Being a Background Character Isn't So Bad
It's that time again. The city is in danger and a new evil has popped up swearing to take over the world. Destroys a building or two, flattens a few cars, nothing new. It didn't take too long before they showed up. Frills of all different colors, light surrounding them like angels, and fighting because their lives and the lives of everyone they love are on the line.
Various weapons slash and bang and tear into the creature, lots of power moves being called, and before the city knew it was all over. Took maybe an hour or so. After all that, the girls disappeared back into their normal lives, not one person knowing who they are.
I watch my daughter return home from school with a new scratch on her cheek. I wiped my hands on my apron and knelt down in front of her, first aid kit ready.
"You fought well today, Layla."
"You were watching?!" She acted surprised, giving me the biggest grin before wincing in pain. I started to dab ointment onto her small wound.
"I'm always watching. I need to make sure you're safe." I said, though I wasn't sure if I could protect her in those situations, but a mother will what a mother does.
One minute, and the scratch was covered with a band-aid and Layla given an apple to eat at the table. I returned to the kitchen preparing dinner.
"Mama, were you a magical girl?"
"I had wanted to once, but I don't think it's possible now."
"But you're a witch!" She pointed to the pointed hat on the rounded hat stand that sat on a small table by the front door.
"I practice magic," I chuckles, waving my soup ladle like a wand. "But it isn't quite the same. The magic I use isn't as...well, obvious. When you and your friends transform and use magic, everyone can see it. You save the world with it. I merely try to make our lives a little better with spells and a bit of luck." I wink and Layla giggles.
"What if you could be one?" Layla asked cautiously.
"If I could, then I wouldn't have time to make you or Papa's lunches, or tidy the house with the world being threatened every day." I said lightheartedly. "I'm content with making sure you have what you need and that you come home safe."
It isn't so bad being the mother of a magical girl. Being a part of her story is a joy in it of itself. Though I couldn't imagine the fate the wheels had for me...
