadow sighed. Silence stretched between them for a few moments. "You're... ok with all this?"
"Shadow it doesn't matter what you look like, or what powers you have. I still love you. If I'd had a problem with the whole part alien thing we wouldn't even be having this conversation right now." Sonic chuckled. "No matter how many times you ask you'll always get the same answer from me. I love you, and nothing about you will change that."
"I know." Shadow sighed. "At least part of me does."
"But it helps for you to keep hearing it?" Sonic asked. Shadow simply nodded. "Well know this Shadow the hedgehog." Shadow looked over at Sonic. "Nothing you do or are is gonna get rid of me. You're stuck with me now."
Summary: Sonic and Knuckles get surrounded by Dark Gaia creatures.
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~650 words
You can check it out on ao3 here if you prefer.
"So we're surrounded." Knuckles huffed. All around them were Dark Gaia creatures.
"Yep." Sonic flexed his claws. Honestly he wasn't even sure how they'd all managed to surround them like this. Sonic narrowed his eyes. Had they been getting more organized? That probably was a bad sign.
"Any bright ideas or are we winging it?" Knuckles rolled his shoulders back before raising his arms, ready to punch.
Sonic thought for a moment. "Maybe..." He eyed the slowly advancing crowd, trying to judge how thick of a wall they formed. "Do you trust me?"
"Only because I have to." Knuckles glanced at him wearily. "Why?"
"Just... get ready to land on your feet." Without further warning Sonic picked up Knuckles and tossed him over the crowd of Dark Gaia creatures. Some of them actually stopped to watch the echidna fly over them, several making noises of confusion. Based on the lack of any crash noises he hoped that Knuckles had actually landed well.
With the creatures distracted he took to the offence. Before they registered what was happening he managed to carve his way through part of the wall they'd formed around him and Knuckles. Just as he'd hoped Knuckles was doing the same from the outside. "You could have warned me about what you were going to do!" Knuckles growled as he punched another of the creatures, causing it to vanish.
"Where's the fun in that?" Sonic chuckled as he slashed at a couple creatures that charged them. By now they'd all recovered from the momentary distraction and were back on the duo full force. "Besides it worked didn't it?"
"Barely!" Knuckles ducked under the swing of a larger Dark Gaia creature before countering with a punch of his own. "And in case you hadn't noticed we're being surrounded again!"
"Yeah I did notice that..." Sonic grumbled. "It's better than it was though. We can handle this." At least Sonic hoped they could. The creatures seemed way more organized tonight and it certainly felt like there were way more of them than usual. Sonic had gotten good at fighting these things, he liked to think he knew when something was off. Of course right now wasn't the time to discuss his suspicions with Knuckles. Both were a little busy fighting for their lives.
Exhaustion started to tug at Sonic while the two of them were still swarmed. Of course they'd managed to thin the numbers considerably but they still had their work cut out for them. An odd plan formed in his tired mind. Well at this point it was worth a try. He focused on the Dark Gaia creatures' various noises. Before he'd sworn he could almost hear words in their seemingly random cries. Maybe... maybe he wasn't just imagining that.
"Back off." Sonic replicated some of the noises he heard into what he thought was the command he wanted to convey. Knuckles glanced over at him oddly, clearly not expecting him to replicate their noises.
To his surprise though, the creatures backed off. Several glanced at each other confused. "What did you just do?" Knuckles sound bewildered.
"I have no idea." Sonic spoke normally. "I'll take it though." He cleared his throat. "Leave and disperse." Sonic told the Dark Gaia creatures forcefully in their own language. The fact they had a language at all and he could speak it still had him reeling, but he could freak out properly later.
They actually listened, though reluctantly. Some eyed him like they wanted to challenge his order but he silently barred his teeth at those and they left just like the others. Once they were all out of sight and no longer threatening anyone Sonic had time to properly mentally freak out. Before his mind could properly spin up into panic mode though he felt a much more pressing concern, the need for sleep. Rather inelegantly he collapsed then and there and passed out.
Summary: Shadow and the others are ambushed by the Metallix.
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~950 words
You can check it out on ao3 here if you prefer.
Shadow dove out of the way of the swipe of one of the Metallix. This had unfortunately been a trap and he, Super, and Rouge were paying for not being more careful now. The hangar bay of some sort was a chaotic mess as the Metallix units flew around, taking swipes at the trio whenever they felt they had an opening. "I still don't understand where they came from." Super spin attacked one of the charging Metallix. "They'd all been destroyed. Plus all the models based on Sonic were gone way before all of them were gone for good."
"Evidently they weren't all destroyed!" Rouge kicked one of the charging metal copies away.
"We were reborn." One of the Metallix spoke. Suddenly the flurry of battle around them ceased as the Metallix stopped their attack.
"What, did Robotnik decide it was a good idea to bring you all back? From what I've heard that didn't work out well for him last time." Rouge eyed the robots surrounding them wearily.
"Hardly." Another Metallix spoke. "The doctor and his assistant have nothing to do with the return of the brotherhood."
"If it wasn't the doctor then... who?" Super's eyes darted around like he was looking for an escape route. Shadow mentally commended that but sadly the three of them were thoroughly surrounded.
"The greatest Metallix to ever be created and our new leader." Yet another Metallix spoke up. "One who has bested the hedgehog before." The Metallix flexed its claws. "You may refer to him as Neo."
"Neo?" Shadow glanced over at Super. If any of the three of them would know who that was it would be Super.
"No idea..." Super's face scrunched up in confusion. "I can't remember a time Sonic was ever truly beaten by a Metallix either. Maybe the first one... but he won in the end. The one on the Floating Island I ended up taking care of..." He shook his head. "Even the ones based on Knuckles that were tougher never beat him I don't think..."
"The time for speaking is over." A Metallix spoke. "We have gotten what we came here for, your usefulness has been outlived."
Shadow braced for an attack that never came. Instead the spinning up of some sort of weapons and the following shooting of said weapons filled the room. The Metallix scattered, clearly also not expecting the sudden shower of bullets. Shadow glanced over to where he thought the attack was coming from to see a large red and black robot. Its gaze was focused on the various Metallix units in the hangar as it attempted to gun them down. "What..?" Rouge's voice was quiet. "Who called in the cavalry?"
"It looks like something Robotnik would build." Super eyed the new combatant wearily.
"For now all I care about is it's not pointing those guns at us." Shadow shook his head as several of the Metallix that were charging the robot were hit and faltered. It wasn't enough to take them down of course but it kept their attention and was damaging their plating.
"Then we should use this oh so convenient distraction to make a tactical retreat. C'mon boys, let's hustle." Rouge gestured for the two of them to follow and both did with little hesitation.
A few of the other Metallix chased after them, but with reduced numbers it became easier to fend them off. "Retreat brothers!" One of the Metallix, one which was staying out of the fight it seemed, called out. "We have accomplished our mission." The Metallix did seem reluctant to leave but eventually they all filtered out.
The robot shot at them until all of them were out of sight. "INFERIOR MODELS." The robot's voice held what almost sounded like disdain despite the monotone quality of it.
"Where did they go?" Super looked around.
"THEY HAVE RUN LIKE COWARDS BECAUSE THEY KNEW I WOULD DESTROY THEM." The robot looked over at their group and Super flinched.
Rouge, apparently not wanting to listen to her own survival instincts today, strolled up to the robot. It simply looked down at her. "So what are you doing here? Not after us I hope."
"NEGATIVE. MY MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO DESTROY THE METALLIX. SECONDARY OBJECTIVE DESTROY ROBOTNIK FOR LOCKING ME AWAY." The robot shifted. "UNLESS YOU ARE ALLIES OF THE METALLIX OR THE DOCTOR I HAVE NO QUARREL WITH YOU."
"We have no loyalty to either." Shadow crossed his arms. "Robotnik locked you away?"
"AFFIRMATIVE." The robot sounded upset. "I WAS CREATED AS AN EXTRA FAILSAFE SHOULD THE METALLIX DISOBEY ROBOTNIK AGAIN. A METALLIX HUNTER IS WHAT I WAS REFERRED TO AS. I WAS NEVER DEPLOYED DESPITE SUCCESSFUL TESTS."
"As far as I know after the last brotherhood incident the Metallix never disobeyed Robotnik again. The one based on Knuckles was loyal." Super rubbed the back of his head.
"HOW UNFORTUNATE." The robot said flatly.
"Say big guy you might just be in luck." Rouge pat the robot on the arm. "We're working to take out the Metallix right now. Since we all want the same thing what do you say to a little team up hm?"
The robot seemed to consider this for a moment. "I WILL BE GIVEN AMPLE OPPORTUNITY TO DESTROY THE INFERIOR MODELS?"
"Of course." Rouge nodded.
"I FIND THIS TEAM UP ACCEPTABLE THEN. JUST DO NOT GET IN MY WAY." The robot sounded satisfied.
"So if we're going to be working together... what should we call you?" Super tilted his head. He still looked mildly uncomfortable but Shadow wasn't sure if it was because of the robot or lingering nerves from the ambush.
"I AM E-123 OMEGA." Omega stated proudly.
"Well then Omega, welcome to the team." Rouge grinned. Shadow and Super shared a look. Just how did she keep doing that?
"We're not lost." Sonic frowned as he looked around at the totally not at all unfamiliar landscape around them.
"We are." Knuckles huffed. "You've been standing there like an idiot for nearly ten minutes."
Sonic's ear twitched. "Well maybe I just like the scenery."
"Yeah sure mutt." Knuckles rolled his eyes. "While you 'admire the scenery' I'm going to figure out the way to the closest town."
"I'm not lost!" Sonic threw his hands in the air as Knuckles walked off. Ok maybe he was lost but it hurt his pride to admit it. Usually he was always on top of navigation, one of his many skills, but today he was just... off. He'd never been here before sure but that had never stopped him before. Usually he had a good enough natural sense of direction that unfamiliar landscapes proved no difficulty to him.
Was there something else going on maybe? Or was he really just losing his touch? No. There had to be something else going on. Even in brief moments before when he'd not been sure where to go he'd never just stood around and debated what to do that long. Suddenly he felt very aware of the distance between himself and Knuckles, even if it wasn't that much. It was almost like acknowledging that something was wrong flipped a switch.
The air felt almost suffocating. Something about this place both never wanted him to leave and to get out as soon as possible. His mind started to feel cloudy, but he knew he needed to get to Knuckles. Now. He sped off in the direction the echidna had gone and caught up in a couple seconds. Knuckles looked upset by the sudden intrusion before he seemed to register the look on Sonic's face. Not that Sonic even knew what sort of look he was making. Panic maybe?
"What's wrong?" Knuckles was all business, looking around at the surrounding landscape like something might jump out at them. For all Sonic knew that was a distinct possibility.
"Don't know." Sonic's eyes darted around. Why did he feel like he was being watched? He couldn't hear anything besides Knuckles and his own increasing heartbeat. Yet something almost seemed to be… probing at his mind and he was painfully aware of its existence now. Though he wasn’t 100% sure if that odd feeling was just created by his sudden onset of nerves or not. "Feels like something is watching us. I don't think we should be here."
"Alright." Surprisingly Knuckles didn't put up any sort of fight. "Just pick a direction, we'll get our bearings once we're away from whatever this is."
Sonic nodded, eyes still trying to locate the invisible threat. He could feel his quills start to raise and his fur stand on end. It was infuriating to not even know what was causing it. Whether there really was something out there or if his instincts were just going haywire for no reason. Without another word Sonic picked up Knuckles and adjusted his grip until he was sure he wouldn't drop him. Last thing he needed was for the echidna to complain about Sonic dropping him again.
As he got ready to run he did one last scan of the area. Right before he took off running he swore he saw the silhouette of someone with piercing red eyes watching him speed off. Somehow even from that fleeting glance he knew that was what had been watching them. That just left him with so many more questions though. Most pressingly: just who was that?
Summary: Maria visits Shadow after a particularly rough day for him.
Warnings: Very vague references to experimentation
Word Count: ~650 words

Maria waited for the sound of footsteps to fade before she silently walked through the restricted halls of the Ark. At this point she was an expert at navigating them, but it never hurt to be careful. Helped her avoid any conversations she didn't want to have with her grandfather. Today it had been especially hard to even sneak into this section of the Ark in the first place. The scientists had done some big experiment with Shadow today and were apparently on edge due to whatever the results were. Maria really didn't care about them though, she knew that on a day like this Shadow would be needing support more than usual.
What they'd done today.... Why would they do this? How could they not see that Shadow was a thinking, feeling being? Maybe none of them wanted to see it... and that really saddened her. Well at the very least she could treat Shadow how he deserved to be treated. It was just a little bonus that she always seemed to feel a little better after a visit with him.
With a last look around she put in the code to Shadow's room and slipped inside. She didn't even hear him stir as she walked in. She frowned as she saw him curled into a loose ball on the floor. Even in the dim light of the room his fur looked paler than usual. "Shadow?" Maria quietly called out, not wanting to startle him. Sluggishly he turned so he could see her. Even his eyes which were usually so vibrant seemed like they'd nearly lost all their color. "Oh Shadow..." She walked over and gently dropped down to his side.
Normally he might pull himself closer to her but he just didn't seem to have the energy to do it, so Maria did her best to pull him close. He sighed in contentment. The two of them likely wouldn't be having a proper conversation today if Shadow couldn't move. "This bad huh? I thought it was bad based on what I heard grandfather and the other scientists saying... Seeing it is a whole other thing though." She gently stroked his quills. "I have no idea what they actually hope to accomplish, nearly draining you of chaos energy like that." Shadow simply hummed, though she'd be willing to bet he had no idea either.
"I just can't believe them. No matter what I do they won't even listen to me." Maria sighed in frustration. "We'll just have to go down to earth together and then they won't be able to do anything to you anymore." She nodded with resolve. "I know there's my illness to worry about but.... I always feel better when I'm with you Shadow. Maybe I'll even be able to introduce you to my family. I'm sure they'd love you. Well besides grandfather of course..."
Shadow's ear twitched, an indication to her that he was listening to her. "It's decided then. Once I can get you out of here we'll go down to earth and we'll both be free of this. I'll be able to teach you so many things." She looked down at Shadow and could tell he was half asleep in her lap. "Just sleep for now though ok? You need it. I'll worry about the scheming to get us out of here." Finally his eyes slipped shut and his breathing evened out.
Maria let out a sigh of relief. While she knew that they'd never leave Shadow in a condition that was life threatening she would always worry. Ultimate Lifeform or not he still needed to be cared for. He was just a little kid after all. A little kid who'd never asked for any of this but endured it anyway. Honestly she had no idea how he did it, but she'd offer him whatever help she could. Even if it was just keeping the hope of a better future alive most days.
Summary: Shadow has a dream where he can talk to Maria.

AN: Posting on mobile today. Plus this little fic was written all on mobile so if anything is funky know that's why lol.
Shadow still felt heavy with sleep as he blinked his eyes open. Wait. He opened his eyes fully and pushed himself to his feet, his tail swaying slowly behind him. Somehow he could tell he was not truly awake. The landscape around him was blurry, like his mind couldn't really make it out. "Shadow?" A painfully familiar voice rang out. Maria seemed to materialize out of nowhere. A product of the dream no doubt.
Shadow didn't really care if she was real or not, he ran to her and threw his arms around her. "It's been a while, hasn't it?" Shadow spoke softly.
Maria began to pet his head. "It has." She pulled back and put her hands on either side of his face. "You look so happy."
Shadow put a hand on one of Maria's hands. "I am. I really am." Shadow hummed, a smile on his face. He sat down and Maria followed. "I've met so many wonderful people who see me for me. I have family and friends now. People who I love so dearly."
"I'm so glad." Maria smiled as tears gathered in her eyes. "I knew you would find people."
"I wish you could have met them." Shadow looked down.
Maria gently pushed his head back up. "It's alright. I just know they're wonderful if you care so much about them."
Shadow hummed. "I also have... well I suppose a boyfriend would be the most appropriate term."
"Really!?" Maria gasped in joy. "Tell me a about him. I need to know about the boy that captured my little Shadow's heart."
"His name is Sonic, a hedgehog like me." Shadow chuckled. "Fast as well. Most importantly though he's the most patient and kind person I've ever met. I truly love him, even if I don't know why he even fell for me in the first place."
"He sounds wonderful." Maria stroked Shadow's quills. "What about your friends?"
"They're interesting." Shadow snorted. "But all have my back and even if I don't show it often I appreciate them so much." Shadow sighed. "The Black Arms returned as well."
"You seem to have mixed feelings about that." Maria scratched behind his ear. She'd always been good at reading him.
"Black Doom was not the man I thought he was but... he's gone now. I have a brother too. Eclipse. I'm leading the Black Arms alongside him now. He still has much to learn about working with others but the fact he's willing to try is enough for now." He shook his head. "So much has happened..."
"Don't worry about telling me about everything Shadow. The main thing I care about is you being happy." Maria pulled her hands back and put them in her lap. "I'm just so glad you're not on the Ark anymore and that you've found people who care."
"I am." Shadow reassured. "I am more happy than I ever thought possible even if some days are harder than others. It was hard to work to undo all the harm that was done to me, and I know it still lingers but... I don't mind trying with those I've found by my side."
"Then never give up Shadow. Live for me ok?" Maria took his hands. "Just live your life. You deserve it."
Shadow could feel the pull of consciousness as he pulled Maria into a last hug. "I will."
Sonic didn't think he'd ever felt tired when in his super form before, but here he was panting as he stared down Super. Well more accurately, The End using Super's body. The two had been fighting to a standstill not a moment before but now he was oddly still and Sonic had no idea what to do. Red and black still crawled over Super's body so he knew The End was still piloting his body but maybe... this stillness was a good thing. Maybe it meant Super was fighting back.
"Why are you hesitating?" Sage suddenly appeared beside him.
"Something's happening." Sonic took a deep breath. He was not going to admit he was also catching his breath.
"You've been given an opportunity to strike down your opponent and end this." Sage looked between him and Super. "Why not take it?"
"Would you if it was Eggman in Super's place and you in mine?" Sonic asked quietly.
Sage's form flickered to blue and white for a moment before she looked down. "I'm... unsure."
"Then you can get why I'm hesitating then." Sonic clenched and unclenched his hands a few times. "Besides... I know he's still in there. I can feel it."
"Data says your bond was severed. You should not be able to 'feel' anything from him at this point." Sage calmly pointed out.
That statement cut deep. The aching sense of loss in his chest grew more pronounced. "Doesn't matter. I just know." Sonic said calmly, his eyes snapping to the twitching of Super's fingers. "Now get clear, I think he's about to move again." Sage said nothing, simply vanishing and presumably reappearing with the others.
Slowly Super's hand rose and grabbed at the fur on his chest. It was quiet for a moment before Super's eyes snapped open and he yelled. Red and black seemed to dissolve off him as chaos energy sparked around him wildly. The red and black, which Sonic assumed was The End, fled towards the downed form of Supreme. Sonic wanted to say something, anything, but Super just held out a hand, beckoning Sonic to take it. He did so without hesitation.
The emptiness was instantly filled with Super's familiar presence. Super's visible form faded away and Sonic could feel the two meshing together. "Come on." Super seemed to whisper. "We've done this before." Black and blue overcame their fur as both their chaos and cyber energy meshed together. As Supreme rose they looked down at the possessed titan in disdain. It looked up at them and bellowed out some sort of challenge.
This was it. Chaos and cyber energy crawled over their body. A combination which shouldn't be held for long. Warnings rang out in their head that part of them wasn't sure the origins of. The other part reassuring that the warnings were genuine, but they would be ok. They pointed at The End. "This is over." They said, narrowing their eyes.
"Your bond was severed." The End hissed. Their Titan vessel shifted with their words.
"Did you really think a little thing like that would stop us?" They tilted their head. "As if." They grinned. "Now then, let's get down to the real fight shall we?"

"There's not enough time." Rouge's voice was tight as her hands flew over the Ark's controls. Nearby Shadow watched in tense silence. "I won't be able to get this thing back under control until it's too late."
Shadow glanced over at the six emeralds which were nestled in the center pillar. "If we removed the power source?"
"Wouldn't help. This place would have more than enough auxiliary power built up to keep it going until impact." Rouge's eyes remained focused on her work.
"The others?" Shadow looked down, pinning his ear to his head.
"Still being kept occupied by those robots as far as I can tell." Rouge's ear twitched before she looked over at the entrance to the room. "Or well, maybe not all of them."
Shadow followed her gaze. "Super." He internally sighed in relief. "And... Sonic."
"Save it faker." Sonic sighed. "We've got a planet to save don't we? That comes first."
Super pulled the seventh emerald from his quills and gestured to the other six. "If we can't stop it from in here..."
"Perhaps we can stop it from outside." Shadow nodded. It was a risk. None of them really knew how using all the emeralds would affect them but it wasn't as if they had much of a choice. Either they tried or the planet would be destroyed. "Rouge?"
"I'll keep doing what I can from in here." Without looking up, Rouge tossed Shadow three small objects. "Put those in your ears so we can keep in contact during this operation. Wordlessly Shadow passed them out. Finally Rouge looked at the three of them. "Good luck boys."
The three of them worked to remove the other six emeralds as quickly as they could. It wasn't long before all of them were laid out in front of the trio. "Ready?" Super glanced between Sonic and Shadow.
"Whatever. Let's just get this over with." Sonic seemed like he was trying to sound unbothered, but he couldn't quite hide his nerves. Shadow decided not to comment on that and just nodded.
Super nodded back and the emeralds began to circle around them lazily. The air was practically electric from how much chaos energy was building. Shadow watched as gold began to overtake his black fur, a noticeably lighter shade than Super's usual fur color. The surge of energy was intoxicating. It wanted him to give into the tide, allow it to run free. He didn't allow it to overtake him though. Instead he guided the torrent, coaxed it into doing as he wanted. It seemed to accept his will for the time being but he had no idea how long it would last.
Finally he glanced over at the other two to see how they were faring. Super's fur, unsurprisingly, hadn't changed in color. Though occasionally sparks of chaos came off his body. His spiral eyes were a bit more wild than usual but his body language seemed fairly calm. Sonic looked remarkably similar to Super now, minus the eyes though they had taken on the same red that Super's eyes normally were. "Is it supposed to feel like everything is on fire?" Sonic grit out.
"Only if you're fighting it." Shadow looked at Sonic carefully. Super even looked concerned. "If you don't direct it meaningfully or allow it to escape in some way then the chaos will turn on you. Don't let it."
"Easy for you to say." Sonic hissed.
"You're still scared." Shadow moved towards him and Super moved away to give him space. "Your relationship with chaos energy has been nothing but negative in the past. You can't allow the fear you feel to consume you. As, for lack of a better term, chaotic as it is chaos energy is a tool. Wield it."
Sonic clenched his fists and took a deep breath. "Alright. Let's do this."
Shadow turned to Super and dropped his voice low. "Keep a close eye on him." Super nodded, keeping his worried gaze on Sonic. "Let's get this done shall we?" Shadow said much louder. "No more time to waste."
Silver blinked as Mephiles placed some piece of paper on the table in front of him. The duo were currently in the past. In the wake of finding out that Eclipse was on their side Silver had wanted to get back to their self appointed job as soon as possible. "What's this?"
"A potential lead." Mephiles sounded pleased. "I cannot speak on its validity yet but... well it's not as if we've had any real leads prior to this one."
"Wait really!?" Silver perked up. "How?"
"Your... uncle had some rather interesting insight." Mephiles hummed.
Silver flipped over the piece of paper. It was some sort of picture. Sadly it was pretty blurry but he could make out what looked like two figures in the distance. Around them seemed to be the scene of some sort of battle. Whatever the area had been before it was unrecognizable now. Most notably though there were large... gashes in the air and ground. The two figures seemed to be doing... something to the gashes in the air but Silver had no idea what. "What is this..?" Silver frowned, trying in vain to pick out more details of the poor quality photo.
"Something your uncle gave me before we came back to this time." Mephiles crossed his arms. "He claims it's a picture from the same day he felt a loss of a lot of Black Arms’ lives. I suspect that whatever we have here is related. It's certainly not natural whatever it is."
"No..." Silver put the picture down. "How did he even get this though?"
"I'm unsure, but based on his willingness to help us I suspect he's been looking into the cause of your time himself for some time now. Without a way to travel to before whatever occurred though..." Mephiles trailed off.
"He had no way to fix it even if he did find out what happened." Silver finished for him.
"Precisely." Mephiles nodded.
"Do we have any idea who those two are?" Silver squinted at the figures in the photo.
"I have...suspicions." Mephiles sighed. "Though I imagine you might not like them."
Silver puzzled over that for a moment before realization hit him. "You think it's my parents?"
"We both know they're hiding information from us." Mephiles ran a hand through his quills. "There is a reason we don't admit to them the full truth of what we're doing. We also know they are around in this time and therefore would have also been around whenever this happened." He tapped his finger on the photo. "One other thing. Eclipse said he did not recall why he was off planet at the time correct?" Mephiles tilted his head and Silver nodded. "I spoke with your uncle and he shared a fair bit of information with me. Most importantly for this point Shadow's status as co leader of the Black Arms. This position gives him... certain authorities over others of his race."
Silver wrung his hands. "What are you implying?"
"I believe that Shadow sent Eclipse away while he and Sonic attempted to deal with... well whatever this is." Mephiles gestured to the photo. "He made sure to wipe Eclipse's memory of why in the first place. Why he'd wish to do that I'm uncertain. Much like I am uncertain why if the two tried to stop whatever this disaster was they would hinder us in trying to fix it. Frankly it doesn't all add up. Evidently we are missing something.... but this is a start."
Slowly Silver nodded. The points Mephiles brought up made sense, but they didn't have all the information. "Right." He sighed before putting a smile on his face. "I believe in us. We'll figure this out. This is more than we had before after all."
"And you're... alright with this?" Mephiles looked oddly... concerned? It was sort of an odd look for him.
"I love my parents." Silver took a deep breath. "But people deserve the chance to have a future. Like I said before, it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. If they're involved with whatever happened... well that won't change my resolve."
Slowly Mephiles nodded. "Then we'll begin our new search in earnest. Ready?"

"Here." Amy handed Super a hot mug of something. Based on the smell he was pretty sure it was hot chocolate. Word had apparently spread quickly of the aftermath of Super's little... experiment with the Master Emerald. It had been several days since then and he'd only really come back to awareness now. It was... concerning it took that long but Sonic was happy to let him have control for a while if it would help calm his nerves. As soon as word spread that Super was back in action Amy had all but broke down their door wanting to check on him. It was... nice he supposed. Even if she was a little too attentive in some ways.
"Thanks." Super hummed before taking a sip. It was hot chocolate.
"Well if I didn't know you were out of it before..." Amy chuckled as she joined him on the couch he was sitting on.
Super just hummed as he pulled the blanket that had been draped around his shoulders at some point closer. He wondered if this is what Sonic had felt like while he'd been recovering over the past few days. Cause if it was he did feel at least a little bad for putting the other hedgehog through this. At least he wasn't in pain like the aftermath of his first chaos blast. He just felt... drained. "If I ever see the Master Emerald again it'll be too soon." Super mumbled before taking another sip of his drink.
"Wasn't it your idea though?" Amy rose a brow. Super didn't give her a response beyond taking another long sip of his drink. "And how did that work out?"
"Awful." Super groaned. "Real zero out of ten experience."
Amy giggled. "Sonic really is rubbing off on you huh?" Super just mumbled something unintelligible and took another sip. After a quiet moment Amy's face fell into something more serious. "If you don't mind me asking... why did you do that?" She sounded... concerned.
"I needed to know." Super's voice came out a lot softer than he'd meant it to. "Just in case..." He left the rest of that sentence unsaid.
"I see." Amy's voice was just as soft. "You know that none of us are going to let you get that bad right?" Super looked away and stayed quiet. "From what Tails has said you're doing really well. You-" She paused. "Hold on." She stood up. "I'll be right back." Super blinked as she watched her walk away. That had been... unexpected. For her to just get up and leave like that. What was she doing?
Super nearly dozed off waiting for her to return, though he didn't actually think it had been that long. Before he could fully register what was happening Tails was there, the fox pulling Super into a hug. Well, Super could hardly say no to that. Instead he just leaned into the touch. "Well, I think just taking some time to relax and recover is what you need." Amy put her hands together. "I've decided. I'm going to stay with you three until you're doing better Super."
"Yeah?" Super couldn't really move wrapped up as he was. He could however feel Sonic's mild sense of apprehension. Looks like the hedgehog had finally woken up.
"Yeah." Amy nodded. "I want to make sure both you and Sonic get better, so someone needs to be the responsible one here for a few days."
"Tails, don't think Sonic is the only one who knows about your far too frequent all nighters you try to pull." Amy gave him an unimpressed look. "It's a wonder any of you actually take care of yourselves at all."
Tails looked like he was about to argue for a moment before he shut his mouth. A wise decision. "I'm in no position to fight this." Super said, voice sounding tired.
"It's... probably a good idea for you to stick around for a couple days." Tails sighed before he got an amused look on his face. "I bet Sonic is thrilled."
Super snorted. "Coward hasn't said a word about this yet but I know he's up."
"Well that's not a no from him so I'm staying." Amy nodded in satisfaction. "For now though? Just get some rest Super. You look like you're barely awake right now." Super hummed in acknowledgement and allowed himself to drift off to sleep. Hopefully some grabbed the cup in his hands before it fell.

Sonic paced as Tekno combed over their systems again, Tails watching with interest, looking for any evidence of where the hacker was or what they'd done. It still didn't sit right with him that they just left Super and his little gang alone. They had to be involved.... right? Robotnik hadn't shown his face since everything with Chaos, and frankly the whole mess with that space station would have been the perfect time for him to come out of whatever hole he'd crawled into.
"You're gonna wear a hole in the floor." Amy crossed her arms as she gave Sonic an unimpressed look.
Sonic stopped and glared at her. "Not much else I can do right now."
Amy sighed and shook her head. "Alright you're way too narrow minded right now. Until we know who's behind this there's no problem you can just spin attack your way through." Sonic opened his mouth to say something back but Amy held up a hand. "Super and his... friends don't have anything to do with this. I trust that much."
"Good to know you trust him." Sonic huffed as he leaned against a wall. Tekno glanced over at the two of them briefly but said nothing. Tails' namesakes twitched but he didn't react otherwise.
"Sonic..." Amy sighed in frustration. "As someone who was on the receiving end of Super Sonic's rampages more than I'd like, I feel like I'm qualified to say he's changed. And before you say something about a long con, he's just like you. Doesn't really have the patience for that sort of thing."
"Oh and how well do you really know him?" Sonic looked away.
"I know he helped you save Mobius." Amy shot back.
"From a problem him and his people caused." Sonic looked back and pointed a finger at Amy.
"...I'll give you that." Amy ran a hand through her quills. "But they weren't deliberately stirring up trouble. At least not... explicitly. They could have left us to fix it on our own, but they helped. All of them." She watched him intently for a moment. "Just be honest. You don't know what's going on so you're looking for the easiest person to blame."
Sonic took a deep breath. "Fine." He groaned. "You're right. Happy?"
"Not really but hearing you admit it is a start." Amy grinned. "Not so hard to admit your feelings every once in a while is it?"
"Whatever." Sonic rolled his eyes. Even if he didn't really show it he was glad to have others around. Kept him... grounded. They all knew he valued them, he didn't need to say it all the time. "Yo anything yet?" He glanced over at where Tekno and Tails were.
"Nothing." Tekno sighed. "Whoever it was is good."
"You don't think it's Robotnik or Grimer do you?" Tails looked concerned.
"No. The doc and his assistant are still mia." Sonic waved a hand. "Plus we'd know if it was them."
"Sonic's right." Tekno nodded. "If it was them I'd be able to tell. I know their style well enough by now."
"So this isn't Robotnik and allegedly-" Sonic glanced over at Amy. "-isn't Super and his crew. Who does that leave us with?"
"No one." Tails wrung his hands. "A-at least no one we know that could get into our systems like this."
"I've got a bad feeling this is gonna become a bigger problem." Amy shook her head.
"Course it is." Sonic grumbled. "Can never be easy."
"You can say that again." Tekno pointed at one of the screens around them. There was some sort of message notification.
"Is that from..?" Tails started.
"The bat." Sonic groaned. "Which means those three are involved."
"Or-" Amy shot Sonic an exacerbated look. "-maybe they want to help."
"I'll just... look at the message..." Tekno walked over and opened up the message. Her eyes widened. "Ok, really don't think it's them now."
"Yeah? Why's that?" Sonic walked over to peer over her shoulder.
"They said the Ark was nearly hacked." Tekno's voice was soft, but still plenty loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
"You mean the same weapon that almost destroyed Mobius? That Ark?" Sonic's voice was cold. This was far more serious than he'd thought.
"That's the one." Tekno swallowed thickly.
"We should work with them." Tails suggested. He flinched mildly as Sonic turned his intense look on the fox. "Whoever tried to hack the Ark is probably the same person who got into our systems right?"
"That would be just our luck." Amy cut in. "I think Tails has a good point. It can't hurt to have some extra help."
"As long as we can trust that help." Sonic shook his head. "But..." He didn't meet any of his friends' eyes. "I guess we can.... work with them. Until this new mess is resolved. Just know I'll be keeping a close eye on them."
"Tekno?" Amy turned to the canary, not seeming to acknowledge Sonic's comment. He knew better though.
"I'll send a message back suggesting we work together until we figure this out." Tekno nodded.
"Don't worry, I'm sure we'll figure this out quick Sonic." Tails smiled.
"For all our sakes, I sure hope so." Sonic huffed.
